Smile!Deals

Ok, I'll make this simple. I've recently left the Air Force after 19yrs as a dentist. I've opened a brand new practice in Sinnamon Park Brisbane with the latest equipment.
Find out more about my practice on our website http://www.odontologica.com.au/promotions/

I'm offering three deals.
1. Deal 1. Comprehensive oral examination. This includes x-rays (bite wing and panoramic/OPG) if required. The fee for Deal 1 will be $100.
2. Deal 2. One Visit of regular cleaning (Scale and Clean). The fee for Deal 2 is $120.
3. Deal 3. Tooth bleaching. This is heavily discounted. You must be assessed as clinically suitable for this treatment by me and information about the nature, benefits and risks of treatment will be discussed. I will personally perform the bleaching myself using an Australian TGA approved, Australian made, dentist-only bleaching system. The fee for Deal 3 will be $350 + GST.

Notes, Terms and Conditions.
  • This is a time limited offer which expires on 31 Jan 2016. Bookings must be made to claim these offers on or before this date. I reserve the right to end the promotion early or extend it beyond this date at my discretion.
  • The prices shown are what will be charged on the invoice. There are no hidden or additional costs for these deals. The deal prices are not negotiable.
  • Payment is required at time of service. We have HICAPS and EFTPOS available (includes all EFTPOS, credit cards, Amex and JCB).
  • If you have Health Insurance, you may be able to claim some or all of this amount from your insurer.
  • It is unlikely that you would be able to claim anything for Tooth Whitening from a health insurer and you will be liable for the full invoiced amount yourself.
  • Tooth whitening will usually require GST applied to the amount. These are the rules as issued by the Tax Office.
  • For deal 2: The one visit of cleaning represents one 30 minute appointment for ADA service item 111 or 114. Should additional time be required, additional visits may be required (ADA service item 115, at additional cost).

Supplementary usual price information:
-Deal 1. Dental Examination: For an examination without x-rays ($120), add two bitewing xrays ($80), add one OPG ($110), and then there are many additional items which may be done at an exam for which a fee applies. As part of a promotion, these are included as extra value (without extra charge). For some people needing all of these services, that's a saving of as much as $210. If you ask me, that's a deal.
-Deal 2. Clean: Usual price $150. Saving $30.
-Deal 3. Bleaching: Varies according to clinical details. Usual price approx. $720 + GST. Estimated saving of $370 + GST.

So if you took all three, you could save at least $647 ($610 and $37 GST).

OzBargain bonus
For those of you who can attend the practice and choose to take Deal 1, we will offer you the option of purchasing a fantastic Colgate C350 electric toothbrush at the special price of $55 + GST (RRP $99.95 + GST) (Max. 1 brush per person)

Welcome to OzBargain, when posting a deal, you should mention what your regular price is so we know what makes this a deal.

    • Agree with this guy!

Maybe as an extra deal sweetener if people quote the word "ozbargain" they can get an extra $10 off :P

This doesnt benefit me whatsoever but just looking out for the fellow ozbargainers in brizzy!

Edit: just like to also add that this is fairly well presented for a first time poster!

  • can you get deal 2 without deal 1 ?

    • Perhaps. For me to consider this, you would need to have had an examination by a Dentist within the past 6 months and you ask that dentist to forward a copy of your records to our practice for me to review first.

For most people though, a 6 monthly recall frequency is best to preserve your oral health.

If your circumstances are outside of this, then as part of our duty of care to you, we would only provide the cleaning after a comprehensive oral examination to ensure that significant dental and oral disease is not overlooked.

      Regards

      Dr. Draper

      • So minimum cost would be $220.

        • +1

          Yes. If you want an exam and clean, that is Deal1 + Deal2 for $100 + $120 = $220.

  • +2

deal 2 seems expensive. I get my half yearly teeth clean and descale for $60.

  • Ok, apologies. New to this.

Deal 1. Dental Examination: For an examination without x-rays ($120), add two bitewing xrays ($80), add one OPG ($110), and then there are many additional items which may be done at an exam for which a fee applies. As part of a promotion, these are included. For some people needing all of these services, that's a saving of as much as $210. If you ask me, that's a deal.

Deal 2. Clean: Usual price $150. Saving $30.

Deal 3. Bleaching: Varies according to clinical details. Usual price approx. $720 + GST. Estimated saving of $370 + GST.

So if you took all three, you could save at least $647 ($610 and $37 GST)

    Regards

    Andrew

  • Where are the dentists in Melbourne east looking after us ozbargain folk?

  • +2

Eh… Face value dental in the city offers Deals 1 + 2 for cheaper. ($195 vs $220)
I went there a few months ago and they were top quality. And they don't put on a hard sell for more regular treatment if it isn't required like some places do.

  • Lucky I live in Sydney and nogapdental has saved me spending a cent on dental check-ups over the years.

  • Is this a bargain compared to most others?

I recently went to my regular dentist because of a piece broken off a tooth. The full examination was $65 while the scale and clean was $65 as well. The broken tooth was itemised separately.

So what do people normally pay for a standard examination followed by scale and clean? Jonaseymour quoted $195 (not on special).

      • Thanks. Useful info.

So if I'm reading it correctly the offered services are 011 and 111 (I can't check my account because I'm away at present). The national average charge for these 2 services was about $115 combined in 2014. The offered price of $220 hardly seems a bargain.

Perhaps odontologica could confirm these item numbers and comment.

        • He did say that deal #1 also includes ("if required") as well as any other diagnostics needed.
Two bitewing xrays: 022 Intraoral periapical or bitewing radiograph - per exposure $40.74 average NSW/ACT
one OPG, which doesn't seem to be listed. Maybe it comes under: '071 Diagnostic model – per model' $62.67 average NSW/ACT

For me, I've never needed any of these types of diagnostics except when they fitted orthodontics more than twenty years ago. Probably not a deal for someone with good teeth.

        • +1

          @twocsies:

No, 071 isn't it. That's a plaster model of your teeth.

Just so its clear, that site is just a sample from the full set of procedures. There's about 300 accepted item codes in the full set. Even I don't have access to that sort of price information.

        • Dabbler,

The classification of "this" or "that" ADA service is not straightforward and there is a degree of permissible variation between providers in what and how things are done. Comparisons are not straightforward like buying a commodity such as a litre of petrol.

          Exams? How much?
We have considered these figures and many others in our pricing schedules. We know our own costs. It would be foolhardy to pitch a service at a price destined to fail or at less than cost. We don't cut corners on anything we do in the clinic. If you'd rather I didn't employ well trained staff with experience or that we didn't use modern equipment, then perhaps we're not the practice you're looking for.

The real value you get from me when I provide your examination is my knowledge, skill, and experience. I don't practice "sausage factory" dentistry or sell you on costly plans which are better for my pocket but worse for your oral health. The real trick in dentistry is in the diagnosis and planning for complex cases and doing the least necessary to optimise oral health.

I haven't made a fuss over having the Kavo Diagnocam. That's used to scan for decay in teeth without x-rays. Nor have I mentioned the high quality cameras for documenting the state of your teeth and mouth. Nor the state of the art sterilisation equipment. Nor the 6x magnification that I use for all work and examinations. No, rather these are just included in our fee. No extras, no hidden fees. No surprises. All included value.

If we look at the example you provide, the more correct comparison is that which I will almost always see:
          - Needs checkup (one of 011) Qld $57.55
          - Needs 2x Bitewings (two of 022) 40.25x2=80.50

Often I see this also with patients
          - Sore/Sensitive/Discoloured tooth - Needs xray (one of 022) plus pulp testing (one of 061) (This is a different x-ray type to the bitewing) $40.25 + approx. $31
          - Unerupted or missing teeth. Needs OPG (one of 037) $110

So the 011+022x2 = 57.55+80.50 = 138.05. I'm selling at $120. That's 13% off. For the other things, well, you do the math. I'm trying to take the sticker shock out of making a positive change for better oral health.

Any way you look at this, I'm offering a great value deal when you consider what you really get for your money.

          Which tooth cleaning?
Professional dental cleans when done correctly are much more than just a "brushing plus". A plain fact is that the "111" procedure is less demanding than a "114" and should take only a fraction of the time and this is reflected in the pricing. A "114" takes a full appointment slot and in my practice, involves removal of calculus below the gumline, removal of calculus and stain above the gumline, removal of plaque from all surfaces of all the teeth. In my practice it also includes education and support to help the patient reduce their need for major work or preventable oral disease. Rarely would I bill a 111 - in my experience, either you need a 114 deep cleaning, or I'll defer it for your next recall.

My fees reflect the level of skill and time allocated to our patients for affordable, superior quality, personalised dental care.
I believe that the fees I'm offering are exceptional value when you look at what you really get for the price.
There are others in the market offering what might look similar, but it isn't the same. If it is on price alone that you make your choice, please do so. We think we offer better value for money and better quality service. We'll welcome you in when you do decide to come and see us.

Our difference is that we're not like the others, it's personal here.

Isn't comprehensive oral examination another name for "I am looking for problems so I can rip you off more" ??

    Eh, doc?

    • Oh rambokid, you do make me laugh.

The answer for me is no. There are unfortunately dentists out there like that. If I were one of them, I would have made the move to private practice a long time ago.

But no, the "comprehensive oral examination" is the "proper" examination. It's like the top to bottom condition report for your mouth. It involves a stack of detailed evaluations which include the systematic examination of the teeth, gums, examination of the soft tissues of the mouth, tongue, hard and soft palate, lips and facial skin, and jaw joint function to name just a few. The problems found can range from trivial through to life threatening. The trick lies in using science (not magic or gut feelings) to determine which items need attention, what that attention should be, and when it needs to be done. This is where experience and knowledge matter.

If price is the only dimension you consider, there are plenty that charge less. I think you also get less. Less experienced staff, less time with the dentist, less modern equipment, less care. These have an impact on your care.

I'm committed to practicing in an ethical manner; in employing evidence based practice in my clinical decisions; and in treating my patients with dignity and respect. We run a family operation. No faceless corporation, no generations of wealth passed down to me. People and relationships matter to us.

I think people should give us a try and then make up their minds. I think they will discover the real value we offer when it comes to their oral health.

    AHPRA guidelines:

Advertising may contravene the National Law when it:

    • encourages a person to improve their physical appearance together with the use of phrases such as ‘don’t delay’, ‘achieve the look you want’ and ‘looking better and feeling more confident’
    • provides a patient or client with an unsolicited appointment time
    • uses prizes, bonuses, bulk purchases, bulk discounts or other endorsements to encourage the unnecessary consumption of health services that are unrelated to clinical need or therapeutic benefit
    • uses promotional techniques that are likely to encourage consumers to use health services regardless of clinical need or therapeutic benefit, such as offers or discounts, online/internet deals, vouchers, and/or coupons, and/or
    • makes use of time-limited offers which influence a consumer to make decisions under the pressure of time and money rather than about their health care needs. An offer is considered time-limited if it is made to purchase for a limited or specific period of time, or available for use within a limited period of time or by a specific date, without an option to exit the arrangement.

Not to mention this is more advertising than a deal.

    • splathowa I absolutely refute that. Nothing offered here breaches the AHPRA regulations.

If you or the admins want, we can make this whole thread disappear (and the OzBargain deal with it) and I'll happily be on my way. I'd rather it was deleted than see inaccurate and harmful information be posted.

      • "Hurry!" Limited time offers etc.

        You're not alone.

        • From my cursory understanding, to basically comply with the regulations (as you see them), he should simply remove the end-date and replace it with some text at the end that says offer subject to change?

IF I was this dentist I would definitely talk to my lawyer to check the best way to promote the business. Point him here:

          http://www.ahpra.gov.au/Publications/AHPRA-FAQ-and-Fact-Shee…
"If you are not sure whether your advertising meets the requirements in the National Law, you should seek
          legal advice."

  • Seriously, you're not even trying with the deal anymore are you?

    http://www.shavershop.com.au/online-store/oral-care/electric…
Enjoy the same toothbrush for $49, as opposed to $55+GST.

  • Jeez, come to Cairns and get an appointment at the dental school. Cost me $150 for an exam, 2 x-rays, a clean and a gum-line varnish thingo, paid in full, no private insurance. Carried out by a 3rd-year students and overseen by a professor of dentistry. Only drawback is it takes 2 or 3 hours for the appointment.

    http://www.jcudental.com/

    • You have to pay to get work done at the dental school?
At UQ dental school in Brisbane it's all free. Bloody long wait time and appointments though. Not worth it for me.

  • On this point, you're just plain wrong. You need to read the rules and the official guide to the rules. You were only half way there. The law in itself is purely abstract, with no practical value until it has been tested and cases have been heard to show how the law actually operates. That's where the guidelines document is derived from. Each Health Professional Board may have produced their own guidelines document to supplement the law.

    For dentists:
    http://www.dentalboard.gov.au/Codes-Guidelines/Policies-Code…

Nothing in my post contravenes anything here.

I'm done talking about that now on this thread.

    Smile.

  • So words that promote patients to hurry in to take advantage of an offer before it expires doesn't contravene the spirit of at least 3 of those dot points copied and pasted from the National Dental Board guidelines BEFORE you linked it to the page?

You're promoting an in-chair whitening deal with a take home top-up on a limited time basis. That at least contravenes the spirit of the first bullet point.

"Advertising may contravene the National Law when it:

    • encourages a person to improve their physical appearance together with the use of phrases such as ‘don’t delay’, ‘achieve the look you want’ and ‘looking better and feeling more confident’"

"Having a smile you’re proud of can make a world of difference to your confidence. What ever your motivation, we’re here to help.

Spring Smile Specials – Hurry! ends 30 Nov 2015

Do you have a special event coming up this spring? Formal? Day at the races? Job interview? New relationship? We would love to do our best to give your smile a little boost this spring.

These specials may be booked where appointments are available until 30 Nov 2015.

Wondering if your teeth could be whiter?

The answer is almost certainly yes! We do though insist that you have a comprehensive check-up with Dr. Draper to be assessed for suitability for external tooth whitening as not all treatments are suitable for all people. Many people require a standard clean prior to bleaching. Once treated, many people will achieve teeth three shades whiter in roughly one hour. Results do vary and Dr. Draper will discuss the process with you in more detail at the consultation.

If you are suitable for treatment, we are able to offer a special price of $350 for an in-surgery bleach performed by Dr. Draper and a follow-up appointment (ADA item codes 118). The system we use delivers some of the best results possible in a single visit. This is heavily discounted on the regular price.

As an extra special spring bonus, we will provide you with a take home bleach kit to help maintain the results. What a deal!"

Are you telling me that is 100% AHPRA compliant?

    • The word you can look at closely is "may". These dot points are to help make decisions about advertising, and if your advertising has some element of a time-limited offer, it may contravene the National Law. But it may not. Just depends, really.

In general I do see specific advise for practitioners in other areas of health to avoid time-limited offers altogether, but in this situation, I would imagine that the dentist has consulted his lawyer, and his legal advisor says it's fine.

The AHPRA is not responsible for compliance, it is merely clarifying national law for its practitioners. So are you accusing him of illegal advertising?

  • Some people just have way too much time on their hand. The person posted a deal. Take it or leave it.
