Ebates is a US based cashback site (pays out with Paypal). It has a recurring offer for $10 USD credit after spending $25 USD within 90 days.

You get this simply by visiting the page as a new user (offer will pop up).

Major sites are available like eBay US (cashback is generally ~1%), Amazon US (can get up to 10%) & Eastbay/Footlocker US.

Do check the specifics of each merchant however, as they may have category limitations.

PS: If signing up, please consider putting [email protected] in the "did someone refer you?" field.

With current exchange rates and poor $ value, buying anything in USD is a joke. Buying anything from the US is a joke. By the time you convert to AUD and factor in shipping.

Recommend cashrewards all the way. It's a Australian company so by using it we are supporting Australian business. Not to mention there is no minimum spend and no time limit. It just accumulates and accumulates. No exchange rate fees to convert it back into AUD as it is already in AUD.

But if you were buying something from the US anyway, why wouldn't you? If you don't use a cashback site you are throwing money away.

Cashrewards gives you a joining bonus of $0 & you can't use it on most of these sites anyway (other than eBay AU) - so I don't think this is exactly a good comparison.

RE: conversion - for payouts select native currency as USD in paypal and use it next time you buy something in USD - so no conversion fee. It might even appreciate in value..

RE: Australian company - as much as I appreciate the sentiment, this doesn't factor into my buying decisions very much.

    or Amazon US

They dont offer cashback on everything

    Only for

    • Baby Halloween Costumes 3.0%
    • Adult Halloween Costumes 3.0%
    • Holiday Toy List 3.0%
    • Beauty & Grooming 3.0%
    • Clothing 3.0%
    • Home Services 3.0%
    • Ah true whoops - will correct. Ebay US still worth it.

With ebay USA, most reputable seller either dont ship to Australia or charge a premium for shipping

Not forgetting most electronics are no compatible here (only 110v) and you are sacrificing warranty. Most Mobile phones have bands not compatible in Australia too.

        • I've bought plenty of items from the US I couldn't get here for any price.

What you say is true regarding (mains powered) electronics yes - but you can often buy the exact same items on eBay AU you know (from sellers who offer international shipping - who are the only ones you would be regarding anyway).

Sometimes shipping is expensive, sometimes it is cheap (depends on seller) - it is the total price that matters.

You could buy items located in Australia from eBay US, but they would be priced in USD and you'd have to factor in currency conversion (& therefore if it was worth it).

Process for me is: if I find an item I want on eBay AU that is priced in USD - look it up on eBay US and see if it makes sense to buy it with Ebates cashback.

          @gringo:

I'm pretty sure the sale has to originate from a us seller for Cashback to be verified and paid out to you. It's exactly like the eBay USA promo codes that don't work on Australian sellers unless they list their items via the eBay USA site

        • @easternculture:

You say this based on what?

This isn't a promo code, it's a cash back site.

          http://www.ebates.com/ebay.htm?navigation_id=22536

hrmm some category limitations there also (video games is ok tho). Will update the main post.

          @gringo:

Try and let us know. happy to be proven wrong

Last time i tried a ebay US cashback site the way you described, it never tracked

        • @easternculture:

Interesting. OK nothing to buy right now but will do at some point.

@easternculture: I've used Ebates for UK/Euro sellers just fine, so Australian sellers should work.

  • For those in the know a dumbarse question: on a visa, and not 28ยบ, approx how much % wise would you lose on the cash back? They're listing Agoda at 3% Venere at 5% so could be suitable for a one night budget booking. Knowing i would not lose with the $10 credit though. ANZ slug 3% transaction fee would this apply to the cash back?

    • Like all cashback sites you pay the full amount up front, and get the cashback later. Any % fees from your credit card will therefore apply to the full balance and you will have to factor this in.

You receive the cashback as Ebates credit that you can withdraw to a Paypal account - if you keep it in USD in paypal you won't lose anything. Otherwise Paypal will convert it to AUD at a very poor rate.

      • Thanks El Gringo
