i think the rewards scheme is optional if you have xbox gold and you get rewards points when you buy games etc from xbox store.
you both get 25k rewards points.

I know because I did the monthly reward surveys and you get points every time you renew an Xbox gold sub (if you have activated your Xbox rewards account)
From my research they are based on $USD and 1000 rewards points = $1. So, 25,000 rewards points should be equivalent to about $34AU give or take a bit due to fluctuating conversion rates.
It's a rewards scheme where you get points for buying games from Microsoft, as well as a few other things such as surveys etc. sometimes there's promotions where buying certain games will bet you more points than normal.
The points translate to $5 per 5000 points, so this promotion nets you $25 to spend in digital content.
