Sunday, 18 October
Stirling Gardens, Barrack St, Perth
The Supreme Court of Western Australia will open its doors to the public for an OPEN DAY on Sunday, 18 October, between 11am and 3pm. Members of the public are invited to explore the grand 112-year-old courthouse, view heritage-listed courtrooms and the Chief Justice’s chambers, and inspect the cells below the building. Supreme Court judges will give talks throughout the day, with people invited to ask questions. On display will be information on WA’s first Chief Justice, Sir Archibald Paull Burt, appointed in 1861.
You will take a self-guided tour of not only the public zones but also areas of the courthouse not usually open to the community, including walking down the long stairs from the dock in Court 2 to the detention cells beneath the
courtroom.
The Open Day is part of a weekend focusing on Perth’s history and heritage, organised by Heritage Perth for Perth Heritage Days 2015. Radio 6PR’s Bob Maumill will broadcast live from the courthouse. Government House & the Old Court House Law Museum next door will also open, along with many other heritage buildings around Perth.
