  • Do you guys think its worth getting, or better to wait for a decent priced 65" UHD?

    • me too waiting for UHD, this is not smart but good price for size.

      • +4

Depends on the content you watch. If you have NBN and have the bandwidth to stream 4K then by all means go for UHD.

For anyone else (Free to air, non 4K movies), UHD is wasted.

        • Also depends on how long you hope to keep the TV, assuming it doesn't die. If you don't upgrade your TV often, then perhaps it's worth investing in the tech so you have it should your viewing habits change.

        • +1

@Smigit: Unfortunately the NBN roll out is beyond my control. Many areas, including ours is not even in NBN Co's 3 year plan so I would anticipate 5+ years before realistically expecting NBN… I should mention that I'm not remotely rural - metro Brisbane <8km from the CBD.

In the meantime in 5 years SE Asia will be streaming 8K…

        • @plasmapuff: Yeah very true. For many it could be a while until they could stream content at that res. Certainly I couldn't right now but I'm fortunate enough to be in an area where the physical cabling began two weeks back, so some time next year it'll be an option.

If I wasn't on a 3 year plan then it'd become a bit of a roll of the dice as to whether it'd pay off or not (assuming you don't want to invest in physical UHD media).

        • +1

UHD Bluray is coming this year, it won't be long before it's the norm.

        • +1

          @Sage:

UHD Bluray is coming this year, it won't be long before it's the norm.

Thats what they said about 3D, quadraphonic sound, and SACD. Bluray is like LPs, I'm not quite ready to throw out the collection, but won't be buying any more.

        • +2

@Smigit: By the time the 4K content is easily accessible here, a brand new 70" UHD display will likely cost less than the difference between 1080p and UHD is today.

    • +12

How close will you be sitting to the screen

      http://www.rtings.com/images/resolution-4k-ultra-hd-chart.pn…

      • Good guide, but this is also assuming that you're getting 4K content.. not Free To Air or HD Netflix (Ultra HD Netflix is available in Aus for $14.99)

      • seriously? Every time i see my kids sits closer than 3 metres from the TV, I tell them to move back. Is the times that watching too much TV too "closely" kills your eyes (short sightedness).

Or is this been proven not the case?
So it is still the case, then that means I will NEVER need a UHD tv.

  • the early adopter in me really wants to get a 4k one but this is a damn fine deal… thanks!

    • +2

I'll be against 4K for a quite a while for a few reasons:
      - Compression on downloaded titles is quite poor, and if it's not the file size is huge
      - If you have a HTPC on a 4K TV you're going to drive it that much harder.
      - Upscaled 1080P often doesn't look amazing
      - There is little content in 4K
      - 1080P is in it's prime and very cheap
      - Good 4K is expensive

      • that last point probably the only real factor for me… got a tonne of disk and bandwidth on-tap, some quite decent hardware at home to use as a HTPC if needed too (if my current box doesnt drive it)

my desire probably comes more from the TV it's replacing… it's about 8 years old & 1080p, if the new one lasts that long then it'll be a long, long time before i get a 4k telly!

  • +1

decent picture quality but ghosting is noticeable. speaker is crap.
    happy for that price

    • +3

      don't bother with 4k

      Fixed it for you

    • -3

Don't know why I was downvoted on this. This size on 1080p will be bad. Go for 4k

      • Not sure why youre getting downvoted. Can anyone who owns a 65” tv comment if 1080p is bad? Eg 1080p on 27” computer monitor is terrible imo, is it the same at this scale?

        • My 65vt60 is only 1080p….sniff…

Yeah naah you would needed Golden eyes and be sitting a meter away from the screen to need 4k if you are pumping good stuff into it to begin with.

        • I have a two year old Sharp 70" and unless you get too close, everything looks good (often great!)

  • +1

Is JVC a decent brand these days?

    • +2

Use to be, but not these days.

PS, I haven't seen this particular screen in person.

    • Yeah I haven't heard the JVC branding for a while now. Thought they went out of business.

      • Just cheap chinese gear these days.

        • +4

They sold the name for some things, but not others.

All JVC TVs are generic Chinese rebadges.

Their projectors are JVC proper - and priced to match.

  • At this price I'm tempted to buy it and stick it in the kitchen

    • +4

You must have a huge kitchen to be able to impulse buy a 65" TV for it. Unless you plan on replacing a wall with the tv.

      • +24

It would make an awesome splashback.

        • Might get one and put it at the end of my bath.

        • +5

          @luke73:

use it as the end-glass wall for an infinity pool… get a snorkel set and watch jaws on it.

        • @jaybo:

Sounds cool! If he does that, I'll be coming over to his place for a, bath.

          Not creepy at all

        • +1

          @luke73:

I might get this for my second toilet.

    • -1

Use it in the kitchen as a chopping board?

  • +27

thanks op got two for the caravan

    • +18

      Sounds like a fair trade.

  • any special on gift card?
    or was it supercheapauto? :S

  • +1

Will will likely see 65inch FHD for this price in a better brand over the next few months?

I'm not in a hurry to purchase. But if this is as good as it gets Ill go for it. I see Aldi had a 65inch 4k for the same price but no Aldi in Perth.

    • Likely not till post Xmas sales I'd guess, but don't hold me to that :P

  • Picture quality and input lag is the big question. There's not much point in buying a big cheap TV if it looks like rubbish.
Anyone seen this unit in action?

    • +6

JVC bro, they used to give these out for free on funny home videos

    • +4

Most dicksmith stores should have this model on display if you want to see it in person.

Imo, image quality is decent (better than most JVC panels we have in stock). However it doesnt produce deep black and viewing angles (before noticing color variations) seem very narrow.

  • None in Perth it seems

    • $7.95 delivery? Though that doesn't help you audition it

  • +5

I am also looking for a good 65'' tv (without having to sell a kidney or something), saw this one yesterday at my local shopping centre and picture quality is not the best, it was on display next to smaller sized JVC tvs, the 65'' image looked just like an enlarged version, with very visible level of pixelation…we just walked away

    • +2

I haven't seen it in person so can't judge it, but the problem with TVs on display in stores is sometimes they're fed 1 pure feed, sometimes that feed is split between TVs, and sometimes the source content isn't ideal. That's before you deal with what settings they've used.
      Something to think about :)

      • Fair point but I would have thought that if they are trying to sell something they would try to make it look as best as possible…

        • +3

They probably would prefer you to buy the $3k Sony panel so would do their best to make that stand out amongst the other panels. Even if it means making other panels look less good…

          Upsell you the "difference" .

Source: Working in retail has made me cynical

        • +1

@plasmapuff: I've heard it first hand that's exactly what they do. RCA source for the cheap TV's with standard settings and HDMI source with the better looking pre-set settings for the expensive ones.

        • See it all the time in JB Hifi's etc. Some TVs on the wall, having multiple screens to 1 feed. Then on the shop floor, single screens off single feed

        • I didn't know that although it makes a lot of sense, nice selling trick…after all probably "cheap" tvs would sell anyway

    • Some monster cables would have fixed it up.

  • +1

Best to get a projector at this price point, if you can find space to install it. BENQ and EPSON refurbs are great!

  • +1

Hmmm, very tempting. The small number of HDMI and USB ports is a bit annoying, but I assume there is a thing that splits the things into things. Might pop over to the Dick Smith down the road from work and see if they have one on display.

    • but I assume there is a thing that splits the things into things

      ಠ_ಠ

    • Yes you can get hdmi switches and USB hubs.

    • Have you considered an AV receiver? Most these days have at least 5 HDMI inputs, and considering the sound on this TV is supposedly sub-par, it may be worth considering one.

  • +1

65 inch full hd is quite low resolution. After 55 inch is when it really starts to be less about cost and more about how 4k is needed for larger screens.

Interestingly this difference isn't as obvious from a projector. It's certainly interesting.

    • Don't know about your comment regarding projectors. You can see all the pixels just as you would on a normal tv and its just as obvious as on a tv. Maybe the projectors you've looked at are slightly out of focussed so the pixels appears a blended? Hence I wish I had the money for a 4k projector.

    • +4

I've got a 65inch Panasonic Plasma, about 5 years old now.

Picture quality is still very good compared to mid range 65inch LEDs today and in some ways better (I still prefer Plasma to LCD/LED especially when watching FTA).

Anyway 1080P is still fine for a 65inch TV, if you're not using it as a monitor or sitting 2m away.

I don't see the point of 4k TV today.. what 4k content is available today?

      • I just sold my 5 year old 54" Panasonic Plasma and got a Samsung 55" UHD 4K in the last DS 30% off sale, change over was only $847 so was worth it.
There is some shows on Netflix in 4K, but i mainly wanted it for watching my 4K video i take on my iPhone 6S plus.
This sitting distance is all BS too, i sit 3m and can tell the difference.

        • +4

          Never sell a Panasonic Plasma.

        • +4

4k video from an iPhone with a tiny sensor at 30 frames per second!?

Honestly, the only reason why you'll shoot 4k video on a phone is to tell people that you have 4k content to watch! 30fps is going to be jittery as!

          Shooting 4k with a DSLR I can understand….

        • @luke73: Was Glad to get rid of the big power guzzling heater.

        • -1

@JB1: No jitter here works great, also with a go pro too. Sounds like you are jealous.

        • @Robster33:

If you said you owned a Porsche 911 or Rolex Daytona Platinum, yes I'd be jealous. But a 55inch UHD TV and iPhone 6S? Lol I'll stick with my 65 inch Plasma.

Anyone who would accuses me of being jealous of a TV is a pretty shallow person IMO.

        • @JB1: you were the shallow one with your original comment, must be buyers remorse then.

  • +3

Could have been had for $1062.32 Thursday last week, was reduced for an online daily deal, plus code for further $100 off … apologies for not posting.

  • +1

Seen it in store over the weekend. Picture quality didnt look the best.

  • +4

I got this tv for the $1,062.32 price last Thursday.

Free to air TV is satisfactory and dont expect to be blown away by the quality. Alot of backlight bleeding.

Blu Rays looks much much better than free to air TV And I am very happy with this.

Overall I am happy with the TV given the price and the fact that we are replacing a failing 50" led.

    • This is consistent with my comment on Trent86's previous deal :)

The JVC 65" TV was discounted a little today ($1,162) and the MEGA100 code is also taking another $100 off
Could be good buy at $1,062.32 today (in cart C&C price after code).

  • You're going to need to sit far back to not see the pixels at full hd on a 65''

  • I checked out two TVs at separate DSE stores, in both instances the JVC was on display between a DSE 64.5" and a LG 65". It looked ok to me, the colours on the JVC seemed more … "dynamic" than the other two TVs. However I did notice on a blank section when the looped video restarted, the black was significantly brighter on the JVC than the other two TVs which were were so BLACK it appeared to be off for the two seconds. Also, the specifications on the DSE site seem to be incorrect, the JVC has three HDMIs.. and from what I gathered one USB for playback only (no record to usb function), the site states two HDMIs.

I might get one if discount code comes up which brings it closer to $1,000. The reason I want one is to replace a dying 47". It would be mostly used as a HTPC running Netflix, Kodi , basic PC functions and browsing so a Smart TV or high Spec UHD will be overkill for my purposes.

  • just a reminder that these DSE JVC TVs are just a generic Chinese TV with the JVC brand name put on it.
Apart from the name I don't know if anything else about these TVs is JVC.
    Might as well buy Kogan.

I've had no trouble with my 55" though the OS crashes sometimes and is pretty slow to respond.

Not a TV to be seen on the JVC web site.
    http://www.jvc.net/au/

  • Great Japanese brand TV, Japanese TVs make pretty good televisions, i remember that JVC was selling camcorders in the 80"s and used on a some of the TV shows as prizes, least JVC is better than most rubbish brands like Soniq or Kogan.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/JVC

    • I brought a Dickie JVC, quickly sold it.

  • We'll see how my phone call with Samsung goes tomorrow morning about my now dead 2.5 year old 64" plasma!
Might own a JVC by the end of the day!

    • +1

      Won't be this price tomorrow… :P

      Well, not likely…

      Maybe

Depends what sale Dick is having tomorrow!

    • +1

Samsung should repair it under statutory warranty. You should expect at least 3 years life out of an expensive TV.

To be honest, I'm over Samsung products, just not reliable IMO.

      • Yeah, I was thinking you'd have to expect 3 years out of a "reputable" brand name too.
I've got 2 other Samsung's (LEDs) that are at least 6-8 years old and still going strong.

Only problem now is finding the receipt… again!

  • +1

If anyone is looking to purchase this, be sure to be a professional and use the 'bday75' voucher for a further $75 off. For some reason, none of the other vouchers including the 'bday100' one which should work, do work.

But don't anybody go tipping the likes of Dick or Gerry…

  • Today you can use the code MON85 to get $85 off this TV.
