Nexus 5X and 6P Pricing

The Nexus 5X and 6P were just announced this morning, specs are pretty much the same as the leaks and rumours. Pricing seems high though the 5X starts at $659 and 6P at $899

Nexus 6P seems like a great phone.

    3450mAh Battery
    Dual front-facing stereo speakers.
    Amoled Display
    Usb Type-C

    Hopefully the camera is good.

$900 though 0.0 not that bad of a price compared to it's competition, but still too much for me to spend on a phone.

    • I agree , I see no point in divesting more than $500 when the phones around that price are more than enough for general public and nerds alike …

      a few examples :

LG G4 - recent ebay SALE
Nexus 6 - for phablet fans and I use this as daily driver
The entire Xiaomi lot - the build quality (sturdy plastic though ) and software are not everyone's cup of tea

Lumia phones - anyone who is alright with the microsoft OS - I'm not :)

      • +2

Galaxy S6 was also on sale for around $550.

        Camera seems pretty good http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/09/29/nexus-camera-gets-hu…

        • +1

The Camera promo shots look great ( they did the same for my Nexus 6 which is below par though :) )

I hate to say this , but I prefer the Iphone 6s camera to the Nexus 6P in the screencap below .. It may be inaccurate but the 23 mins photo looks so gorgeous compared to the 6P photo

          https://ausdroid.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/screencap-30…

        • @kamban:

Why is the iPhone shot the only one of the six where they are not in exactly the same spot facing the same direction? Unless they removed that huge tree between shots…

        • +1

@dazweeja: It maybe due to the cropping out of the full image , when cropping out of different sized photos ,this is bound to happen

p.s unsure why my comment above has been negged … hmmm apple haters maybe ( even though I'm one of them ;) )

        • +1

          @kamban:

It wasn't me but people are pretty neg-happy on this site ;)

My point was that it's in the same area but it's a different location. There's a dam in the iPhone one, the fence is much smaller in relation to her face so is either significantly further away or a different part of the fence entirely. I guess what I'm saying is that there is one photo that looks different to the rest and it was obviously shot in a different location. Why? It could have a very dramatic effect on lighting conditions. Even changing direction could. Also, being a different location to the other two, why would we believe that it was shot at the same time? It looks like they shot this one first and then set up somewhere else.

        • @dazweeja: Yeah mate , i was sure it wasn't you and was not keen on knowing who … I always wonder why people are trigger happy to neg any comment that is even remotely mentions something against their belief or fanboism cult :)

I agree with your assessment of the photo , but what is puzzzling is that photo was released by google to compare the photo quality of the different phones and the iPhone looks better to my eyes

Who in their right mind would do that in a product launch - making your competitor look good =S

    • Impressed with the weight — I love light phones
Not sure about the camera quality though

  • +8

    were getting ripped off again
    http://www.techradar.com/au/news/phone-and-communications/mo…

US it's $379 USD starting for the 5X
    which is about $550 AUD

    • +1

I was going to say don't forget to add GST, but even after counting in GST, we are paying around $50 AUD more.
I've even checked Korean pricing (because it was available on the forum I go to), it came out to be around $600 AUD.

      • They don't pay GST anymore though.

        • Really? How?
Americans I know don't include VAT (which is similar to GST) in their price because they have different tax law in each states, so you add the tax up on the checkout after you enter what state you live in (or something like that).
If a company sells something in Australia, unless it is considered as a private import, don't the company need to provide warranty and GST?

        • @Oversimplified: From what I hear, they initially paid GST on the Nexus 5s, but they stopped paying it halfway through. They can do that because they ship from overseas. Not sure what's the case here, since the Nexus 6p 128gb is 1099, hence we would have to pay duty if no GST is paid.

    • So… $550 AUD plus GST which is $55 So that makes it $605
Then you need to take into account fluctuation in the dollar for the time the device is on sale.. so thats $50
Oh look.. price its being sold for…

Granted i still think $380 USD is too much for a phone which probably cost $150 to make

  • +7

The G4 costs $200 less and is pretty much the same phone, probably better in some aspects. Marshmallow and updates isn't worth that much.

    • It is much better in my opinion 9 except for battery life - maybe due to screen resolution )

      Much better camera with OIS
Bigger screen - a plus for me
Better feel in hand for the leather models
Can be easily rooted for Marshmallow - though not sure of the camera drivers

ON TOP of all this - > 3 GB RAM :)

      • Is there anyway you can change the default resolution of G4 to be 1080p?
It sounds like PC where you can change the resolution easily, haha

        • If your phone is rooted, you can use an app to do it.
If your phone isn't rooted, I heard that you can use adb to do it, but I've never done that so I don't know how it goes.

Though, it's downscaling, performance might increase, but the screen becomes blurry and stuff.

        • The new Z5 premium does this by default, but for G4 you need to flash a compatible kernel and at this point I don't believe there are many

        • @kamban: Nah, that's dynamic resolution change which is slightly different. You can set the resolution using adb command easily. Though it can backfire really easily due to the default apps usually not being a multi-DPI app, causing them to crash (I've done it before).

        • @Oversimplified: I've never used ADB to change resolution , new thing to learn :)

        • @kamban: One of the dumbest thing I've ever done, follow an instruction on how to do this (it was based on Note 4), end up making the resolution to the ratio that the phones are in. :P Had to use Odin. It was fun. :P

Using an app to reduce resolution is so much easier (though it requires root access).

        • @Oversimplified: haha the good old ODIN

I've moved away from Samsung handsets and sitting comfortably with Nexus ones

I'm checking colour calibration for Nexus 6 and have not been satisifed so far with the kernels and options availabel :(

        • @kamban:

          https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.franco.ker…

Have your tried this? There's a free version but not sure if it includes color calibration.

        • @ozhunter: I'm using Hells kernel that allows colour calibration but the end result is not to my satisfaction , will give the Franco kernel a shot :) thanks mate

    • Agreed. G4 > 5X

    • I waited until the last day to pull the trigger on a g4. I knew the specs of the Nexus 5x but I still hoped… on the last day of the click15 I bought a g4.

  • +2

That's too expensive, given the AUD/USD situation. You are paying 200 - 400 dollars more than Android 6.0 over a G4 or a Huawei Mate S.

  • +2

Yeah a bit too expensive for me. Looks like I am going to hold onto my old Nexus 4 for a bit longer :)

    • Wait 2 more years until the price drop, bargain!

    • It's the perfect time to buy a nexus 6 though. At roughly $510aud from amazon its a damn good value phone.

  • +2

looks like i'll hold onto my nexus 5 for longer.

  • +1

wanted to go for this but like the post below, I'm gonna hold onto my Nexus 5 for a bit longer as well :)

    • are you reading upside down? :P

      • haha good one @Gimli, I meant above ;)

  • I'm surprised nobody is calling it out for what it is - price gouging. $499 USD <~> $720 AUD. Slap some GST onto that and it comes out to be $792. Still an unexplained $100 price difference.

  • +3

I'm pretty sure these won't sell well, just like the nexus 6…
    Way too expensive.

  • I m holding on my xperia Z2 with 3 GB RAM.

  • +1

Was going to replace my cracked Nexus 5 with the N5X, but not with those prices. And only 2GB of RAM? No notification LED? Ugh.
I think I'll just wait a year to pick up the 6P.

    • +1

But what about the 6, uh, Q?!

  • I have Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablet, my personal opinion is that pure Android is over-rated, I did not notice any difference in performance after the latest updates so far on the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 itself as well as any performance differences with my Samsung Tab S. LG is my preferred brand for now after Samsung new approach to imitate Apple in every way.

    • I agree, the only advantage is that you get updates straight away.

  • +2

Who do these people think they are charging 1K for a mobile phone? hope they go broke and come back crawling to us consumers to buy their product at a cheaper price..

  • +8

Price is crazy. I paid $450 for my Nexus 5 and $360 for my Oneplus One. No way am I spending that much on a phone.

    • +8

Indeed crazy. However when Nexus 5 was released, it was USD$349 for 16GB and USD$399 for 32GB. So the new Nexus 5X is merely $30 more. Except in Oct 2013 AUDUSD is around 0.94, rather than 0.70 today.

      • +1

add some price gouging as well as GST for the Australian price on top of that as well.

  • +1

Didn't think GST plays part of it unless they now ship from Australia.
Also US customers get U$50 Google play plus 3 month Music.
If we miss out on that as well the Australia tax is truly bad.
Might look for grey import to get a decent price.
Just need to check band support.

    Cheers

    • Comparing US price to AU price is not totally rational … as we all know the size of the market, income level, tax system, are so different…

  • Price is decent for what they offer (at least not mad like iPhone prices) but expensive for me. :/

-.- happy with s6 edge atm (but hate the battery).

  • Gonna either wait for an eBay sale on Chinese stock,or get a 820 if its out by before then

  • I think that pricing alone is enough to get me on the OnePlus One ($378 AUD off DWI eBay) for comparable-ish specs

    • Easily one of the best value for money phones available.

    • +1

Quality control is crap on OPO..

      The touchscreen multitouch is crap

      • Oh well, it's ordered now haha

        • +1

          you can cancel..

          i have an OPO…

some apps/game wont work properly cos of this issue

        • +1

I have no problems whatsoever with mine :) bought another a few ago for another family member.

        • @tyler.durden: I think I'll just wait and see, models produced post-April 2015 have had the touch issues fixed in production.

        • @Chipotle:

do u have a source link for this?

With the OPO, the company denied/ignored there was a problem…
          The communication is quite pathetic…

Then eventually they said that can be fix with a firmware update…
I don't know if this is true, since I stop using their official firmware
and using cynagenmod one since lollipop was released much faster than waiting for them to update it.

But from my own research, it due to hardware fault, because the screen was not grounded properly.
When that person open it up and grounded it properly
          the multitouch worked perfectly.

Anyway from this experience, I would not buy from them again.
Also the price point that made the first OPO a value for money hitech low cost phone is now gone.
When I bought mine it was around $360 to $380 due to the ebay discount.

Now the phone cost around $500+ mark..

Not only that, but they took things out like NFC etc..

      • Yep ^, I remember I had to exchange my Nexus 7 5 times to get a good one.

  • I personally think the Xiaomi Mi4c makes the 5X irrelevant, especially when Cyanogenmod becomes available for it. More RAM, bigger battery, MUCH cheaper.

    • Where to reliably buy it, and do all the bands work in Australia?

      • Oppomart and I doubt it, I'll check

  • I'm someone who has had a nexus 4 since 2013 and am ready for an upgrade to a 6P.

I'm happy to wait until mid/late November - hopefully grey import will come to my rescue, the base 32gb version will be $800ish.

My question to you all is, with no warranty is it worth saving 15%?

Also if I'm set on a 6P, should I roll the dice and get a Huawei Honor MediaPadX2 for under $500? Specs: http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Huawei-MediaPad-X2_id9277

    • +1

You know that mediapad has a 7inch screen? The LG G4 is a more comparable phone and was recently on sale for $460.

My question to you all is, with no warranty is it worth saving 15%?

As someone who hasn't had never had to return their phone, I'd say it's worth the saving.

      • Yeah I'm aware its going from a 5.7" to a 7 with the Huawei, but coming from a nexus 4, I also am hesitant to venture away from stock android!

So you think I should get the g4?? That was on my shortlist, but the screen real estate is a factor…I'm so confused/hesitant!

        • So you think I should get the g4?? That was on my shortlist, but the screen real estate is a factor

I think you should get the S6 or G4, but since you still have the Nexus 4, any current flagship would be a big upgrade for you?

        • @ozhunter: a big upgrade yes, but at the same time the nexus 4 was the first smart phone I've ever owned (I've used/owned iPad/nexus 7/lenovo tab 7s) and apart from screen size and battery life, I'm still a massive fan.

Your also suggesting the S6? Damn…decisions decisions.

        • @rawm:

I think the S6 is best android phone out around the $550 price point.

Best display and camera on any android smartphone(Note 5 is the same). Internal storage is the fastest too. It's exynos soc is one of the best out there.

Cons of it are average battery life and glass build which makes it fragile and super slippery.

    • Where are you getting this 15% off from? To get to that you need to pay $765 shipped.

Realistically clove/Handtec will probably get to $830 landed, but that's only like 8.5%.

      • 15% was just a stab. Is that saying its then worth the 2year warranty to purchase from Google?

  • +1

This phone is too expensive. I can get an older model of a different manufacturer for much less if I wait for a special. I have also decided to stick with m 2 year old phone because I don't need a faster phone. Making my entire reply redundant.

    • You can get an older model of the Nexus for cheaper too….

  • +1

Nexus phones (esp the nex 4 and 5) previously had the advantage that you didn't really have to consider any other phones if you were thinking of buying something in that price range as it was the best value phone.

The current price changes things especially now that there is way more competition on the market.

Perhaps the nexus is being pitched at a different market.

    • IMO its as simple as all locking you into an ecosystem. Use Apple (music, icloud, itunes, ios apps etc) etc locked into iPhone, use Google products (YouTube, chrome, Google cloud images, gmail, Google docs etc) and you're locked into the android and perhaps stock android (a little less exclusively) ecosystems.

Google's nexus range is all about this, and is priced accordingly. Similar to iPhone range with a slightly lower price.

  • Has anyone found pictures comparing the old Nexus 5 to the new one? I want to see how much bigger it is relative to the Nexus 5. This would also be useful if any one has done the same for the Nexus 5 vs Nexus 6P.

Also does anyone know when they'll actually be available for order?

  • LG Nexus 5X vs LG G4

    • G4 is a bit better, but to have stock android and updates does make the 5X tempting.

  • I paid $160 for Lenovo K3 Note. Don't really see how Nexus 5X is worth 4 times more.

  • +1

    https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/3mzrl9/hi_im_hiroshi_…
Reddit AMA with the google design team, if anyone is interested.

    • No doubt the iphone has an awesome SoC. Performance is one thing, the OS is another. Anyone buying a nexus phone does not want iOS. I'd be happy with an iphone if it ran android.

If you get negged, it would be for your irrelevant comment.

      • i wouldn't say all nexus buyers don't want iOS. i bought my wife and in-laws nexus phones because the price/performance of the nexus 4 and 5 were decent and it came with the benefit of faster security patching and without the clunky UI that android manufacturers tend to build. These are all factors why one would want iOS.

        • Price/performance is a big factor, but so is features. That, along with the price and the closed Apple ecosystem is why people don't want iOS.

    • What I don't get is… They don't run the same OS, there's no way to compare two different things.
Benchmarks also don't mean anything when it comes to real world performance either, Samsung's benchmark has always been no.1 but their phones are always the slowest.
iphone has always been described as "smooth", and yet it has less ram and cpu cores etc.

      • there are a couple of ways you can compare: 1. run the same game on both 2. load web pages in chrome

        • -1

Of course, but with web pages often it's out of your control (cellular speeds and server speed etc), definitely one of the most useless tests.
For games you can hardly see a difference on current gen smartphones because we've reached a point that most phones are too powerful already for what people do.
Optimization is the key here, and that's ios' strong suit, but many android phones aren't far off (such as htc and sony).
Also just wanted to comment on the A9 cpu killing the competition, well it's the newest out, what did you expect? The 810 CPU is also Qualcomm's failed product that many try to avoid.

    • It looks to me like there's 4 Samsungs that are faster on Geekbench?

Otherwise I don't understand the comparison. It's like:

Car owner 1: My V8 is faster than your straight 4.
Car owner 2: Yes it is. But how about you turn off 4 of your cylinders.
      Car owner 1: No.

  • I'm really tempted for the Nexus 6P however I was trying to hold out for the Snapdragon 820 - the 810 has got such bad press over the year. The USB-C port also runs at USB 2.0 which is disappointing.
