  • Cheap AirAsia flights out of Adelaide are dead. Long live AirAsia flights out of Adelaide :(

    • Yep I miss that too. Back when they first started flying outta Adelaide I got 380 return to Ho Chi Minh City with 20kg luggage included in that price.

A mate and I flew with them to Phuket in late 2013. Plane was literally half-empty in both directions (to and from KL). Not surprised AirAsia couldn't sustain the route with that sort of capacity but still a damn shame. The only cheap direct overseas flight you can get out of Adelaide is to Bali, which is way down on my list of preferred cheap Asian holiday routes (AirAsia at least got you direct to a known cheap and central Asian travel hub - once you get to KLIA2, the rest of Asia was literally your oyster for not much more).

I suppose you could use Denpasar as an Asian travel hub as well…not sure how effective that would be.

The ~$100 visa fee ($US35 each way =~ $AUD100) surely means its not going to… unless Indonesia uplifts the visa. It was going to earlier this year but now reconsidering

        • @ongrudy Copied from same link that you posted.

"Initially the government of Indonesia planned to also add Australia to this list but decided at the end not to do so. In Sep Indonesia announced again to include Australia starting 1st of October but backed off again last minute on the 28th of Sep."

        • @markj: Good for people who have a second passport.

        • @Nunks: that sentence was not there when I posted the link. Must be added a few minutes after I posted. Lol

        • @eichi: … wish I had a second passport

        • @markj: yeah ive got a UK passport but not that useful if not travelling alone. I figured there would be some roadblock to such a cunning plan. oh well!

    • yeah they axed it, claiming costs and lack of demand. the flights i went on were reasonably full. i think it might have been more out of respect to MH after the incidents so they can return to profitability. maybe we're also too big a cheapskates and didn't buy the overpriced food. melb/syd people tend to spend more, not care as much.

the flights on the way back were probably more usually empty (not as many KL people want to visit adelaide).

      it was also marketed terribly.

it lasted longer than the similarly christchurch-KL flights, but not long enough. still managed to use it 3 times for some short trips.

now it's just better to pay a bit extra and go via singapore, as have to go via melb or syd otherwise.

I have run out of leave with all these cheap flights, can't book until end of next year.

    Serious Question.

With all the issues over the years, why do you guys still fly and book with them?

    • +3

All airlines have same issues, I find Air Asia generally safe like any other airlines in Australia, hard to say the same for some domestic Indonesian Airlines though. Air Asia cut corners via using budget terminal, not direct access to terminal - you have to walk from plane to terminal, no free food and drinks, etc but I don't find them compromised on safety. Flight delays happen more than full service flights though, in fact I preferred Air Asia than Malaysian Airlines when flying into KL.

  • I like AirAsia cause it's always empty (mostly). 80% of the time everyone gets a whole row to themselves (3 or 4 seats).

Edit: And of course the price is great.

    • Flown with them twice in June (SYD-KUL), plane was at least 80% full both times.

      • School holidays?

        • First time yes, 2nd one well before school holidays. No airline can survive when less than half the seats are sold on a consistent basis, they would just reduce the number of flights. I know AirAsia regularly cancels certain flights with very little notice, merging passengers with the next flight so please don't expect a row for yourself when booking this deal or you might come out disappointed. I do envy skazclaw track record though as nothing beats a cheap flight with a whole row to yourself!

        • @bozbargain:

I've had 4 KL-MEL/MEL-KL flights with Air Asia. Two of the Australian ones were completely full (school holidays), the other two were as described, almost everyone seemed to have a row to themselves!

As for the domestic/international flights within Asia they have always been close to capacity.

    meanwhile it's $1000 for a flight to the footy….

    • cheaper to drive?

  • With the fly-thrus, are you able to stop in KL for a few days before moving on to your intended destination?

    • No you have to book the legs separately if you intend to stay longer than 12 hours in KL. Fly Thru is only for connecting to a final destination

  • Serious question, what do you do there? Other than food…

I'd like to go for the sake of traveling, but the last time I went there (KL), it was pretty boring.

Not poor enough to be that different from Sydney, and filled with locals who wouldn't be considered "friendly" by travelers. Also worse if you're Asian, as you'll be mistaken for a Chinese Malay, and discriminated against by the local Malays. (Talk to the local Chinese… They do better than the Malays, which is why they're systematically barred in many things)

Thumb me down but when i left, I thought, "wouldn't want to go there anymore…"

    • KL is probably one of those cities which are great when you know where to go. I think it's also a fantastic hub if you want to go to a tropical island or for an onward journey to Europe - and if you have kids or just don't like flying 24h straight, I find the SamaSama airport hotel combined with KL's arrival and departure flights a great way to get some sleep half way.

    • You can fly from there to other asian cities very cheaply, $20 one way in some cases

    • @inose. Yeh, because Asians aren't discriminated here…

      • Difference though, is that it's institutionalised there… because they do much better than the Malays in general (business, education, housing mainly from what I heard).

  • Amazing value, is it still a good idea to clear cookies prior to booking so they don't jack up the price?
