Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB 2.5" Hard Drive - $69.88 at Target

760

Was out visiting the king(s) at the Elvis Festival in Parkes today and decided to pop into Target and found a Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB 2.5" Hard Drive for $69.88 on clearance. Photo is of the unit I purchased.

There were plenty left - a good half dozen plus. They had red and silver in stock.

This is just a good wee hard drive to have as a spare. Nearly as good as the Big W $69 offered late last year.
This can NOT be pulled apart for use in a TVIX or similar - it's the B8B revision!!!

Check your local Target as they might have some left - who knows they may only be state-wide or interstate, I'm not sure!

  • These are the ones without that stupid Smartware stuff? I didn't bother buying the 640GB one from OW due to the included bloatware (which I heard can only be disabled, not removed fully).

  • It's a model: WD3200MER-00
    Order Number: WDMER3200TA
    Specifications at: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.…

    Hope that helps.

EDIT: And no, no bloatware as they are a different model.

  • Thanks, will check out my local Target tomorrow.

  • Anyone know if these ones work ok with the Wii and USB loader GX?

    • Yes. All WD drives do. Softmodding FTW.

  • Any idea if:

This is a SATA or IDE drive?

    Thanks!

    • All WD passport drives are SATA…. sadly there is no cheap way to get hold of an 2.5" IDE drive these days!

The internal WD IDE 320GB drives sell closer to $150.

  • Only $5 more than the internal one I got this morning.

  • Guys …. correct me if I am wrong, this specific model is an external HD and can't be taken out from its enclosure to be used as a 2.5 internal HD as the author suggested to be used in company with Tvix PVR, right??!!

Yes, these drives can be disassembled and removed from the enclosure. They are not designed to be disassembled easily (or at all), thus the process isn't for the faint of heart, but they do come out. Lots of guides on YouTube on this proceedure.

You will be left with a SATA interface drive, so if the TVIX is a compatible with a 2.5" SATA interface drive you will be in luck!

      • oh interesting …. I didn't know that this is possible …. thanks for the information, but won't you void the warranty if you disassemble the drive?

        • I'm not entirely sure, but I'm guessing the answer would almost certainly be yes….as I say not for the faint of heart!

Anyone seen these in Melb? <fingers crossed>

  • The mark-down date on these (per the photo above) is the 01/12/09 …. odd they hadn't sold out earlier.

  • Is this one at OW the same one? I'd like to get it price match

BTW, I saw 2 WD Essential HDD on OW website, one with shiny case. What is the difference b/w these two?

    • Yes it's the same one. The problem is finding a store that has one in stock, cause this is the older model. The shiny version is the new model. Read the posts at the top of this thread for some information about the new models.

  • Anyone seen these in Sydney?

Went to get the DYMO writer for $34 and saw the following.

Officework (At Five Dock Sydney) has an 640GB 2.5" Western Digital for $129… This is only in Black. They have 320GB in other colours for the same price at $129.

    The model number is WDBM0640BK.

Confirmed with the assistant that the price is not wrong and they have heaps of stock.

  • thanks for posting this deal! We got the last one at Target Darwin. No price tag on it, had to get the guy to scan it to confirm. The new version ones were over $150!

  • Guys, don't disassemble this drive if your intentions are to use it with a pvr. It has no sata connection, only a usb connection. I had the same intentions (to put it in my pvr), I disassembled the drive to find that it had no sata interface. The usb connection is attached to it's pcb.

    • "This is the Revision Number B7B version of this model. There is a R/N: B8B with the same model number Which does not allow the removal of the USB controller as it is built onto the drive."

From the youtube video above: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2ej3zBeCv0

      • I have checked the box and it is a B8B, so forget opening it! Just purchase this hard drive if you require more storage, but DO NOT pull it apart please!!!

  • Oh god, I paid $99 each for these at Office Works, as Christmas gifts, just before Christmas!!

  • Checked at my local Target store, and they had no stock of this older model. Just the new model for like $150.
    The store is Indooroopilly, Brisbane.

I wouldn't worry corkster, you probably couldn't find one for $70, limited stock.

  • No more stock at Melbourne Southlands store - I just took the last one :)

  • Couldn't see any at the Northland Target

  • None at Browns Plains (QLD) Target.

  • This is definitely a great deal; I spent a lot more on mine.

  • Couldn't find this at Target in Canberra City (ACT)
