and heads up apparently you can change the Bluray region coding on this to be both A and B. Instructions from distributor.

  • If the player can accept both regions A and B then it's a plus for me. I'll forgive it for not playing divx.

    • is this confirmed?

    this from dtv forum:

    http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=85057&view=find…

The disc tray must be open, then you type in this code - 973501 for region A
    - 973502 for region B

I have tested this out on about three region locked blu rays and it works perfectly every time. The great thing about this player is it is also a region free DVD player.

  • it plays mpeg4, id say it plays divx, smaller companies dont like using the label 'divx' as it leaves them open to having to pay a fee to use that name :-)

  • then again im not too sure on that one as mpeg4-avc is something do with h264, so do ur research if u want a divx player also. me? im happy with my HTPC…

  • If being region-free is not important to you, then you might like to consider the Panasonic BD60 which can be had at various major retailers for $200 with some haggling.

    • I am considering getting the BD60 today.. cheapest I can find is $300.. but I know Bing Lee had it for $250 a while back (when using their $50 voucher).

Any suggestions on where to find it for $200? I am going to visit JB Hi Fi and Good Guys today and ask for their best price..

      • JB had it for $200, but is back to $298 now.
Clive Peeters might be one to try too.
Just a matter of asking, and even if the best they can offer is ~$225, you would be better off taking it at that price than driving around wasting petrol and time (which you are probably well aware of anyway)!

        Goodluck!

        • Thanks mate, will advise if I find a good deal, in case others are keen on this model.

I do think this DSE one is a good one to consider at $179, but I always like buying premium brand gear, so if I can get the Panasonic for close to $200 then Id go for that.. if not then I might go the DSE option for a while as the specs seem OK.

        • Out of 4 local shops only 2 had stock and only one would go below $270.

So in the end I got it from Clive Anthonys 20 mins ago for $234.

I am in love with this player. It has an option to disable audio over HDMI (as I use coax or fibre optic to go to my 5.1 receiver) so I dont need to remember to turn the TV volume down to zero! Yay!
Right now its updating its firmware to the latest version over the internet via LAN cable… much cooler than my old DVD player.

          • @systmworks: How did you get it to initiate firmware update or does it do it automatically? I have it hooked up to internet but it's just sitting there atm.

My current firmware is dated Aug 2009 but I know there are newer ones floating around (e.g. Dyon blu-ray player in Germany that uses a similar firmware is at Oct 2009 or later already - http://forum.cinefacts.de/209180-dyon-horizon-bd-player.html ).

Was yours a later firmware right out-of-the-box? Perhaps the option for internet upgrade was only added to later revisions. Also I wonder if there is provision for USB/CD updates. I asked DSE about this but no word back yet.

            • @cvxmelody: sorry I missed the part where you said you got a BD60! Anyhow the issue of firmware updates for the DSE AMTC player is still highly relevant. Perhaps if there is enough public "demand" they will make one available..

full HD hard disk players are the way of the future.
Blu-Ray player is simply overated and so passe

$179 may be cheap compared to 6 months ago, I give you that.

    • I think it will be a while before Blu-Ray and DVD go the way of CDs. Especially with movies I think people still need that tangible case they can stick on their shelf, and what's the point of downloading the 16GB when you don't know if the movie's any good and you could just rent it on Blu-Ray?

I think Blu-Rays are the same price as DVDs now at Blockbuster and a lot of other video rental shops.

    • ..the future, yeah.. Maybe in 10 years.

I'll take my chances on a Blu Ray player for the time being.

  • hows the HD sound with this?

** Playing DivX files using the AMTC Blu-Ray Player **

I discovered that the AMTC player baulks on AVI files encoded with divx codec, saying "unsupported format". However, it does quite happily play xvid encoded files.

As it turns out, the player is compatible with divx files, all you need to do is change the FourCC signature in the AVI file to make it look like XVID instead of DIVX. I recommend the following utility:-

    http://abcavi.kibi.ru/index.htm

The procedure is to just load the AVI file that won't play.

Then click on the "Hacks & Tweaks" tab.

Then pick "XVID" preset in the drop-down menu.

    Now save your changes.

The previously unplayable file should now work just fine! So long as not using any strange audio codecs

(I assume the reason the player does not offer direct support of divx is due to licensing issues, etc.)
