  • I don't use this but thats a cheap price for 10W-40, its usually only the 15W-40 or 20W-50 places try to flog off at this price.

Even better for the 10-30 rarely seen on special.

Repco have an equivalent 10-40 gulf western semi synth oil for $15- http://catalogues.repco.com.au/catalogue/repco-catalogue-spr…

      Oranges and Apple's.

I'm sure you don't use GW in your Ferrari.

      • +2

Just saying that there is a similiar oil. No need to be snide.

        • -3

No being snide…it's not a far comparison …that's all.

          Uh yes it is

          5L v 5L
          Semi synth v semi synth
          10W-40 v 10W-40

          @Herp:

Gulf Western is only API SM whereas the Valvoline is API SN/CF. The Valvoline is a better spec of oil and even ignoring this I would be a bit skeptical about the quality of Gulf Western oils without researching it more (and seeing evidence of oil testing to back up its quality)…

        • @stewy:

          Strange…
I see the SM on the Repco site for GW, whereas the GW website with the same product code states SN ??
Anyone seen one in the flesh ?

    • Isn't Valvoline considered far superior to Gulf Western brand?

    • +1

I wouldn't put GW in a $500 runabout, let alone my good car.

  • Engine Armour is semi synthetic?

    • +1

Yes both the 10w-40 and 15w-40 Engine Armour's are a semi-synthetic. You can double check that on the website, where it is listed under 'semi-synthetics/synthetic blends'. I'm not sure what the difference between a semi-synthetic and a synthetic blend is, but this certainly is not listed under the 'full synthetic' product category.

Would personally prefer a full synthetic, but at this price, I'm happy that a quality semi-synthetic should comfortably last 6-8000ks

      • +1

Yes, it's very tempting indeed, you typically get mineral oil for this kind of price and viscosity ranges but think I will have to wait out till the Synthetic special comes around next fortnight…

  • Highly recommend Valvoline Engine Armour, been running the 10w-30 in my car for the past 6 months, and haven't had a problem with it, and the reviews on the Supercheapauto website, and productreview.com.au speak for themselves.
(That's not to say it will be perfect in every car though).

Considering the cheapest it has been previously is $30-35, the current price is really good, too bad I purchased Engine Oil in advance for the upcoming minor service.

Get it while it lasts peoples!

  • Is 10w-30 better than 10w-40? It seems it's often more expensive and more highly regarded, but I kinda thought 10w-40 is more flexible as it gives a wider range between cold and hot environments?

    • -1

it depends on what your car calls for. Some modern cars now even call for 0w-20, so 10w-30 might not even be suitable. Whereas some older cars call for 20w-50, putting a 10-40 might cause a leak.

I heard rule of thumb is use what manufacturer recommends, after about 100,000km move up a little, so 5w-30 to 10w-30, 10w-40 to 15w-40 etc

Just a quick story of mine, my friends Micra 2011 of 80,000km calls for a 10w-30. I thought Aussie summer is coming up, so give her a 10w-40. Engine ended up vibrating a lot, i could even hear the valve tapping on acceleration. And yes, the chart shows that 10w-40 and 20w-50 can be used for this engine when 10w-30 is not available.

        • Yeah in the game oil, each person is to their own i guess.

Regarding the example i gave, wasnt sure what the car was run on but before oil change engine was smooth, after i put helix hx7 10-40 in there, it started doing that. It was just oil change, nothing else. I have done oil changes and service for a number of years on all my cars never a problem. That Micra engine was calling for only 3 liters of oil, so i guess the tolerance between engine parts must be a lot smaller than other engines.

        • +1

          @Azn310:
HX7 is high in detergents, perhaps it dislodged sludge and blocked the pick up or other oil galleys.

        • @ezarc: hope so.. my friend lives far away, so I'm unable to try again. She did mention the car feel fine after a week. Fingers crossed.

    • Generally thinner oil is better. This is a BIG generalisation, but typically the thinner oils are higher specced, whereas the thicker (15w-40 and 20w-50) are morso just oils for older engines.

But theres no point in using a thinner oil if you don't need it, or if you've got a basic car for the 90s / early 00s.

Again these are big generalisations so don't take it as gospel :P

  • I run this stuff in my 08 Prado, (10w30) and it's great. I'll be there first thing tomorrow, I wonder if there is a limit on purchases

    • No limit..I bought 6 today after I asked them in store

  • +4

Yum! Perfect for frying chips or drizzling on salad.

  • Would change oil on my own, but drive way is on a hill… and no car jack.

    Any suggestions?

      • Thanks.

Yeah na don't want to spend £100 on something I could my myself

  • How does this oil stuck against Castrol Magnatec 10w-40, which one is better? Assume it is similar grade oil considering price range where you can also get Magnatec for similar price when on sale?

    • i think its pretty much the same. Magnatec claims that they have tiny teeny magnet-like additive in their oil, and they cling on to the engine parts to keep tiny amount of oil there, so its better for cold start up. Whether thats true or not, no one really knows. Imho, i believe correct viscosity and oil type (eg semi syn, full syn..) is more important than brand (among well known brands of course)

  • Thanks, got the 10W40 today for my older (90s) car. But in thinking of swapping for the 10W30 as the old girl doesn't leak so that might run a little smoother.

    Good find thanks OP.
