  • I just got a house and will move in with wifey after getting married, this is so tempting as I need to buy a TV soon, but the reviews I've read are all so bad, (from whirlpool).

The only decent reviews seem to from people whom don't make any comparisons with other TVs.

    What to do…

    • Take a punt. Make your own mind up. You get two months to return it.

      • +13

No returns on the wife though.
So make sure you make your mind up carefully!

    • +2

There is never going to be a good quality cheap TV, it will either be cheap or have good quality.

Having said that, I doubt that many people will be able to see a difference in the quality unless it was either side by side or the were watching a good one for a good while and changed over to this.

I'd say give this one a go, seeing as there seems to be a change of mind policy so you can test it and see if you like it, you should also be able to adjust the colours anyway.

    • +1

this hasnt even been released yet how are there reviews for the same model?

  • Should post which Aldi you'll line up at so we can spread the load between them, shotgun Bankstown Airport?

    • I will be at the Broadmeadows VIC.

  • +3

With deals like this…. i wish Aldi was in WA :(

  • +1

    chroma 4:4:4 ?

  • My only concern is HDMI 2.2 compliance, but even some brand name ones don't have it! The only Aldi TV with no major complaints from me, and my seal of approval.

  • +2

    WOW.
    Finally a UHD TV with HDMI2.0 at a cheaper price… and 65"
    but but but I don't need a TV :(

    • Just do it. I missed out on a ~$1600 70" TV about 6 months ago and regret it every time I look at my feeble 40".

      • -8

nah.. TVs are going out of fashion fast.
the future is personal screens. Tablets and phones.
I hardly ever watch the actual TV screen any more.

        • +2

I doubt it - as an early adopter of smartphones and tablets, I'll be the first one to say that nothing beats a good old quality home theatre for a personal Gold Class experience.

I actually find the audio quality of my HT far exceeds that of at Village Gold Class - just wish my screen as big as theirs.

So until movie theatres start giving out tablets the punters like the airlines do, big screens aren't going anywhere in a hurry.

        • @elektron:
          Occulus Rift?

        • @Steptoe:
          Remember 3D? :)

        • @elektron:

I mean you won't get a bigger screen than full field of vision, wherever you look.

        • @Steptoe:

And I'm saying it'll go the way of 3D once the novelty factor wears off.

  • +4

Might have to go the day before to buy an Aldi tent to spend the night outside the store in just to get this deal.

    • +1

yep aldi "special buys" are crazy busy. I turned up at opening time for a $200 7ft pool table, and was world war III inside & out the store. Got the last one, sold out within 5mins. No parking anywhere, so pulled up right at the front doors & tied the thing to the roof whilst blocking other cars for 20mins. (profanity) em.

  • Was thinking about getting a TCL 65inch job - with the recent eBay promotion I could have got the U65E5800FS from the goodguys for $1800 or so delivered (less cashrewards, but also with some bonus movie vouchers via redemption). Decided against it, but this is way cheaper again….. must…. resist….. cheap…. tv…. Please tell me why I shouldn't get it.

Reason #1: Bit hard to strap it to the front of my bike to get it home, although I guess I could use a skateboard.

    • +5

Please don't ask for a 65" job. Ever.

  • Lol I just posted this on ozbargain, realised it's a duplicate slow poker! Lol

  • Contrast Ratio: 4000:1

    lolref

    • Almost all LCDs are around 4000:1.

      • +1

People have been mislead by the dynamic contrast ratios manufacturers like to advertise. Some actually do list the native contrast ratio (usually 3-5000:1) but most don't.

        • Yeah it's kinda sad when people have been misled for so long, they actually think the legit measurement is the wrong one..

  • what input lag?????????????????????

    • +5

God can bless my new TV when I load up it up with hardcore porn on the sabbath.

      • Sharing is caring

      • +5

        Warranty clearly states:

"Aldi will not be liable for damage caused by bodily fluids" jokes

        • +3

Just say the Aldi staff put the yoghurt in the same shopping bag as your 65" TV…

        • +1

          @StewBalls:

What size shopping bag are you talking about?

  • So is there a review anywhere on the internet for this TV?

    • +1

      No

  • Though it was a bit strange the model number would be ATVS55-815!

    ATVS65-815

  • Guys im really interested in this, i know cheap is cheap, but if its good enough then its ok… in general the smart tv functions, someone mentioned you cant use netflix, is that a fact ? is there even an app store or something ?

If i dont use the smart features i do have a chromecast but thats presuming i use my phone to mirror my content which is a bit of a pain the ass.

As a smart tv, what can be done ? XBMC, Plex, i have a nas and would rather stream directly through some app if possible. Dont care too much for Netflix as i have Fetch and that has Netflix as an app anyway.

Any info would be highly thumbed up :D

    • +1

I would also be interested if anyone has used plex on the Aldi tvs and how it went. Cheers.

    • If you are running apps through a separate hardware device to the TV of course it will work. Ie. Chromecast and Netflix

  • Finally, a 4k PC monitor with a decent price. Maybe I should return my DELL U3415WP and get this one instead for gaming.

    • Read the comments and lack of clarity on colour space. For gaming it will be fine but I expect you'll be disappointed as a PC monitor for text, web browsing etc.

      • I got the impression the comments are inconclusive.
I'm sure a full IPS Dell 30" range would be superior but for $1200 for 65" and 4k? If it does that 4:4:4 thing they are yapping about, maybe it's good

I'm a picture guy, it's why I have the last of the 65" plasmas.
That being said, size is king… even I would consider an LED (ugh) if I could've got say a 75" at the same price (or larger)

  • Before I get my (and wife's) hopes high and line up how likely is it that Aldi will have more than 2 units per store. 3D would hAve been nice with this

    • +1

If they can get it to this price point…. to hell with 3D.

  • There's no way I can get there on the 12th (or the 11th), can on the 13th.
Do I just forget about it?

    • Pay some you trust to pick it up for you.

You would have to pay them well to lug around a 65" TV in a box that would weigh a bit less than 30KG though, and pay them regardless if they can secure a TV on the day through.

      • Thanks, but can't think of anyone that can/would do it.

  • Can you fit the box in a sedan? backseat maybe?

    • +13

Yes. As long as the sedan is blue… and shaped like a 50 year old English police box.

  • Anybody know anything about the Media player in Aldi tv's? My LG won't play some of the new mkv's, plays some, but not others - very frustrating.

    • +2

Buy an Apple TV, Roku, Chrome (or all of them) and forget about the TV's smart features…

      • Thanks saback. -Got an ATV, useless as a media player, will only play media from iTunes. Great for Netflix though. Guess I'll have to unpack & set up the Amazon Fire tv - still in box. I've just read that the problem with some mkv's on LG tv's is with the audio codecs, mkv being just a container for the audio & video files.

        • Yeah, I installed a few media players on the TCL for when that happens. (Relatively easy since it runs Android) And that's pretty sad to know since when I was in store looking for a TV the salespeople were all, 'LG will play EVERYTHING!'

It looks like they might be running a proprietary platform on this Aldi TV. That, or there seems to be no option for additional players. So I guess it depends on the file.

        • You can access plex from an Apple TV, google for guides.

  • +2

When are the 4k blurays gona start coming out? Xmas or next year ??

    • Some gumby moderated you down, what a spadger, voted you up.

So there's a guy on the internet who's a real super technerd and goes through specification documents, he posts on several forums under the name "Jeff Rigby" - look for his posts on NeoGAF to begin.
Long story short, there's a very good chance some of the first 4k blu rays will be released later this year, there's somewhat of a chance the PS4 may even be able to play them (seems a long shot to me, but Jeff is convinced otherwise)

      • actually there might be some truth behind it , the way 4k blurays work from memory, is that they have an extra layer or 2, but still the same 25gb data per layer, so would make sense.

because i would have thought they (ps4/sony) would have a 4k bluray player at launch, like they did with blurays amd ps3. the other option is to release a new upgraded model that has 4k bluray player….

as with the down vote, god bless these people, and thank god their input in this society is meerley limited to pressing the down button on the internet, and nothing more.

  • Vesa ? I'd need it wall mounted. Guess it could be returned if no Vesa. Anybody know? There doesn't seem to be any mention of wall mounting in the user manual.

  • +1

    Interesting text on the box.

HDMI 2.0. 60Hz at full resolution.

    • Extremely, makes it "monitorable" rather than just a TV.

      • +1

Again I'll bet it's no good as a monitor for colour space reasons.

  • +1

I hope this isnt a stupid however question - in doing some quick reading, it seems that the only way to get any 4k content on a tv (besides your own photos or pc games) is via the netflix app ON THE TV. ie you CANNOT stream 4k netflix from a PC or PS4 to a TV. Therefore, there is currently no way of watching 4k movies on this TV - it has no Netflix app. Is that correct?

    • An NVidia Shield would do the trick. It's an Android TV set top box that supports Netflix 4k.

    • Re 4K support on Netflix through other services. I had asked Netflix about this previously wanting 4K through the browser so I could access it through my HTPC without having to swap back to my TV.
This was the response I received from Netflix support:
"Actually we are currently working with the browsers to make this [4K support] happen as soon as possible, so thank you so much for your support on this one"
      So hopefully coming soon…

  • +1

..and i dont think anyone can get 4k streaming speeds unless they are in an NBN area…

    • +1

Optus and Telstra cable have enough bandwidth unless there is congestion.

  • How noticeable is the 4000:1 contrast ratio?

  • I am also guessing input lag will be average, can we maybe contact Bauhn for details before this sale starts?

  • +1

interesting reading on whirlpool forums about 4k in australia - general consensus seems to be that 4k netflix is still not as good as bluray quality….

    • +2

It still beggars belief to me that bluray is dying a slow death. I mean who are all these people buying 65in screens and not purchasing blurays to watch on it? I can't even watch free to air these days the picture quality is pitiful.

  • +3

I wouldn't be caught dead using something like this as a monitor…firstly it's too big, and secondly LCD tvs are woefully inferior to monitor tech. The colors, blurring, ghosting and legibility are terrible on an LCD TV. I've got a series 8 Samsung LCD tv and its one of the best panels out there but it's terrible for use as a monitor headache inducing even.

You do get what you pay for and with a second rate panel this cheap you are likely to have poor contrast and colour reproduction, ghosting, motion blur and crap internals pushing the picture quality. If it was my $$ I'd rather get a smaller screen of higher quality, in fact as most would be watching free to air or even HD Netflix on this screen it's going to look like a pixelated smeary mess at this screen size (unless you watch tv from the next room). With large 65in TVs the processing chips are critical and need to be dialed in to your tastes in image quality.

    • +1

      Thanks for the info

  • Hey all!

Just wondering, how does buying from Aldi work? never really shopped there before, wanted to buy a deal a few months back but my local store never received stock?

What's the best way to get hands on one of these TVs? I'm in Western Sydney region!

    Please and thank you!

    • Good question. There a few shops near me but not sure if they all get the same amount of stock.

I emailed Bauhn Australia about the refresh rate on this and they said 60 Hz….. do you know why the website would list native 120 Hz, does anyone know the difference?

I’m really sorry this was my mistake, the new 65” ATVS65-815 is 120Hz.

After having a bit of a peruse through the manual I find a couple of omissions a bit troubling.

    1) No mention of 'interpolation' in the settings. This is what gives a 100/120+Hz TV that 'look' of ultra smooth movement. The scaler inside the TV looks at one frame and then the next and will draw new frames between the two actual input frame to smooth out the movement between those frames.

Typically most TVs have an option to control the strength of the interpolation or at least be able to turn interpolation on or off - as it introduces input lag and can be very jarring for some media to have it left on, e.g. movies shot at 24 fps. Interpolation can also introduce unwanted artifacts, especially on fine detail such as someones skin detail on close up shots. There are also some people who just really don't like it (me to some degree - good for sports, some newer action movies and nature documentaries, but that's about it).

This is a really, really important feature to have some degree of control over and there's no mention of it at all. It's also possible that whilst this TV has a refresh rate of 120hz, it will only display content in the input hertz, and not interpolate at all.

    2) No mention of a 'game mode' in the settings. So there is no way to by pass the internal scaler and reduce input lag.

    3) No scaling options. So potentially it's going to be real tough to get a PC to display UHD at a 1:1 pixel ratio.

    • Thanks for the info. I am using it mainly for gaming so this is a concern as my current Samsung LCD does have a game mode and you do notice the difference (improvement) in motion lag when using this mode especially with driving games. I think for the price I am going to give this a try especially with the 60 day return thing. I will camp out early Saturday morning and hopefully pick one up. Will do some testing and advise. The store manager said that if they sell out stock they do have an option to order unsold units from other stores across the country at no cost, so this might be of interest to some.

    • +2

You've basically listed all my potential concerns with this TV. The inability to turn off motion interpolation is a huge oversight. No game mode or scaling I can live with (I just won't play games or hook it up to a PC) but the smooth motion drves me nuts.

    • The lack of scaling and how basic the menus were in the manual really unsettled me. Although a number of people seemed happy with the previous UHD Bauhn, a number also had tales of woe that were also concerning. As much as I'd like a screen this size, even if I was lucky enough to get one I'm certain I would have regretted it. Maybe fine for the kids room or something, but….. instead I went and got one of these (http://www.tclelectronics.com.au/product.asp?pid=177&cid=50) from Costco (Docklands) for $1279.99. At 'only' 58 inches it's smaller of course, but TCL seem to have a good rep and this has way better features than the Bauhn. Most, like the 3D, I'll almost certainly never use, but I reckon I'll sleep easier. Plus I should get some free movie tickets (https://secure.edgepromos.com.au/tclmissionimpossible/Ticket…).

  • +1

What we really need is an Aldi worker to open one up early and post their results. I'd pay 50-100 bucks for this.

    • +4

I'd pay 50-100 bucks for this.

When you could borrow the TV free for 60 days? Guys, we need to revoke his OzBargain license…

  • So Just buy the darn thing if you can get one on the day and if its not up to your requirements or standards return it the next day. Is this is the general understanding? I just want to use a HTPC and xbox on it.

    • +2

Return it on the 60th day ;)

  • I might just go to Aldi tomorrow to see the bloodbath this deal will create. I hope a few Ozbargain members video the footage and upload it — I love riots!

  • Ok, I admit I've been caught up in the hype. Woke up at 4:30 and couldn't get back to sleep…just arrived at 6:45 & first in line at my local Aldi. :)

    • LOL. You are not alone.

    • Me too. Its going to be a long lonely wait.

  • Already at my local waiting since 6 am first to arrive. Already 5 people in line. My Aldi insider told me they will only have 20 units available in each store.

  • Update now 15 in line.

  • Make sure if you decide to return the unit to keep the box as well. They prefer to sell the unit again with the box and unit altogether. So you don't have any drama's with Aldi.

  • Now 25 with an hour to go.

    • +1

Wow, I'm still here by myself. :)
