  • its only got a 16gb HD what's the point of having dual OS when there's no room to install apps?

  • How do they get more ram while docking ? Didn't realise that was possible.

this device has two complete/discreet systems, rather than one system that is expanded by the base.

the screen is an android tablet (with cpu, ram, etc), and the base is a windows machine (with it's own cpu, ram, etc). unlike other similar systems which have the cpu and ram in the screen, and the base simply adds more battery/storage/etc.

      • Discrete maybe. Discreet - unlikely. :)

aha, yeah, discrete, i meant. ;)

      • Good explanation thanks for that. That makes sense then. So android when not dock, windows when docked.

        • yeah pretty much:

          undocked:
          -tablet is android only
-base works as a windows box, connected to external monitor (handy if sharing between two users)

          docked:
-switches between windows/android at the touch of a button

i think that's how they count the "trio" in the model name.

  • It has 500G HDD on keyboard with windows installed.

  • The HDD (standard laptop size) can be swapped out for an SSD, but the 4GB of RAM is not upgradeable (soldered on). Pity.

  • Interesting device

Basically the keyboard is like a nuc and the screen is an android tablet with proprietary video input. You can't run windows in tablet mode since the installation/processor is in the keyboard

Not sure if I had extremely bad luck, but I once bought a refurbished ASUS laptop.
When it arrived, the screen was dead, would not work, sent it back.
Arrived again, a USB port wasn't working, touch screen was not working, sent it back.
Arrived again, screen kept changing brightness randomly, the brightness level on the slider didn't change but the ACTUAL brightness was changing. Not sure if that made sense.

Anyway I decided I could live with the last issue and was too lazy to send it back again

  • You can connect the base unit to a monitor and use the screen separately which is unusual.

  • The question is should I cancel the order that I made for the Dell 2-in-1 deal that was posted last week (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/208692) and get this Asus? This Asus has an i5 processor and 4gb ram (not upgradable) slightly larger screen while the Dell has an i3 processor and 4gb ram (upgradable to 8gb) and slightly smaller screen… Any thoughts would be appreciated…

I was in the same boat as you. But after carefully looking through the specs, they are totally different, for different use case.

One major difference is, for the Asus, once the screen is detached, windows no longer works on the screen because the cpu is in the keyboard. The plus is you can use the keyboard as a desktop with external monitor and give the screen acting as android tablet to you kids to play games.

      • Thanks for the reply - did you end up keeping the Dell? I guess you are right, I only use a tablet (or tablet mode) to watch movies. I got the Dell because I needed a laptop and wanted the opportunity to replace my tablet to watch movies. I think it would be pretty annoying to have to make sure that the movies are on the Asus tablet before I detach the tablet, whereas I can just flip the Dell becoming much easier.

  • Intel Core i5 3337U?? Is this correct? Seem a few generation old CPU
ANy one know what the screen resolution is?

  • I see quite a few refurbished Asus laptops being sold by quite a few vendors. Wireless 1 being another shop.
Do these have a high failure rate?
