What is so good about this kettle or other expensive ones compared to say big W's generic homebrand that cost under $10?

    http://www.bigw.com.au/product/1-7l-c-less-kettle-wk8283aasm…

    That's 7.58 times more kettles I will have :)

    • since you asked, i'd say…

Dual sided, high visibility water windows make it easy to make sure you don't heat more water than you need. Also features a push button, soft opening lid to prevent hot water splattering, a 1.7 litre cordfree jug, concealed element, and a removable scale filter. Takes the stress out of de-stressing.

      • +3

Doesn't satisfy me lol, the $7.50 kettle does the same job with the same amount of water and the same taste without the high price tag.

I still can't understand why would you spend that much when there's heaps more with half the price.

I understand some kettles can also be temperature control and illuminating light surrounding it, then yes the price would be dearer.

You + community have revoked the -1 vote from "theone4u" on this deal

just because it isn't a bargain to you, doesn't mean it isn't to others… this is what the voting button is for

          Doesn't satisfy me lol,

          creepy…

        • We used to have the cheapos from Woolies/bigw at work. Went through at least 2 a year. The plastic guard protecting the electrical pins always broke after a few months. Sometimes it's just the spring lever but other times the actual plastic snaps.

For home use it might be OK to waste time replacing them regularly but I'd rather spend 5 times more and not go through the hassell.

        • @wyrmy: funny you say that about quality, I thought the same and decided to buy mum a poshy sytlish one that cost at the time $59… U guessed what happened next, it burnt it's self out within a few weeks, I must've gotten a dud,but I should've listen to mum earlier not to buy expensive ones. She went back to the alchepo $7.50 she has had for the last 6+ years. I have since stayed with the cheap brands for kettles :)

        • The Breville is stainless-steel, whilst the Big W one is plastic.

I'm not very comfortable with heating plastic. Stainless steel for the win!

        • @Droz: it's not like they design the plastic to melt after 10 use, obviously they are designed to hold high temperatures.

What difference does make in having a stainless-steel compared to plastic, i have not once! in over 5+ years i have ever seen one of these kettle melted… it would be absurd for it to melt after boiling some water. Plus i don't get the metal taste off the stainless-steel. anyway my preference is the cheaper alternatives that will just do the same job.

          To Boil some water =)

        • @theone4u:

It's not about the kettle melting - I've never seen a plastic kettle melt either - it's about the plastic chemicals leaching into the water - i.e. BPA and all the other resins and disruptors that leach out of the plastic. It's why water in plastic bottles ends up tasting funny after a while, especially if you re-use the bottles.

I don't see why you're getting negged… I'm of the same view, my stove + pot is perfectly fine to make hot water, far easier to clean as well!

To me these kettles are in the same category as things like dishwashers and Margherita machines… there's your money aaaaand it's gone!

Please don't anger the economy with your excess spending

      • +1

dont put margherita machines in with dishwashers.. dishwashers are far more useful.

you could put dishwashers in with washing machines, since you could simply wash your own clothes with soap and water, or you can get a machine to do it!

    • Does the Big W generic kettle match the stainless steel of a McMansion kitchen?

  • +3

Yeah… just because it's cheaper doesn't mean it's a bargain. Can't see anything in this that my $12 KMart kettle won't do. It's all glass, so the argument about water use is not applicable.

Not negworthy IMO… but not a deal either.

    • +1

I can see 1 thing that it does that your cheapy Kmart one doesn't - it's 2400W when I can assure you anything under $20 is 2200W, I know this because I was recently in the market for a kettle.

Some people also have 'looks' to their kitchens and don't want to throw it off by a white kettle. Personally I do not and it is filled with cheap plasticy stuff.

      • +2

So.. you're telling me that i need to wait a few more seconds for my water to boil?

      • +2

        it's 2400W when I can assure you anything under $20 is 2200W,

Same element with a different label. There is a lot of leeway in those numbers.
Actual power depends on your local supply voltage.

China is 220V, so 10A gives 2200W. If you have 230V, you get 2400W. I get about 245V in WA, so about 2730W from the same kettle, assuming constant resistance.

    • $12 sounds like a great deal - was that on special? I might wait to see if it hits that price again.

The KMart page currently doesn't have that price on anything good… $19 for a plastic one: http://www.kmart.com.au/category/Home-&-Garden/Shop-by-Categ…

And only $47.20 click and collect. More than 50% off RRP. If you're looking for a brand name and stainless steel it looks like a pretty good deal to me. If you want el cheapo then it's not for you but it is for me and I ordered one. Thanks OP.

We have a cheap Kmart kettle in the office, many glaciers have formed and melted before that kettle can boil water. I have a 8+ year old Breville kettle not dissimilar to this at home, at least if I'm informed of incoming ICBM's I can actually have a last cup of coffee before they hit.

    • a bit of an extreme example perhaps?

      :)

But we ARE talking about coffee I s'pose

    • You've done well if the 8yo Breville is not leaking. Does it have a big window like this one?

      • Are they known to leak? Ours just started to but mind you it is at least 9 years old.

  • bought 1! thanks

  • Bought one, Click & Collect, $47.20…..I call that a bargain :) IMO

    Thanks OP!!

  • Thanks OP! Bought 2.

  • Thanks OP! Bought 1

The Kettle from Kmart for $29 - Homemaker Quiet Boil F-743SQ (Choice Recommended).

I personally have the Red Stainless Steel, and it's worked a treat for almost 2 yeasr now.

  • +1

Does the water level indicator really show as two colours (green/black), like the photo?

I need a kettle with an easy-to-read water level indicator, I find most kettles are difficult to read.

  • Any better verions of this on sale "Homemaker 1.7 Litre Glass Kettle"

    http://www.kmart.com.au/product/homemaker-1.7-litre-glass-ke…

I find that these are a bit cheap with plastic clips that break after a few months (personal experience) and the bottom gets moldy looking rust spots on it (very visible because it's clear.

    • Those spots are probably mineral build up from boiling 'hard' water.

You can clean this by boiling 1/2 vinegar 1/2 water solution. Your kettle will be as good as new!

      • Thanks mate ill give it a go! how much do you think 250ml each?

        • I fill it up, but here's something I found on the 'net.

"HOW TO CLEAN LIMESCALE OFF THE KETTLE

Fill the kettle with 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water. You don’t need to fill the entire kettle, just enough to cover the heating element
          Boil the kettle
Allow the water to cool in the kettle for 20-30 minutes
Tip out the water and rinse the inside of the kettle with tap water, repeat to ensure all vinegar and limescale is removed
Wipe over the outside of the kettle to remove all dust and dirt, then dry (the outside) with a cloth
          Notes:

For lingering vinegar smell, rinse the kettle several times or fill kettle and boil, tip out water
For stubborn limescale repeat the above process, increase the amount of vinegar, 2 parts vinegar to 1 part water"

  • Can someone please explain to me how to use the cash reward thing. Thank you.

  • interesting that unlike its Moda predecessors, the BKE495 is not marketed as featuring Quiet Boil Technology - indeed, none of Breville kettles seem to be :(

  • Called up TGG, they said they only have a display model left and can't get any more orders. This is after I had purchased this on ebay. In addition, they told me that the store doesn't process the discount and only corporate does it which is why I was charged the full $59 despite entering the discount code. Told them to give me a refund instead.

    • Called up TGG, they said they only have a display model left and can't get any more orders

Unless you care to elaborate, that only sounds like 1 store you called and had the issue with.

Or did you call head office or somewhere?

I don't see how one store only having a display model affects people from buying through other stores that possibly have it in stock…

      • Called up the Auburn branch in NSW and they said that this model has been discontinued, city stores didn't have them either. I was told that it may be possible to get some other stores to ship it in but it may take up to a month or more. Regarding the discount, I have no idea why that wasn't processed because the email I received from paypal said that it was, but my CC was charged the full amount… perhaps an isolated incident? Not sure about others.

        • Thanks. I'm trying to work out why the deal has been marked expired, because myself and at least one other person have since bought one.

Re: discount, mine looks ok for now but my bank hasn't been debited yet.

Did you go into the PayPal transaction to have a look? Mine is clearly there, the discount info. I'd be taking it up with PayPal - if I were you

        • @nismo:

Had a look at my paypal transaction and the full amount is showing up. I'll wait a day or two to see if my refund shows up, if not I'll check up with paypal.

past order was automatically immediately transferred from one store (click+collect) to another (delivered) at no extra charge

  • Used it for the first time tonight, does anyone else find the kettle extremely loud while it's boiling water? Also the surface of the kettle is relatively hot to touch once the water is boiled.

    Might be refunding this one
