  • Wow!!

    • A hint of sarcasm perhaps Dave-o? I know it's not the cheapest it has been but it's a good beginners camera. They were as low as $29x but hey..

      • +1

i doubt its sarcasm, this is a great price for a more than capable entry level DSLR.

        • really? been kinda wanting to get a camera, smartphone ones aren't cutting it for me, not sure bout having to hold it around all the time though. any advice

        • @kirbycake:

Yes buy the samsung nx1000 was $639 when released a couple of years back i just got one delivered from harvey norman for $218.95…$238-$25 welcome code + delivery……
          http://www.harveynorman.com.au/samsung-nx1000-compact-system…

        • A few years ago I made the grave error of not taking the advice of a good and reliable Bing Lee employee when she told me "don't buy the Samsung camera". I was wrong, she was right, and she was even kind enough to process the return a couple of days later without so much as an "I told you so" (though I definitely deserved it). Samsung make perfectly good household appliances, but… friends don't let friends buy Samsung cameras.

        • @douglasb:is there anything that you would recommend? just for pictures

        • @kirbycake:

I think that Canon and Nikon are the 'true' camera manufacturers, and that they're as good as each other. I subscribe to the Canon religion - I have a bunch of Canon DSLRs, lenses, point-and-shoot cameras, waterproof housing, etc - but if Nikon is your preference, I see no reason why you shouldn't go with that.

IS/VR is great, but doesn't always work well with moving subjects. Both Canon and Nikon address that limitation in the more expensive cameras/lenses (with an option that switches off horizontal IS/VR for shooting moving subjects). Understand how IS/VR works, and its inherent limitations, and you'll find happiness!

Optical zoom is king, digital zoom is best ignored (as a feature when comparing models).

I've heard good things about Olympus P&S cameras from people who know what they're talking about.

Fuji lost me when they started lying about the true resolution of their cameras (they arrange elements in their sensor arrays in an interlocked 'diagonal' pattern, interpolate images, and claim that resolution is greater than it really is).

I think that Samsung make great washing machines.

        • @douglasb: Care to elaborate on your experience and the actual camera model?

        • @kirbycake: Sony A6000 or Micro Four Thirds - there have been some good prices posted here for the previous model Olympus cameras.
The Samsung gets a good review for image and video, but lenses may be an issue, though there may be adapters like with other mirror less cameras(Sony Panasonic Olympus). Also, being a Samsung, product life span may be an issue.

        • @douglasb:
Yeah but what model was it.

  • -1

A junk DSLR. The sensor is over 6 years old, dynamic range is comparable to a PnS, burst mode only manages 3fps. DIGIC 4 is 7 years old, it's viewfinder magnification is the worst in it's class, only 1 cross-type AF, no on sensor phase detect, no WiFi.

    Avoid it.

    • I know it is a little bit off track, but wound you mind comment on the canon eos 60d? would you to here it out.

      • Five year old camera that uses the DIGIC4 processor, shutter is noisy, overuse of noise suppression above 6400 iso, 5fps burst mode, no automatic auto-focus in movie mode (needs to be activated every time you want to change focus field which ruins the transition more often than not because it's susceptible to searching), sensor vibrates to remove dust so will need to be manually cleaned occasionally, its prone to developing an unwanted soft focus issue, slow focus in Live View mode….

Lots to grumble about but it takes very good stills for its age if you respect its limitations. Much better options out there.
