there is no free glass or free samples

So this is in essence a sale pitch?

      • That's right, along with feeling like they're inadequate as a man unless they've consumed some quantity of an alcoholic beverage (see below) they also pay to travel somewhere to be shown marketing.

      • "Dan Murphy's experts will guide you through six sensational drams"

        Again. You get six samples.

I'm not sure how you could read this in any other way. They're not going to just talk about six whiskys.

    • Does anyone have a link for info & booking for the Whisky Showcase (ACT) for 2015?

    • +1

Actually, this is the way it was clearly described in an email I got from Dan Murphy's:

This August and September, we're hosting two exclusive members-only whisky events.

The first, held in-store, is an intimate discovery workshop to broaden your understanding of the famous spirit.

The second, held at five venues nationally, will showcase 40 whiskies – including some old and rare discoveries.

      Event 1:

      Whisky Discovery Workshop

A delicious exploration into the world of whisky! With six to sample, you'll discover what makes each unique while learning about their intriguing histories.

      Event 2:

      Whisky Showcase

With approximately 40 tastings on offer, this whisky event has it all! Enjoy food and live entertainment while sampling a whisky selection from around the world.

      (emphasis mine)

    • do you also get back a ~ $49 voucher/gift card?

Thanks OP, I always meant to do one of these and well they're still essentially free so booked myself and a mate in to do one as learning a bit about Whisky is one of those 'notches' on one's Man-Belt that should be done. Cheers.

I did the Whisky Trail when in Scotland for the true man belt notch. Wish I could remember what it was like to do though…. Things kind of go blurry after Edinburgh ;-)

      • Reminds me of the time a long, long time ago I did a tour of Glenfiddich as part of a Contiki bus tour - back in the days when you got a glass of Glenfiddich after the tour. Most of the 30 on the tour bus were young and female and not keen on scotch so I generously offered to drink their sample for them.
From what I remember it was the highlight of the trip.

But the drink sampling was the highlight? :P

@Spackbace: Well I was with my girlfriend….so yes.

  • +1

    Well that's confusing.

  • +2

If they told people what the exclusive offers were before they go I dare say there would be lots of signups. Marketing fail.

  • Last time I went to one of these near Alexandria, it was a paid event (whisky showcase) with the free glass. It was in the back of the store in a side room, however it was so packed you couldn't move. Completely oversold, either have a bigger venue / more tasting tables or don't bother

    • Agree. I was also at Alexandria at the Whisky Showcase.

When they say "With approximately 40 tastings on offer" they really do mean "on offer". It is hard to get a chance to try them all.

  • Something i've always wanted to do, so thanks! Booked in for one.

I just got an email saying "Don't forget to collect your $15 Dan Murphy's gift card* on arrival."

$15? Oh hellllll no. I will be complaining loudly if they only give a $15 card. It says $20 on their website.

    • Interesting. Will check my email when I get home…

    • Laugh, just got the $15 gift card email as well, had to come back here to check what was going on…

      • Just got the correction email. They will be giving a $20 voucher.

    • Yep just checked. $15. wtf?

    • "Unfortunately the $15 quoted in this email was an error. The correct value of the Gift Card you will receive is indeed $20."

  • +1

So… just got there and was told Head Office didn't tell them about it and they weren't set up, and are offering it tomorrow instead. To which I can't go to.

    :(

    lol. Comedy of errors!

      • Nah, i'm not overly pissed off. A bit disappointed (was rather looking forward to it) but like I said to the poor girl telling everyone, if this is the worst thing that happens to me i'm a pretty lucky guy.

She was copping it left right and centre from people getting aggressive and angry over something which they had no control over. A lot of anger from people in an age bracket that I personally believe should know better. I felt very sorry for her. Seems a head office (profanity) up, and given yesterdays gift card email, seems the whole thing has been organised by a retarded monkey.

They took everyones details and the manager will call tomorrow to organise alternatives/refunds/whatever.

  • Went to this this arvo- was well organized and great value for 30 cents. The hosts were excellent and we ended up with 8 tastings. Will be back for the next one
