Yeah… these are what 300 lumens? A 50w halogen will have 700 lumens.
Waste of time, unless you like living in the dark or have a very high density of downlights.Agree with you guys, should be at least 7 watts to get at least the 35 watts effects. I have tried 4 watts before, it is a waste of money.
Try the Philips 5.5w downlight. It lists as 400lm, really comparable to 35w halogen lights. However it is only in mr16 12v setup.
I have 4 x MR16s in the dining room that are spread out a bit far, halogens were good but in this application, the only LEDs that worked were the Philips Master 7W LEDs. Certainly as good light output and spread as the previous 50W halogen.
Probably suit my up/down lights out the front of the house though, don't need to be bright. Don't currently use them coz I'm too cheap to burn 200W for a bit of ambience :)
What's the length on these? My fittings don't have room for anything longer than the standard size.
Agree tho that retrofitting these for room lighting is not very effective. Shell out few bucks more for a full fitting replacement and you'll be a lot happier in the long run (though I realise for most the electrician fees adds a lot to the proposition. Just make sure they install plug bases for each one, so you can plug in a replacement if you ever need it.)
I got 10 so called 600 lumen 12w MR16 down lights for $28. It's slightly better than the aldi 5w, not enough to replace 50w halogen, but enough for hallways, bathrooms, stairs etc.
Cheaper on eBay for <$3/eachI would not go purely by the higher the Watts, the brighter.
Most of my 50 x LED GU10/MR16 are unbranded Ebay 9W that I have had for the last 2 years. Today I purchased some Bunnings Click 5W LED bulbs and I was very impressed, so much brighter than my old 9W ones, as the light has 3 bulbs on a rail, even to a point the light was too bright at first..
A good time to replace those 50w halogens… If you want less than half the brightness of one.
