Built for Rugged Australian and New Zealand Conditions

No good for my trip to Afghanistan next week then.

  • For me, the price shows as $287.54 in the search results, but $449.90 on the product page.

This usually means the cheaper price is yesterday's deal. You can buy at the cheaper price by clicking the "Add to cart" button on the search result page until around 7-8am when the search result prices update to today's prices.

    • i just saw that they are RRP again. But at least someone might get a bargain if what youre saying is right, and DS honour it.

      My bad.

  • With almost everything having gone encrypted digital I'm surprised there is even a market for these anymore. I use my scanner almost exclusively for aircraft these days. I have no interest in CB radio chat as all I've ever found is idiots when listening in and the handful of times I've managed to talk to someone using my 1km range handhelds.

Truckies don't use encrypted digital. Nor do 4WD'ers off-road.

If you are just sitting at home listening, you'd be better getting a base station than a mobile rig. And if all you're going to do is listen, particularly with interests beyond CB, a wideband receiver would be better than a 400-520 MHz scanner.

I wonder if aviation will eventually go digital

Eventually I think they'll go digital though that's going to rely on the transmission range being able to match analogue because that matters fast moving aircraft. SO even this has some big technical barriers. I doubt they're insurmountable.

Whether or not encrypted depends on the logistics. It would be disasterous if aircraft and ATC couldn't talk because their equipment is incompatible or their encryption keys around out of date.

You also need a lot of countries to agree to switch over or run a dual system for some extended period of time. And you also have to worry about small aircraft/general aviation.

  • Bought one this morning when were on sale again for $293… Got a call a few hours later that they had been recalled australia wide from all stores.

    Nice work dick

    • What now? Recalled for what?

It still appears on their web at $293.

      • They dont know why, Probably realised they sold them too cheap

        • Theres no official announcement of a recall, and these being NB models and not S, says they are older stock so its not like it would only just now be noticed if there was a fault that warrants a recall.

Might be worth asking GME for confirmation of a recall, and if none, passing on all info to the ACCC or fair trading.

        • I rang Uniden, They had no records of any recall. I also rang another store that had them in stock and the guy on the phone didn't know why either, the manager just told him they have been recalled.

I think they meant that Dicks head office had recalled them Australia wide

        • @Tuba: GME?? … asshat

  • Got a refund from DS and did some reading, turns out the scanner function is pretty well useless in WA. Ended up getting the UH8060S with a GME AE4018K2 for $303 from a reputable retailer her in Perth… http://www.prestigecom.net.au/uniden-uh8060-s-80-channel-uhf…
