Any reviews out there which elaborate on OPs comment?

    • this^
wont buy until someone posted review. this shop is just like $2 Chinese shop cheapo stuffs (except branded items like weber of course)

    • I've got the a down vest from Rays - pretty sure it's the same brand/spec. I reckon it's great. Wearing it with a hoody I've been quite warm at 1-2deg the last few weeks.

  • -3

I really doubt abt quality of this jackets. Similar of those available at Rivers in $15 under specials…..

    • +5

Pretty sure a down jacket would be much warmer then a poly one?

      • +6

Yes indeed. Two completely different products. No comparison.

  • +2

Thanks OP. Like the slim fit cutting on the waist. $54 very good price for a warm down down jacket.
Have enough myself otherwise will get one.

    • +2

Slim fit…. hmmm that would nicely accentuate my kegpack. I hear the ladies go nuts for a dad bod.

  • Thinking whether or not I should buy this for my dad. Will it keep him warm in 5 degree C climate?
Shipping is $7.95 for me. Sold out everywhere in inner Sydney.

  • Last time they were advertised, WA had minimal stock and sold out of most sizes almost immediately

  • +4

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago for $90 to cope with the freeze in Melbourne. Can definitely recommend them. Light but very warm which suits me perfectly. Thought it was a sweet deal at $90 compared to the $200 plus you pay at Katmandu etc. for jackets like these. At $54 its a bargain. Thinking of buying another one just cos its so cheap - the Ozbargain way!

    • +2

The ozbargain way leaves out the thinking part

      • +3

lol, just ordered one online. You're right, no room for thinking here!

        • Different color though. hopefully will pass the wife's interrogation :-)

        • +2

@Danielburn: should get the same colour to go undetected

        • tried that before - hasn't worked!

    • how was sizing? run big or small or just right for you? your height/weight? got a beer gut or skinny?

      • +10

bugger waiting. ordered an XL and XXL. got to plan for the future!

        • sorry…..missed this til this morning. large for me. I'm about 175cm and 85kegs. small beer gut (working on it) L fits me perfectly. XL was quite big around the waist when I tried it in the shop.

  • Been holding off buying a down jacket, but thought I'd eventually bite the bullet and get a $200 Kathmandu V3 one for males…then I see this! Any ideas how it compares to the Kathmandu ones? Could potentially be saving almost $150!

  • +3

they do not have size chart ? i am not sure which size i should buy

    • Yea weird

  • +3

I bought one of these jackets last time they were around $50.
They are very warm and comfortable, however nowhere near the quality of a Kathmandu one.
The zips are quite basic/budget, as are the cuffs and the collar.
I've actually buggered mine by wearing it when I did some welding, now it's slowly leaking all the feathers out a bunch of miniature holes caused by welding sparks.

    • +2

Isn't it dangerous welding and wearing one of these jackets? Lol

    • How's the sizing on these? The picture makes it look like a slim cut, but the sizing on the 800L loft jacket seems to be on the larger side based on the lone reviewer

      • +1

It's pretty on the money. I'm quite tall and skinny with long arms, and I grabbed a M and it fits fine. The L was just too big.
Best to probably go and try it on at the shop if you can - it's what I did.

    • Macpac is on sale for $119 we dont need one right now so will wait for further discounts. Preferably The North Face, MAcpac or Kathmandu. We need one for general n travelling. I personally wear Columbia for backcountry but I like these jackets that you can stuff in the pocket or a sac.

    • "now it's slowly leaking all the feathers out a bunch of miniature holes caused by welding sparks."

      LOLLL comment of the day.
      love it

  • +1

You can get one with a higher loft fill and hood for $90, if you prefer that styling. I can't really comment on the quality:

WHERE WERE YOU A FEW HOURS AGO

      shakes fist

      • at $90 cant u stretch to $119 for quality brand Macpac 50% off?

        • +1

no, i wouldn't be on ozbargain if i could.

  • Alright i bought one.

  • +1

Thanks OP. i bought one! Really would need this because didnt realize Perth was this cold!

  • I got one last week at $89, very impressed by it. Light, very warm and built in stuff sack in one of the internal pockets. When stuffed into that sack it's kind of like a magic trick, you can't believe it can fit in such a small container. Wore it out at Mudgee last weekend, -2 Friday night but I was perfectly comfortable. I think this is a steal at $54.

    • That one was different, 800 not 500 down

      • It was the 550, I have the tag right in front of me. Got it for $89.99 down from $179.99.

  • Also available in blue - http://www.raysoutdoors.com.au/online-store/products/Outdoor…
Ive already got the uniqlo Ultra light down otherwise i would probably have jumped on this

  • Is it just online? Might go try one on

    • Ditto, does anyone know if this price is available in stores?

Now I know everything there is to know about down jackets. Ask me a question.

But there is a lot that I don't know about this jacket because it isn't in the specs, like how much down is there, what construction method is used, etc? Seems like good value for a medium warm jacket that will be good for travel because it packs small.

  • I have a $59 full down jacket i bought at aldi on a sale 3 years ago. I've used it each year since when i camp at Thredbo diggings camp site. Its the best jacket I've ever owned and the warmth is amazing.

I imagine this jacket would be similar or better quality. I'm sure for this price you can't go wrong, if your considering buying it. Down is a great jacket filling imo

    • What happens when it rains? Do you wear it as a mid layer?

In general down isn't warm when it gets wet.

      • thats true i'm sure its rubbish when wet but any warm puffy style jacket I'd assume you don't want wet. I've not experienced it when wet, but I'd probably put my lightweight waterproof shell jacket over the top.

But in temps below 5C i'd wear a thermal bottom layer > tshirt > mid layer fleece > down jacket. That was more than enough warmth

  • Can't order online anymore :(

    • Looks like still available in the Dark Green and the Blue colours.

  • Camperdown and Castle Hill stores out of stock.

  • +1

Was just at the balcatta WA store. Quite a few on rack in all 3 colours, but I think all the medium and 2xl black are gone. Storeperson was pulling online orders off the rack as I walked in. Also sizes are quite big, I went in thinking either medium or large and walked out with a small.

    • Thanks for the tips on the sizing almost ordered an M.

  • Also they have the 800 down version also on sale for $90

  • Plenty of blue/ink and green ones left at Brighton (Vic). No black stock left in medium or small which is what I was after, but there was one black in XL left.

I agree with the above poster in that the sizes are big. Go for a small if you are a medium.

Staff mentioned most flew off the shelves when they were discounted the first time, and now the rest are flying off now that they are $54.

I ended up getting a small in blue, its pretty quality. I only tried the fit for a minute and I could start to feel the heat. The liner feels like it will last years and its a light jacket.

  • can anyone comment on the sizing please… i usually wear a medium

    • I 'm normally somewhere between an XL and a L but found the L to be perfect so I suspect they are on the larger size.

  • ordered online..thanks op

  • I ordered a Medium (I usually wear medium) so hopefully it fits well and not TOO big !

    • if you usually wear a medium one, you will need a small..

this is quite bigger compared to the standards..

      • crap…will find out when it arrives

  • Ray's Outdoors is sooooooooooo slow. I had to wait 1 week for them to ship my last order and now I'm still waiting for them to give me confirmation so I can pick up the product in store.

    • You haven't shopped at Masters then or possibly 50%+ of other online retailers.

      • I meant 1 week to pack then dispatch the order and another week to receive the order.
Yes, I generally avoid small online shops. I stick to eBay, Amazon, Target, and next-day delivery companies.

  • Thanks bought one and the vest

  • +1

with stores already bringing out spring clothing u guys cant wait a few more weeks when The North Face, Marmot, Columbia, Macpac, Kathmandu, Mountain Designs, will have their sale?

The Columbia half fleece and full fleece is the cheapest I've seen yet at Rays Outdoor. Back country clothing last for years. I still have my 3 in 1 Bugaboo from more than 10yrs ago. Macpac has down jackets half price mens $119. Better resale too.

Tip for womens small sizes can get away wit boys sz 10 or 12. Yes the problem is rain. Not good for hiking but a light puffer vest is good with a rain and wind proof shell outer.

We r going skiing in japan then phuket so i desperately need packable warm jackets but still waiting for better deals.

    • Macpac has down jackets half price mens $119. Better resale too.

Jackets arn't cars mate. Sorry to about being crude but what sort of plebs buy used jackets, don't take mackemore's thrift shop too literally. Maybe a ski jacket used a couple of times, but that's pretty much the only scenario I can think of.

      • Holy crap, there's a whole new market I'm missing out on

      • ppl with kids? they grow so quick. we sold all our kids ski clothing just recently. We do spend a bit more for the kids because they stay out on the slopes all day and we want to make sure they are extremely warm. Otherwise they will be complaining.

These type of clothing generally last for yrs so I'd prefer a reputational brand. Though i'm not sure hubby really cares at all.

    • Tip for womens small sizes can get away wit boys sz 10 or 12. Yes the problem is rain. Not good for hiking but a light puffer vest is good with a rain and wind proof shell outer.

Agreed. Only difference is that boys is a bit shorter in length.

      • lol i'm short and length is fine on me.

  • I ordered Large and received Extra Large, not happy!

  • this is why i don't work from home.. ended up buying this..

  • Got to Merribrong store, they had none for my size.

They helped me to find one at Preston, VIC. Plenty of size M in there for both man and woman :)

  • +1

Ordered a large which is my usual size. Got it today but it's a bit too big, so hoping to exchange it instore for a medium.
This would not have happened if they had a simple size chart

Pretty nice otherwise, though the zippers are so cheap and crap, they'll probably break soon :(

    • Went to the store to exchange sizes, staff were nice and swapped it no probalo. too easy :)
They only had medium in the olive colour (which looked way nicer in person) so ended up with it. So warm and soft.

  • More mistreated and dead ducks in china = cheap down jackets get a good synthetic one and be happy that you have not contributed to another animals suffering.

    • +2

i like to think of it more as recycling. for the ducks that will end up on a dinner plate, at least their feathers will live on forever keeping me warm.

  • Just got email saying it is ready for courier pickup and delivery

  • Placed order last week so will be arriving in the next few days. However, I've changed my mind. If anyone wants the Twilight version in Medium let me know. I paid a total of $54 + $14.95 for S&H. Cheers

  • +1

After a week, I got a refund without any explanation and I'm not pleased.

  • Just got my jacket this morning, pretty happy with it for the price. BUT still waiting on the vest :(
