HP Slatebook X2 64GB - $199 - Pickup @ OnlineComputer (Sydney)

320

I was in the market for a new Android tablet and came across this deal for a HP Slatebook X2 with 64GB of internal storage. Seems pretty decent for a sub-$200 tablet.
I could not find this info in their website, but they were handing out brochure in the street with the special price.
I picked up in store yesterday and they had few more in stock. Someone might find this useful.

Yep its a great device. Got mine in that previous deal.

    • Have you had Android updates, or still on 4.2?

      • +1

Not sure if they are shipping with 4.3 or it is OTA. I can't remember which way it was when I bought mine, AFAIK you can't root this on 4.3 even with the cable from HP.

        • I rooted mine on 4.2, haven't updated it to 4.3 haven't found the need to.

        • @stumo: I got it wrong, you can root on 4.3 but only with the cable. I wish I had not updated to 4.3, usually I check to make sure it won't limit features/hackability, not this time…

  • Seems a decent price for a brand name 10" tablet with better than full HD resolution. Many cheap tablets have poor screen res.

  • wow nice i bought my nexus 7 for this price. zomgwtfbbq

  • +1

1 x microSD memory card reader (up to 32GB)

My SlateBook X2 (purchased via the Domayne deal) appears to be able to read/write a 64GB MicroSD.

    • +1

I am running a 64gb SD in mine with no issues.

      • +2

        I've used 128gb in mine

  • +2

Does it come with the keyboard as well? if it does, thats a steal!

    • +2

Yeah, it comes with a detachable keyboard (also gives battery life when attached, as it has battery component in it too).

  • +1

Great little device with sh!t support from HP, the x2 is so capable with a nice screen, tegra 4 GPU and a great battery life, but HP just wants to let this thing die.

There is a 4.3 update, but anything beyond that is doubtful. Also you can't root it on 4.2 without a special cable that hasn't been in stock for years. If you upgrade to 4.3 you can't root it at all

I am so angry that the one tablet that makes me put down my iPad, has been put out to pasture. I hope one day someone at HP will give this thing the update it so badly needs.

    • +1

HP has a track record of killing its tablets. HP touchpad was one of them.

      • Was there any other?

        • Not exactly a tablet but the slate book 14 comes to mind

    • +1

really we need that special cable? then how some people from previous deal able to root? i found this but havent read
      http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/rom-maya…

      • +3

Actually you can root 4.3, but you will need the cable, 4.2 you do not require the cable from what I have read. Which is all well and as long as you don't update OTA to 4.3, provide they aren't shipped with 4.3.

        • +2

no third party cheapo cable from china on ebays, dx, gearbest, banggood etc?

        • +2

@erwinsie: Not that I am aware of, though I haven't looked. Let me know if you track down anything.

        • +1

          @erwinsie:

No, it's a proprietary HP cable.

        • +3

@duskybay: I have found a work around to root it for those who have updated to 4.3

I can post it if anyone is interested

        • +1

@ownage input: KingRoot v4.1? There are reports here that KingRoot v4.1 will root the Slatebook no matter whether ot not stock updates have been taken.

Personally, I just bought the Slatebook and have not updated it yet so will go with the more widely reported TowelRoot v1 method.

        • @PBG: Correct, I used KingRoot to gain root access. Then I installed flashify to load TWRP and flashed MAYAMOD 2.0

    • you can root it without cable if you haven't upgrade.

    • +1

I got one and rooted mine using towel root without the special cable. If you have updated to latest version of 4.3 then you are out of luck, and can only root with the cable. Even on 4.3 (dec 2013 version, and I only mention this because it probably ships on this version) you can root via towel root method, as long as it's not the very latest version (aug 2014). Root and install mayamod and this thing flies. Won't find anything near this new for $200.

Edit: why do people plus people that provide misinformation?

    • +2

Also you can't root it on 4.2 without a special cable that hasn't been in stock for years.

The cable is currently available from HP, but at an incredible price of A$108.78 (including GST and shipping - search for part number 728141-001 on the HP Parts Store).

      • +1

i was googling and found actually it was sold at AUD50 at the beginning then increase to AUD70 later and now increase again?
        amazing.

  • This thing is rubbish had one from bing lee.crap screen crap battery and hp don't give give you support still on jelly bean the screen has a awful yellow tinge through it quite quick tegra 4 that's about it my two cents worth the chuwis have a better screen more accurate colours

    • +2

The 4.3 update fixed the screen, as for the battery life mine is great.

  • just saw the youtube review. so how we can charge just the tablet if we are on vacation without the dock?

    • +3

Tablet has the charge port on it as well

      • Ok. I understand it's not micro USB port but the hp cable to charge, does it has normal usb at the other end so I can charge the tablet using iPad charger for example?

        • +1

          No. Its mains only.

        • -1

@stumo: i see. hmm wonder if in the future someone can hack, cut the cable and reconnect to usb ended cable. but maybe apple charger is too slow to charge this.

        • @erwinsie:
The mains brick says 15V DC output. So I'm guessing to reverse engineer the the proper USB cable, someone would actually need to tear apart their proper USB cable, since the charge cable uses 15V.

  • I also got one from previous deal. Got rid of it since it is far too bulky and battery life is poor - also pretty low capacity battery/s. Keyboard was well integrated but thats the only positive I have.I did manage to root mine with a simple software patch from memory since I did not install the ota update.

    • +1

What do you define as poor battery life?

      • HP claims you should be able to get 12 hours from both combined and around 6 hours just from the tablet.

Running a video on loop with the brightness on 50% and the Balanced Power battery setting disabled, the tablet manages just under the six-hour mark. That is still considerably less than the Nexus 10 and the Transformer Pad TF701T (12 hours) minus the dock.

Things, surprisingly, don’t really improve when you snap in the keyboard dock. The battery drains quickly and only really adds a couple of extra hours of battery life. An eight-hour battery life sounds good for a laptop and manages around the same as the Surface Pro 2, but when you compare it to the potential 17 hours you can get with the Transformer Pad Tf701T and standalone tablets like the iPad Air, it's not that impressive given the extra weight the combination adds.

        Read more at http://www.trustedreviews.com/hp-slatebook-x2-review-battery…

My ASUS 10" FHD memopad tablet can manage 8 hours (no keyboard dock support).

        • +1

Hmm not to sure about that, we'll not in my experience at least, I managed to watch the Lord of the rings trilogy outputting through the hdmi out and still had 11% on the tablet and 3% on the dock.

        • @ownage input: was the screen on the whole time or was it outputting to the external only? Screen takes a large chunk of the power

        • @Jackson: The screen doesn't turn off while outputting, otherwise you would just get a blank screen.

      • +2

4-6 hours ost without keyboard. 10+ with keyboard attach.

      • +1

Actually, I would like to know this too please. Thanks!

      • +2

Well I had a hunt for step-by-step instructions, and while I haven't yet performed these yet, I think the below is the general gist. I used to jailbreak iOS a lot so am roughly familiar with the process but the terminology of Android throws me and I am yet to root, flash or do anything with an android device more advanced than turn on the kids' tablets.

Reiterating, I have not yet performed these steps on my newly purchased HP Slatebook X2 so do not take it for granted that my list of steps works or is otherwise complete

Over the next few days I will go through the steps and if there is something I've missed or written incorrectly I will try to update here. If someone more knowledgeable is reading this I would be grateful if you could correct me or confirm the steps are correct.

        a) start-up your tablet and make sure any OTA updates are not taken. Don't waste your time doing anything to the tablet because you're going to wipe over everything anyway
        b) follow the detailed instructions here to:

        1. root the tablet using TowelRoot v1 (or if you have already updated to the most recent 4.3 then you should be able to use KingRoot v4.1 to do the rooting part). 'Rooting' the tablet just gives you root access (i.e. administrator privileges)
        2. verify that the tablet is rooted correctly with Root Checker
        3. Then using the Rashr app you need to replace the stock android 'Recovery' (Recovery is the android terminology for BIOS) by flashing "TWRP v2.8.1.0" in it's place.

        c) then you reboot the device and you can get into the new TWRP Recovery (a.k.a BIOS) by holding the power button and volume down button together.
        d) once in Recovery (remember this is the TWRP recovery now, the stock android recovery is bye bye) then you will be given options to do different things, including backup and flash new ROMs ("flash new ROMs" is just like saying "install new Windows" - well, to a noob like me it is).
        e) follow the not-so-detailed instructions here to download the MayaMod v2.0 ROM and:

        1. perform a Nandroid backup (do this inside TWRP Recovery) - a Nandroid backup is a complete image copy of the entire Android stock ROM you currently have been provided by HP so if you stuff things up you can always revert to this backup and be exactly where you are right now. I understand the size of the backup image file is about 700MB so have enough space ready to deal with this.
        2. after a successful backup, then go ahead and flash the MayaMod v2.0 ROM (do this inside TWRP Recovery too).

        f) reboot and hopefully everything went smoothly.

        • +1

          Yeah basically this guys.

This what I did for my x2 on 4.3

1- Download MAYAMOD 2.0 ROM and TWRP 2.8.1.0
2- Copy them onto a SD card or USB
          3- Install KingRoot apk
4- Root with KingRoot, really easy one-click root program
          5- Install flashify
          6- Flash TWRP
7- Boot in to recovery and make NANdroid backup
8- Flash MAYAMOD 2.0 in TWRP
          9- finish

My first boot after flashing MAYAMOD hung for a while but I will load, if not turn it off and then back on again.

This worked flawlessly for me the first time

        • @ownage input: Sorry I can't go into more details with links but XDAdevelopers is blocked at work.

        • +1

          @ownage input:

I found time to have a go at this tonight so I did. I just want to add that as per ownage input's post, I also had to use Flashify to flash the new TWRP Recovery because Rashr did not work (tried it 5-6 times and it never flashed the Recovery at all). First time I used Flashify (from Google Store also) and it worked perfectly.

          @PBG:

          Glad it worked for you.

FYI, I just picked one up at 12 noon. Assistant said there were 5-10 left (not out in the open so he wasn't sure exactly how many). Before I went I called and put one on hold - they were happy to do this.

  • +1

I've got one. Its great value for the price. Don't update if you want to jailbreak.
Pretty powerful for a tablet, can even run half life 2.

Mine has this annoying bug where it goes flat over a few days. Probably need a software update.
Also it can be slow when browsing complex webpages (i.e. ebay) in desktop mode. But most tablets are like that.

    • +1

See above mate, I can confirm I have rooted without the HP cable on 4.3

  • I saw this last week but decided not to post considering it was like $3 cheaper than a deal the same model posted in January this year. 6 months and $3 cheaper (after P&H was added to the other deal)

  • Can anyone comment on the speakers of this thing? I need a 10" replacement for my old ASUS Transformer, and this seems to fit the bill in terms of $$$, but I'll need something with decent audio output.

  • Is it true the baterry flat quickly? Ie not good in holding charge

    • And does mayamod rom improve this battery drain issue?

  • Anyone buy one online and having it delivered?

I purchased one and there's no communication at all.

  • I bought one during last deal in Jan. It has given me so much pain. The first unit i got had a draining battery issue, with a full charge the battery will get to 3% overnight even with it shut down. Then got a replacement unit, which is even worse. The display flashes on and off and not usable at all. I am still in the process of getting HP to get me a refund. Such a pain to go through all this.
