I agree with your statement for the avid ozbargainer.
Heck the fact that I can't even remember the exact store that did the free store credit thing is testimony to that. I actually could have gotten one of the small things I tried to purchase (but failed) for free with that store credit but ended up not bothering to go through with all of it again.
However I'm sure there are many others that aren't as fanatical that it would probably work on, especially for a clothes store if they end up liking the clothes.
