How Often Do You Exercise Per Week OzBargain Community?

I am just curious as how often the Ozbargain Community exercises per week. I have played sport from a young age usually soccer and cricket each season where it involves 1-2 trainings per week and the game on the weekend. I have some friends that are personal trainers and one said to me the other day, " The best investment you can make is your health".

This quote got me thinking particularly about the Ozbargain community where you see mainly fast food deals ( pizza, delivery hero etc). This is my personal experience, but I am often willing to spend more money on food that I believe will be better for me. I just talk myself into saying, "well it is healthy for me…" Every time. For example, I love almond nuts, in particularly the dry roasted however they are extremely expensive, or a good piece of salmon.
I am genuinely interested in what you guys think.

Bonus questions:
1) Do you see buying/eating healthy an expensive task or as my friend says an investment in your health?
2) Are you more willing to buy items of higher value if they are an healthier option.

          I do too. I just have to be organised with the weekly shopping, and plan food for dinner and to take to work. Some people at work always buy their lunch and they get this $10 overpriced lunch. so expensive over time.

        As an ozbargainer, I'd have to go every day to get value from a gym membership, so that's not going to happen.

        So I'll just keep telling myself I don't need to spend money to motivate myself…. but I can't see it happening before it warms up :)

          @Scrooge McDuck: Im not that heavy, it's varies between 50-60kg, depend on the season/time. I tried to put on some weight but fail, i think because of my diet which is light on meat/sugary/dairy or just my DNA.

          Either way im happy with it.

          Try adding two protein and carbohydrate rich meals between your current ones. 30 g WPC + 30 g (Skim) Milk Powder shaken in 250 mL water will do that for you if you struggle fitting the food in.

          Eh the thing is too much milks, cheese products and beef don't sit too well in my tummy. However, butter is fine, so when i have it, i use full cream stuffs.

          Personally, i don't believe in protein/milk shake products are good for me. It's all good.

          As Apostle Paul said : I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

          Furthermore, it's only the flesh/appearance/material I gain in putting on weight … The more one eats the more exercisers one must do, if one drop out of that cycle, things will starts crumble or wrinkled. Also the time that i have to put into "it" is too much ( as you can see from @Dreww22 effort down there :D ), i rather to spend that time with people whom i love and strength my Faith.

          Being grown up in the East, i don't believe in the Western's way of gaining weight/body building is good for me. That's all I think of for now. Thank you for your concern though, have a great day.

    I run about 60-70km a week. Mixture of long distance and speed work.

    Swim twice a week.

    Cycle about 200-300km a week.

  • Usually once a week, sometimes twice. I try to do lots of incidental walking throughout the week, though. Recovering from an injury and waiting for surgery, so can't do too much.

  • moderate exercise is good (anti-inflammatory). excessive exercise can be bad (pro-inflammatory).

    as for food, you can't go wrong eating quality, nutrient-dense unprocessed foods.

    My Mi Band says, I have been slacking off. I've been having "A Chill Day", apparently. When my electronic devices also tell me that I've been having it easy, it really does make me feel bad.

  • Exercise is good for your health, just walking doesn't cut it. i was walking and hour a day to for 18 months joined the gym and have lost 2 pants sizes in 6 months i need less sleep and have more energy.

    Ozbarginers will say don't waste your money on a gym membership buy it cheap off ebay or gumtree most people never use gym equipment at home.

    The local gym is $10 pw. That covers everything from yoga, weights, zumba etc. Pay in advance $500 pa so more likely to go. Now, I am much fitter, stronger and the aches and pains are down by about 95%. I have met really nice people there and we go for coffee when we feel like it. I feel sorry for my mates sitting around wingeing that they are too whatever to get off their bottoms, becoming fed up and fatter.

    I was a very inactive kid, but now run 50-100km per week. You can teach an old dog……

    In terms of bargains, I've gone from using every expensive product on the market to very simple and cheap solutions.

    I ran for just under 5.5 hours yesterday and had water and a couple of dirt cheap Coles muesli bars. Finished with a 2x protein Up & Go. Yes, they were on special.

      5.5 hours of running in a day, that sounds a bit extreme to me. What sort of impact would this have on your knees/ankle in the long term?

        I'm training for 3 races this year which are all 100 miles or longer, so I need to be out there for a long time. The races can take up to 45 hours.
        In the last few years I've been hanging around people who do this stuff all the time and basically none of them have knee problems.
        I'm not saying no one gets injured, but it's fairly common for people to get PF, ITB, hamstring, back issues etc. but on the whole, ultra marathoners seem to get less of the major injuries because we don't run as fast……and it's very social because it takes so long!

        Hi MTG, not sure if this was about my post or not, but I'll address it anyway!

        Your body can handle a lot more than you think- during a 100km race I once had 20 gels- that's enough sugar to make anyone sick (including me!). ultra runners tend to look for calorie dense foods- peanut butter, fruit cake, etc. Bottom line you're in much more danger of becoming diabetic if you don't exercise than if you do and have sugary things.

        But there has been a lot of news items around about people going low carb for long events. Only some people are able to do this- it requires you to train your body to burn fat a bit better. This is a difficult thing to do, i'm trying at the moment and it hurts a lot.

        The theory goes like this- you can only absorb about 100 calories an hour during exercise, but you burn 300 calories per hour. If you train your body to be more efficient at burning fat, it will be easier to run once you're deep into the fat burning phase. All I can say is it seems to be easier for small people, and sucks to be me.

    • Kaos, I would be very aware of the nutritional info in the Up & Go. Extremely high in sugar. And it isn't normal milk lactose either.
      Go for a lower sugar protein shake and you're good to go.

      I used to grab a bunch of those protein up and go's on special, but stopped after I realised how much crap was in them.

    I train in martial arts every day and I also practice yoga three days a week.
    I do not eat any processed meat, fast food or high sugar foods.
    I also meditate for 20 mins every morning.
    My vital signs are consistent with someone 20-25 years younger than my chronological age.

        Some is included with my gym membership. I also go to master classes which are $30 for 2 hours.
        Regular lessons at a studio are about $12-18.

  • It's both, but at the current fad prices I reckon it's more expensive than an investment.
    And yes, I'm willing to buy stuff of higher value. But I'm not willing to pay the prices currently being asked.

  • I train about 6 times with with each day averaging about 2 hours.

    Doing PPL and cycling through it twice a week. Really enjoying it during the winter months as I got to eat more. But with summer around the starting my slow cut now.

    I've got a pretty mean right-click that I've been training, and my F9 and alt-tabbing reflexes are second to none. I paid for exercise once a week a while back but I dropped out of that phase after about 3/4 of a year.

    I also happen to be allergic to quite a few healthy foods unless they've been cooked to oblivion :c. I've been trying to pay more attention (along with more money) towards a healthier diet because I believe my current inexpensive diet probably causes me to be under-nutritioned.

    Every time I do try to correct my lifestyle in order to better my health, I actually find I quite enjoy the exercising and healthy eating once I get into it.. but I always feel bad about the increased costs after a few good months, which causes me to start "procrastinating" and eventually stop altogether.

    I've been planning to start trying to be healthy again real soon.

      One can develop a substantial exercise regime with only bodyweight and the furniture you have around your home. A bicycle and access to a decent (children's) playground are bonuses.

        Bedroom pilates was something I enjoyed until sale items slowly ate into almost all of my living space.

        I suspect mainly iron. Probably not so bad now as I've started eating at least one "proper" meal a day. I bought a variety of supplements a while back and try to take them with meals when I remember but I've heard absorption is nowhere as good as with real foods.

        For nearly a full year I tried a couple different (silly) meal "variations" to minimize cost, effort, time and refrigeration. I managed to replace the majority of my meals with 70c "meals". I've since been trying to re-prioritize my health.

          Pilates is indeed a great workout, it's one of the many classes you can go to a few times (read: free trial), memorise and incorporate into your own regimen.

          Get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity. You also can do a combination of moderate and vigorous activity.

  • Daily during the week, but I have an office job and if I don't I balloon.

    It severely depends on your daily job.

    Have an office job, and train for ironman/marathons.

    Running a marathon in 2 months so at the moment:

    -Swimming pool 2x a week
    -Gym 3x a week (20 min on the treadmill + weights)
    -Saturday = long distance run (25km-40km depending on weather/schedule).

    Sunday is rest day.

    When the marathon is over Saturday will be cycle day, and summer is coming on so the Gym will be replaced with running outdoors.

    Eating healthy is not difficult to do on the cheap, although I do splurge on some stuff (free range eggs and steaks being one) Usual diet:

    • Breakfast: Quick oats + half milk, half water + 1 scoop protein. Microwave in protein shaker and consume on drive to work. Maybe ~$1.50-$2
    • Lunch: Either half a chicken + steam vege pack in the microwave (~$6), or Carrot + 2 pieces fruit (banana & apple usually) + 2x yogarts (~$4-$5).
    • Dinner: Steak + 2 eggs + frozen vege mix (~$6-8 depending on steak).

    Weekend meals vary.

    Other upfront cost was my bike and ironman gear (~$1600). Yearly Im looking at signup for each event (2-3 a year @ ~$400 each) + flights/hotel/booze. Running shoes every 6-8 months = $50 via eastbay. Swimming pool cost: $8/week, gym cost: $20/fortnight (gym is winter only).

    Staying fit is cool fun though. Helps with work stress, tension etc.. 5 years ago my friends would introduce me as their geeky/nerdy friend. Now they introduce me as their athletic friend. I never thought I would get that.

        So at the moment:

        Pool: 2x 40min/week
        Gym: 3x 50min/week
        Saturday Run: 1.5 - 3 hours

        So around 5-6 hours a week. Some weeks I will miss a day or so. If I miss days exercising I eat less.

        I work 8am-4pm, so exercise after work means my day goes from 8am-5pm, which is quite handy.

      • I noticed the limited carbs too. I mean true fruit has carbs but I would rather eat bread than fruit.
        They may be different though.

        At my 'fighting' weight - aka skinny jeans diet, I only eat carbs at breakfast so I understand their diet.

      • Generally yes, that plus maybe a few snacks.

        Breakfast: There are a lot of oats. Fills up a protein shaker, quite a few carbs. The protein powder scoop also has carbs.
        Lunch: I agree the half chick + steamed veges is low carb. The carrot+2xfruit+yogurt is a big meal though.
        Dinner: A 1KG bag of frozen vege mix lasts me about 2.5-3 meals. It is a lot of frozen veges, a whole plate full. I try to keep the steak at around 200g.

        Other than that I do also eat 3x cookies and tea during a day in the office, and booze in the weekends. Whenever I go out I do consume more. (e.g. Candy at the movies, had Grilled on a date last night). If I need an energy hit I sometimes take a no-doze tab, maybe a V energy drink.

        I'm 93kg/6ft4. Wouldn't mind loosing a few kilos to get to ~88kg. I don't limit my diet though. I eat what I do because I am hungry and that keeps me full during the day.

    As someone else pointed out… min 3 max 4 days (or rather nights) a week. Strength training mostly, about 45mins - 1hr workouts… been great for losing body fat, but still have a gut though >.>

    too much! im doing Kayla Itsines 12 week bbg. I'm on week 11. i do circuit training at 6am 3 x a week, 1 to 2 sessions of HITT, LISS by power walking 1hr each day minimum and on tuesday i do a double gym class of yoga and sh'bam.

    I exercise everyday. The circuit training is really hard so if i cant complete it in time i'll do it when i get home from work.

    if you want to look good and keep fit you have to put in the effort. last week i did 87,000 steps on fit bit.

    Whenever we are out I always get my hubby to drop me off a few kms before home so i can walk. I try to walk every to increase me steps count. My fitbit friends are extremely competitive but I'm the worst.

    last weekend we went to the range and did a 3km hike/bushwalk. i have sedentary desk job so i have to make up my step count after work. i also park far from work to force myself to walk.

    however, i love good food so i have heaps of cheat meals and eat out a lot. i love my carbs, ticd and noodles too. no point to life if i cant enjoy good food. but i try to eat healthy 80% of the time.

      I don't want to spend 1 hour a day explicitly exercising and constantly setting aside time to walk here and there but rather just carefully manage my diet and exercise 3-4 times per week and walk out of enjoyment.

      Time restrictions can demand people use cars.

        cheat meals is also a source of inspiration. with kayla itsines, you are allowed cheat meals. i log all my food consumption myfitnesspal. anyway, the program works.. kayla's amazing. 12 weeks this week.. my first bbg 1.0 finished. will be rewarding myself for sure!

          I know her program. It's very popular and seems successful. Around 1600 calories/day she says.

          I have cheat meals and chocolate/ice cream twice a week when maintaining but otherwise stick to 1200 and exercise 3-4 times/wk.

          It's what works for you as long as you enjoy life, are healthy etc.
          I tried the lots of exercise and food thing but was constantly eating or cooking and food wasn't pleasurable anymore. I was just stuffing it in.
          Contrastingly, my very controlled/careful food intake wouldn't work for you.

    I have a home gym and workout four days a week after work. The hardest part is the ridiculous amount of food I have to eat to put on bulk.

    I usually eat oats or eggs in the morning, pasta and fruit for lunch, and meat + veg + pasta or a stir fry for dinner, with yoghurt and protein shake before bed.
