Best price according to Camelcamelcamel and Amazon #1 in Portable Studio Recorders. In case you don't know this a really great quality audio recorder. I have one and use it as a back up to my video camera shotgun mic in case I leave the battery switched off or it goes flat. I keep this just out of view and it does a great job. I also use it to record audio only. Would be a great budget way to record podcasts in high quality. Lovely, just lovely.

I just noticed it dropped in the last few hours. Get in quick if you love a bargain and need a great quality audio recorder. I posted a deal on these with amazon a year or two ago and they sold out pretty quick once we OzBargained it!

Battery powered 2 x AA (did anyone say eneloop)
Built-in omni-directional microphones
Stereo mic/line input with plug-in power to connect external source or microphone
Variable speed playback (50%-200%) without changing pitch, Loop and repeat

Purchased - cheers. Was considering getting something like this for field recording and whatever else, so this is perfect.

    • Yeah I'm amazed as to how handy it can be both as primary and backup in the field.

    "Save $110"

I bought one of these from a Melbourne eBay store for $119 delivered about 6 months ago. This one on Amazon appears to be the old model or version one. Version two still goes for $140+

Hey just saying what Amazon says.
      My usual Melbourne stores:
      Storedj - $172
      DJcity - n/a
      soundcorp n/a

      V2 DJcity $189

How come I don't see an OzB post for these from you about 6 months ago?

      • How come I don't see an OzB post for these from you about 6 months ago?

because that was the normal price for v1………………..

Really never seen one that price in Melb, looking around now can't find a v1 or v2 near it. On ebay cheapest in Melb is $148, $169, $175, then $199. Although the last 3 are the V2 which is the same with a firmware uograde.

Good news though you can upgrade your v1 to v2 as shown below. Sorry to seem defensive, I felt your "Save $110" was having a go at the value of this deal. Yours was a good deal, and this is a good deal. Both at the same price, except this is available now.

        • @ShipShapeRC:

I normally buy from DWI but it was $10 cheaper at the time on eBay so I got it from there - still cheapish on DWI www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/astore/Tascam-DR-05-Portable-Ha…

    • There are a few Tascam models selling over USD $140 at B&H
But this model is USD$69.99 too.

  • Thanks ShipShapeRC!

    • I'm pleased I could help.

Montebello, CA (July 15, 2014): TASCAM has updated the DR-05 to Version 2. This free software update adds a list of flexible recording features to the best-selling portable recorder.

    Hi Thanks OP For posting.

For the guy posting above regarding Version 2. I believe you'll find Version 2 is just a firmwire update which is free on on TASCAM's website:

    http://tascam.com/product/dr-05/downloads/
    http://tascam.com/content/downloads/products/558/e_dr-05_rn_…

Please let me know if I am wrong, as I'm also interesting in purchasing after seeing the reviews.

    FYI After a USD-AU Conversion it's roughly $109.

Thanks for doing the follow up. It's great news. I'll have a look at what's in the update. As it is, it's been perfect for me though.

  • far out, i could have made good use of this recently, had an event to go to that i used my phone to record. Would have happily paid the dollars for a better quality recording

  • Not much into videos.. but are these better than the on-camera shotgun or xy mics?

    • It depends on your setting. I use both and then I am fine. Shotgun on the camera, Tascam as close in as I can get it. I would say much safer than a shotgun on it's own. One time on a borrowed camera I plugged my shotgun into the headphones rather than the mic socket, so the audio was all shot on in stock mic - yukko. This backup was worth it weight in gold. Saved the $$ and time re-shooting.

      • Oh I should say I have also used my shotgun on this tascam to record highly direction audio. Worked nice.

  • Not that much of a deal when considering

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BRAND-NEW-TASCAM-DR-05-VERSION-2-…

So after conversion, you save only about $24.

    • Well its just a firmware update difference, hardware is identical. So yeah I would save the $24 thanks.
