  • NewsgroupDirect Terabyte Tuesday

    I thought its Wednesday today.

    • :) That's what they call it. It started around 20 hours ago. I got an email early this morning about it.

      • US time?

        • AEST

  • these guys are good. managed to get on their unlimited $65 a year plan and havent looked elsewhere since

    • Any issues with missing blocks? Have been with Astraweb for 3 years and the last 6 months has been getting lots of missing blocks so I am considering switching.

      • +2

You should always have two accounts. A main one and a backup block account. I have NGD as my main as it’s the cheapest, and Astra as backup.
My split is NGD 89% Astra 11%. Most of my content is grabbed immediately upon release, I suspect Astra is only kicked in on older articles, but I never bother to look into it too much.

I still get missing blocks on older items. I had that last night when trying to get some 900 odd day old items.

        • I see, thank you. The stuff I find with missing blocks are new items with Astraweb. Will get in on this deal. Thank you.

      • im with astraweb too and have been getting the same problems recently, when i looked into it i found it wasnt astraweb it was my file sources
i get lotsa stuff from gingerdaddy[nzb] and many files error, i downloaded the same nzb from binsearch and zero errors on astraweb
simply by changing where i got my nzb from resolved this problem
astraweb at least for me, isnt the problem

        • It hasn't been the same since nzbmatrix got taken down :( thumbs down for nzbgeek then I will try a few other indexers.

  • Thinking of trying this out, but torrents still seem to do the trick for me. What's the main advantage of Usenet? Privacy I guess?

    • +1

Well for starters torrents mean you are distributing copyrighted material and can be easily liable for a million dollars.

In a draft letter from the copyright company for Dallas Buyers Club specifically mentioned uploading is the reason they are going after people in Australia.

Usenet does not upload and technically if they were going to take you to court they could only ask for $30, the cost of the bluray instead of $200,000 for example.

Also usenet is much faster then torrents, I max out my 100mbit connection.

    • Faster (d/ling off a server)
More reliable, especially for extremely new or rare stuff that you would get no seeds on torrent.
      Secure (use SSL)

Down side being u will sometimes get broken downloads…

      • Thanks guys, I think I will give it a go. Is there a good starters guide somewhere?

    • torrents get their releases from newsgroups,
newsgroups you are simply downloading from a server which you have an account with
with torrents every person who connects and uploads from you is a seperate copyright charge
newgroups have ssl layered protection, which means it al most impossible to know what films etc they are downloading to your pc
newsgroups will even max out the latest internet connections all day every day
      much much faster than torrents
there isnt a single reason i could think of that would make torrents a better service than newsgroups
except cost, i pay 20 dollars a quarter with astraweb newsgroups access, i paid 10 dollars for the newzbinpro, program which is a newsgroup download manager and i paid ten bucks lifetime membership to an nzb hosting site
you will never ever go back to torrents once youve tasted newsgroups

      • Thanks odgaf, great info. Didn't realise there was other costs like the nzb hosting site and newzbinpro program. Are they a must have or are there free options. I just want to try newsgoups with minimal cost at first to see if I like it….

  • Can you pretty much get anything from Usenet groups? I'm mainly after NBA games and some tv. Thanks.

    • Google nzb indexer, sign up for one of the free ones and check what's available. TV definitely yes. NBA some.

    • Problems are:

      1. A lot of things get DMCA-ed within 1 day of being uploaded eg Throne of Games episodes, Ubisoft games.

      2. To prevent this, a lot of posts are made with nonsensical header and file name which cannot be found using an NZB search engine or manually downloading headers.

If it weren't for these problems, Usenet would be great. Faster downloads, no need to seed, and your IP remains hidden from scumbags like Dallas Buyers Club LLC/Voltage Pictures. It is also easy to share on Usenet using programs like Power Post.

There are several ways to stop or at least reduce problem one. Auto programs such as CouchPotato & Sickbeard etc… Or if you can get access to Dog.nzb, then using their Watchlist and Custom Search RSS features which are all I rely on at the moment.

I would hardly call owners of intellectual property scumbags for trying to ensure they get a proper return on their investment. Persoanlly I applaud them for the way they have gone after people and more so the reasonable amount they have asked for. They have been very fair.

        • This particular organisation is planning to ask individuals how much they earn and then based on that information determine how much they are going to sue them for. Just sayin.

  • I would like to begin my transition away from torrents.

Is there a time limit to use this 1TB up?

Nevermind : Just read it properly and its no expiration date.

Keeping in mind 11 months ago Newsgroupdirect had a data breach that involved full credit card details being leaked, forcing customers to cancel their cards.

    • +1

True. I'm one of the victims, nearly $1000 was skimmed from my 28degree, had to cancelled my card. Half of the amount had already went through when I closed my account, so have to paid it off, got refunded at the end. A lot of hassle, and all I got just generic apology letter from newsgroupdirect.

      • That's why I use a non-reloadable card from post office.

        • Yeah because I love leaving a little bit extra on the card and paying fees to boot.

        • That's so noob for being ozbargainer. No reason to leave money on the card, why not use it all up. The fee is cheap insurance compared to what happened above.

  • Since I found out IINet users get access to free Usenet binaries (if you can't find how on whirlpool PM me) I just get block accounts for my backup.

    • Every ISP has free access to a news server, their retention is shit though.

  • Looks like I will need to top up soon

You have used 3921.1 GB of the 4400 GB allowed.

    • You must have a crapload of hard drives to store all that? Over what time frame have you downloaded the 4000 GB ?

      • Dec 2013 is when I got my first 2TB block from them.
I delete 90% of stuff once watched, so it's not too bad.

        Hmm, apparently 2.26TB of stuff.
