Doptrix for iPhone/iPad FREE, Save $1

980

In two days my Apple developer license will expire, so this is the last chance for iPhone and iPad users to grab this great game. I'm giving it away for free to celebrate this memorable occasion.

Apple charges aussie developers $149 this year, that's $50 more than last year and about $25 more than it costs in US.
Being an ozbargainer I refuse to pay more.
For $150 I'd rather buy myself something nice and useful, like a 4TB expansion drive from this deal.

Enjoy!

Edit: Looks like there is a way to keep my game in the App Store without paying Apple the annual fee.
A friend of mine offered to transfer it to his account. Thank you all for all the support!

  • So you didn't make $150 in sales last year?

    • +18

I did make about $150-170, but sales have been really poor lately.
I'm selling 3-5 copies of the game per month now.
Even Google Play is performing better. And it doesn't charge annual fee.

      • I wonder how much of an impact the ability to pay with Telstra credit is having on sales in the Google Play store…

Hey mate and other Apple developers, is there a way we could share costs and use a single about to have all the apps listed?

I have an app in iTunes too but is really not worth it to renew next year.

Contact me if there are other developers who want to keep their apps online.

Op if you want to host your app and leave it available we can work something out mutually,
        Thanks,

  • Can attest, this is a great game. Grabbed it waaay back the first time you gave it away.

    • Thanks! :)

Me too. My developer license ends today too.

At least Apple has announced you will still be able to develop for your OWN devices for free now, meaning it's just not worth it to renew ( I only made a couple of toy apps for myself ).

Note that you are actually getting more for your $150 given they are rolling in the Mac Developer subscription but really who cares there.

My recommendation: help start a new wave of open source apps for iOS now that we can all start compiling them for ourselves on our OWN devices for free. (Alternatively I'd put your next app idea onto crowd funding and get the users to stump up the $150 first.)

    Thanks for the game.

    • Thanks! I don't think I will be developing anything new soon, Doptrix was a one-off inspiration.

Do I understand correctly that my app will disappear from the App Store when the developer license expires? Do you know if it will remain visible in the Game Center?

  • So what happens to the game on the AppStore once you stop paying the $149/year? Is it still listed? Can people still download it?

    • I believe it will disappear from the AppStore. People who already own the game should still be able to play it.

    • Thanks for the reply.

    • What I think happens is users cant search for the game anymore, however you can scroll through your list of purchased apps and still download it that way as far as Im aware.

Still think it's worth it as they're rolling in Mac distribution too (honestly, they should've been combined in the first place). Heck, I know people who sign up just to get access to the beta OS releases.

OK, but why should you guys pay Apple in the first place?

Isn't it Apple that benefits from your game selling on their store in the first place? Don't they get 30% commission anyway? How is it smart for Apple to charge anything for keeping a game that it will make money off in it's store?

Is it the "vetting" they want to cover? Suck it up Apple.

I just don't get anyone justifying paying a supplier if that said supplier already takes money from me every time I sell something.

Same way I don't get Credit Card annual fees when VISA already takes up to 2% of every transaction.

  • As a upcoming developer, my question: Is Android Worth it for paid apps? I mean, data suggest otherwise for In app purchases in Android. Can you tell how much you make from the Google play Store on this game?
    Thanks :)

I suck at marketing, that's why my game was never successful in financial terms.
Free version of Doptrix has around 80.000 installs on Google Play.
And only about 1 in 70 users pays for the full version.

  • Downloaded. Thanks mate - appreciate your hard work. Don't appreciate Apple stiffing our developers.

Awesome game, too bad I don't own an iDevice.

Appreciate you giving Apple the drop and using Android instead. Keep on developing.

  • I don't play games but I'm fascinated on how you create an app.

Props to you, my programming skills doesn't exceed excel what if's! People see Angry Birds and then aspire to make billions like them!

How long does it take to develop an app?

    Good luck in the future!

    • I'm not a professional developer myself. This was my one and only project of such kind.
Took me about 5 months to create Android version and another month to port it to iOS.

Just bought game now on Google play. Worth the cost of admission. Well done. I love puzzle games by the way.. Anything else planned..

  • Well.. seems that I already owned it, so must have either purchased or obtained from previous deal. Must be installed on my old personal iPhone 4, but have just installed on my work iPhone to celebrate.

    Cheers and thanks.

  • I don't have an idevice but upvote for your kindness!

  • Thanks for the insight into iOS dev.
    Just grabbed it, thanks.

  • Looks like there is a way to keep my game in the App Store without paying Apple $149.
A friend of mine offered to transfer it to his account. I had no idea this is possible, but apparently it's an easy procedure.
The game will remain free for at least a few more days until the transfer is over.
