the 4tb so tempting, rip out from case and become internal for NAS

    • +1

cheaper than buying from amazon at this price point

      • +1

but my8TB NAS only up to 67% capacity, i think no need to keep spare as price will always go down

        • +3

          price will always go down

except they havnt for the last couple of years… in fact this is still more expensive than the $139 locally i paid for my last 4tb's well over a year ago

@nosdan: thailand flood affect still going till now? plus dollar weaken

@erwinsie: call me clinical.. but i think thats just the excuse they are using to price fix to keep profits much higher than the previous pricing model.

Paid $189 for 4TB WD Green at MSY in April 2014. Exact same price there today. Even more depressing: in June 2011, $88 would buy you a 2TB WD Green from MSY. Four years later, it won't even buy you the 2TB (current price $99).

        • @Jabba the Hutt: yeah i just realised i got one 4tb seagate from ozb here probably last year to0 $170.
drive is on my NAS and i got bonus usb3 enclosure

        • Not if Aussie dollar keeps dropping…

@mooney: wow… that was a pretty bad typo…. in my defense that was pre coffee…. its lucky it made even the slightest sense at all really

    • Me too, thinking of ripping out the drive and using it a new NVR to record IP camera output. Cheapest 4TB from MSY is around $187.

Is it easy to rip it out from the case?

      • +3

Is it easy to rip it out from the case?

yes, plenty of info on the googles

      • Is the HDD inside 7.2k?

        • Most likely their commonly available 5900RPM model although sometimes they do use the higher end models depending on what they have on hand.

        • @silent1: Hmm. That is interesting. I would go only for 7.2k and will pass.

    • That's a bad idea the Seagate drives have aggressive head-parking, honestly for a few more dollars you can get a proper NAS drive with decent warranty that will last longer. I have had two seagate drives which have both failed within a year and a half from corruption by taking them out of Enclosures. I always thought people were fear-mongering or being pedantic about this, but seriously they aren't designed for the constant operations of a NAS. Simply not worth it…

      • I've taken 14 out of enclosures and had a few die due to aggressive head-parking. I solved more from dying by using hdparm on every boot to adjust sleep time and/or advanced power management depending on the firmware revision. This cannot be done behind a proper hardware raid controller.

The NAS drives use the same hardware. Its the firmware and warranty that's different. Depending on how many you purchase, is $70 more per drive worth it?

  • Any review on the 4tb Seagate HD? I was waiting for a WD deal…

    • I have a 4TB seagate expansion and it doesnt work too well on my ASUS PBH77-M motherboard running windows 8.1, it keeps disconnecting itself though a friends 2TB version works fine.

The 4TB works if i boot into windows 7 and on other windows 7 boxes, ill find out by August (hopefully) if it works in Win10.

I prefer the WD drives to the seagate, but apart from the above they seem ok.

  • It appears the codes are expired now

    • Any exclusions? I tried to buy Norton 360, but received this message: Coupon code "THURS15" is not valid.

        • @solartommy: I haven't used Norton in years and I just got an 850 Evo SSD so everything's too blazingly fast to notice

Hi EC. Coupon not valid for the 1TB Seagate HDD…

    http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/27551/31334/capture.jpg

Your sample option for the 4TB Seagate doesn't work either as there's a limit of 11 packs of batteries (but you can use other stuff to get it to $200 and apply the coupon THURS45 successfully on the 4TB. Nice post, thanks :)

easternculture was only making a suggested split to get to 200, add whatever you need to get you there. The 11 limit is a factor of Dick Smith. I simply order 11 AAA and 5 AA all good!

      • +1

        Totally agree.

  • Been waiting for a decent deal for a 4tb for ages.. I've never had much luck with Seagate though.
