      How much do you weigh?

      • He weighs over 130 kgs, so the chair won't hold his weight

        • -1

From personal experience when you reach those sorts of weights you won't find anything cheap that will safely hold your weight. It's an additional burden if you are tall. The last few inches of the sitting process are in free-fall causing everything from sofas to office chairs to receive weight + force. I'm using a 20 year old steel frame dining chair as an office chair as chairs rated up to 250kg still break eventually.

I am 75KG and sitting with these chairs just fine. So I guess any weight below shall be fine :)

just wondering if you ozbargainers think this camera is good value? I am in the market for a digital slr for an overseas trip. If not, what would you recommend? budget around $500

    thanks in advance

    • Definitely not.

look for a compact camera with 12 or 15 times zoom. the problem with slr is they're big and bulky plus the lens in that kit is not suitable for travel.

    • I've seen it below $250 in the past so I definitely wouldn't be spending $499 on one.

Edit: $499 is actually the normal price for it at Harvey Norman of all places so I think that says a lot about how good of a deal that would be :D

Edit. $499 is also the standard price for it at Domayne.

$431.96 at Dick Smith, but still would not recommend it.

    • I just noticed that same camera/lens kit is $431 at Dick Smith online, today only.

Good value? Yes, I paid $6000 (yes, thousand) for my first Canon DSLR (in 2002).
This one is infinitely better at a tiny fraction of the price.

The problem with SLRs for travel is that you become 'that guy' lugging the
camera everywhere, and after a few days you get sick of it and leave it in the
hotel and miss shots. A good pocket-sized camera with a nice long OPTICAL zoom
will be nicer for travel. Leave the SLR at home for your 'creative' moments!

  • Thanks ozbargainers. great advice. will keep looking then. perhaps a point and shoot with a high optimal zoom?

    • +1

The advantage of compact (pocket sized) camera is that you can easily carry it and have it ready to quickly take a picture. I have missed so many pictures while traveling because it is too hard or slow to get my SLR camera out of the back pack. There are some advantages to SLRs, but even for a semi professional travel photographer, I am not sure that I would buy an SLR if I was going to buy SLR & lens again. These days modern compact cameras a very good in low light, indeed sometimes better than SLRs. Having a zoom of 10 to 15 times allows you to get much closer to the action than the camera in a smart phone.

      • Thanks bud. just what I needed to hear. just want something with good optical zoom and good in low light. any recommendations for one ?

        • The advice that works for me is…

If you're going somewhere specific where there will be photo opportunity, take a DSLR.
Otherwise, use a good quality smart phone (eg. Samsung Galaxy S6, Apple iPhone 6s, etc).

The problem with a point-n-shoot with a zoom is that the glass is usually poor quality, as are the sensors. I have never been as impressed with a point-n-shoot as a good DSLR or good smart phone.

If in doubt, read reviews, look at sample photos. DPreview.com is a good start, but it won't cover mobile phone cameras in the same detail as they do DSLRs. There are some good sites (eg. anandtech) that do good reviews of mobile phone cameras, eg.

    • I reckon something along the line of:

      http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/astore/Sony-Cybershot-DS…

will do you just fine, and still within your budget.

Not to say that's the best price but a good indication of what you can look for with that budget.

  • Not sure if I was just unlucky, but bought some AAA batteries, they lasted about a day in my salt and pepper shakers….

    • +13

Probably shouldn't be grinding them up then

    • -2

      Trying blending them.

    • Salt is highly corrosive, shouldn't put the batteries in the salt, but it would take more than a day for the salt to eat through the batteries though

    • +1

It is really annoying that disposable batteries don't have to state what their capacity (other than size) is.

I suspect they vary greatly, but it makes it impossible to make a value judgement.

    • I bought some solar powered AA chargers that come with 2 batteries for ~$4. I don't even have to use electricity to charge my batteries. Probably wont save much electricity

Batteries drain slowly over time, if the batch is old then it might be flat by the time you open a pack

    • You do realise that any Ozbargainer who admits to using anything other then Enloops which they got on sale, faces a lifetime ban???

    • Just to clarify, were they Chevron Alkaline batteries?

      • Yes

    • Not using Eneloops? You're doing it wrong.

  • thanks

I think the prices are effective today, went to the QV BigW and found $3 batteries all sold out already. Did someone beat OZBers to being cheap?

    • Staff?

    • Starts Thursday… Hopefully new stock…

  • Had a bad experience with BigW discounts. I saw an ad about LEGO Technic cargo plane discounted from $188 to $100. However, they are all out of stock (nation wide) when I checked. I called them just to know that they never do rainchecks. I checked again today and the item is no longer on their website.

  • +1

$3 chairs all gone in Merrylands, Fairfield, Wetherill Park, Bonnyrigg, Auburn, Liverpool.

    • I would check Thursday, they might be getting stock in for this catalogue

  • +4

Those flanny jackets will go fast in Frankston.

Some might even pay for them

  • About an hour ago at Top Ryde Big W they still had about 5 or 6 chairs (adult) and about 10-12 of the kids ones.
