Help Me Find a Pram for a Steal

We were blessed with a boy (our first one) this April. The bugger is getting heavier by the day (daddy's genes, yay ! ) and I am looking to buy either a pram/stroller/buggy etc.
Can someone please list the differences ?
The only places we'd want this convenience is at shopping centers and parks. Don't walk a lot but do so occasionally. Plans for another one pretty soon so one of those stroller things with an attachable seat for a toddler and another 'basket' for an infant seems to be appealing to me. I found this thread with some opinions https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/177152
Of course, as the title suggests, please help me find a bargain for this. A local shop in Darwin was doing some sales and the advertisements read Blah pram was 1600 now 1100. !! I think my budget be around 300 or so. Not interested in used items.

Cheers,

Of course, as the title suggests, please help me find a bargain for this. A local shop in Darwin was doing some sales and the advertisements read Blah pram was 1600 now 1100. !! I think my budget be around 300 or so.

I was going to say, a bargain is relative.

For example, this Baby Jogger City Select will handle everything you can throw at it. It will suit the boys until they're bigger, tackle grass as well as bitumen, and still offer great resale value 3-5yrs down the track. The 'bargain' aspect is that these go for over $1k locally!

That and the fact that we have a 3yo and 7mo, and were fortunate enough to be gifted one, and then bought a City Mini GT for when we need an easier pram in some situations.

With the City Select, we get countless comments from parents saying "oh I wish mine did that" or "I wish ours was so simple with the 2 seat design". Just the versatility of the double has proven itself time and time again :)

So, something to consider if you don't want to be upgrading in a year!

Edit and as to the basket - aka bassinet - sounds like your youngest might be too big, or getting that way for the bassinet kit for the City Select, so I dont know if I'd recommend it. That said, a lot of good baby shops stock the City Select, so you could do a trial fit with your son in the bassinet and see how he goes.

Oh, and as to the difference between Aus and US models, Aus models just need to have a red handbrake, that's it! It's not like car seats where there is a lot changed for local laws, its just a coloured handbrake lol

And that's another thing, the handbrake on the handle is so damn handy!

    • Here's an example of the ridiculous 2nd hand prices

$700 for the same pram I just linked you to, to purchase brand new for $700, delivered to your door lol

      • So what do you think about that City Select pram in the US ebay site ? I kinda like it and although I have cancelled all my US cards, I am willing to pay 700 for a new one if wifey likes it. How is the pram ? Having no experience in prams, I don't have parameters to compare one against the other :(

Sister in law bought one as well and love it. As I said, we were fortunate to have 1 bought for us, but we've used ours for over a 3 years and there's no issues whatsoever (touch wood!).
The seller has 100% feedback from 11700 buyers (which is pretty amazing imo!)
You wont have to pay GST or anything because it's under $1000.
It says the shipping is tracked.
          Reassurance of Paypal.

although I have cancelled all my US cards

Makes no difference because you're paying with Paypal :)

Trust me, the Mrs will be very happy! (But don't surprise her with the colour, let her pick! You know what they're like! For the record, mine chose purple lol but hey I've got 2 girls!)

look on gumtree, ebay, local facebook trading groups.
    second handies go cheaply.

    • thanks for replying. Updated the question. Missus is nosy bout it - absolutely - no used prams.

Yep, those of us who have been there know this situation too well!!
By the time you have your second child you will be wondering why you didn't start with second hand and pocket the cash.
Come back to this post in 3-4 years and you'll appreciate my suggestion a bit more

I am with you Battler. There are some pretty good second hand prams on the market. We decided to buy one when we had our second. Saved $700 off RRP.

    Cheap alternative to bugaboo

  • We have a Steelcraft Agile Plus….it is SH*T…don’t buy it. I thought I’ve done enough research beforehand, but somehow, I still got it wrong. Anyway, we bought it from belly2baby.com.au, they had the best price at the time (2 years ago)…so check out the prices there.

    • Can you please help me understand more why you didn't like the Agile Plus? Feature-wise it looks very good, and is well and truly the straightest stroller I can find under $500 (i.e. it doesn't feel like a shopping trolley!)

      • Ohh…where should I start…

        1. I often find the AgilePlus very hard to maneuver, especially doing turns (e.g. u-turn in the middle of the supermarket isle), the front wheels often don’t ‘swivel’ properly, the front wheels just drag on the ground side way (wheels not turning) as I turn the stroller.

        2. Very difficult to access the basket in the bottom. Very hard to squeeze my handbag/nappy bag into the basket, especially when the backrest is lowered (i.e when bub is lying down).

        3. When you folds the pram, the handle bar slams on the ground (i.e. damaging/scratching the handle bar)…unless fold it very slowly/carefully.

        4. The stroller folds ‘outwards’, so you have to take out all the blankets/sheepskin liner. The seat belts & toys just dangling.

We still have the Agile Plus, but hasn't been used since April…still in very good/clean condition. (We've bought another stroller!) Happy to sell the AgilePlus to you for $200. We are in Melbourne.

I don't have children and don't have anything to do with children, so take my comment with a grain of salt… BUT… as far as I recall when my sister was buying a pram, the most important thing was how does it fit? as in, how does it feel for you and your wife to actually have to push and manouevre the thing around? Is the handle high enough? do the wheels track properly? can you easily change direction with it? How hard is it to dismantle and lift into the car?

You have probably already checked all these things out, of course, and so when you say looking for a bargain, you already know what you want, you are just looking for a bargain on the price… aren't you? If not, my first step would most certainly be to take as many as you can for a test stroll, at least around the shop floor. The best bargain my sister found was a collapsible stroller from a chain department store (might have been target) because it was so easy to move around. More convenient = more likely for her to be able to use it to duck in and out for quick errands.

Like Ms Caz, I don't have anything to do with kids, but…

"…The only places we'd want this convenience is at shopping centers …"
One handy piece of advice a friend told me (which was appreciated by all that I've shared it with) is to measure the width of the checkouts at your local grocery store, then make sure your pram is narrow enough to fit through… Hope it helps a little…
