I'd rather wait a bit for the 300 series from AMD and see how it performs, and how it might affect the price of current cards. Good deal for now though.

Yeah, I'd definitely be waiting till next week. If the AMD cards are any good, expect a drop on these.

      Lol, negged - whatever for

Not too keen on the blower style cooler. Can get a dual / triple fan setup for about the same price that should be cooler and quieter.

    • The cheapest 970 with an aftermarket cooler in Australia is the Gainward Phantom which is $461 at MSY. $30 is a bit extra if given the same performance. I've had my 970 Phantom since November last year and whilst I have been very happy with it, I'm a tightarse and probably would have rather saved the money and got a blower card.

Below are videos of a 17cm mini 970 with a tiny cooler and single tiny fan being able to overclock as fast as the cards that are twice the weight and the length (of course it runs hotter and needs higher RPMs, but as a proof of concept it's pretty amazing that a 970 can be in a mITX standard).

These are designed to be used in sli, in which case blower style coolers are superior

    • Totally agree with Merlict2 - these coolers "blow"

      Much better cooling solutions available….

Direct CU II far superior, whether in SLI or not (as long as your board supports two thick cards in SLI)

    • Depends on your computer case. I prefer blowers. I save money. All win as far as I'm concerned.

  • What would be a recommended PC build to put this to good use? Any comment on cost?

Intel 4460, 8GB RAM, any motherboard with PCI-E 3.0 16x (B85 based is fine), DECENT powersupply 500+W, SSD sized to suit - Id recommend 240+GB for most these days, but it really varies, some thats perfectly fine, others will need to add a HDD for mass storage of media or such.

You should be able to build a box only for ~$900 IIRC for this sort of build. That is, you would re-use keyboard/mouse/screen/speakers from your existing PC.
