Differences between 530 and 532 here

      http://www.windowscentral.com/lumia-530-vs-lumia-532-vs-lumi…

Both use the same crappy tft screen though

      • The 532 screen is better.

      • for $39 I expect 4K AMOLED

        • +2

Well for 44 dollars last month some of us picked up the huawei y550 with a 4.5 inch IPS screen.

I am not saying its a bad deal, just bear in mind that it is a crappy screen.

  • Well done all!

Thanks for this Bruce. Great work.

      • +6

        Look who's talking ;-)
Thanks for all the good work, TA.

  • Yay to $1 Telstra pack!!

  • +3

    Thank you TA!

I have enough prepaid sims to last for 2 years 😝

    • @ CoolMJ

      Similar here ;)

  • +1

Hmmm… how is the $30 spend thing going to work at Woolies?

Usually they want you to buy a SIM seperate to groceries, yet this was the opposite with the recent Coles deal and caused much confusion if not together. What would the best procedure be?

(Probably get a better answer at OzB than woolworths! lol)

    • +1

At Woolies last year it varied by store & over time. Staff were generally confused all the time. See the link to last Woolies $1 deal above.

Details may be known at start of deal, but both Woolies & Coles staff did not know how the Telstra promotion worked.

These were not a promotion run by the supermarkets, so t&c were unclear. I trained Coles staff at my store last deal.

    • +1

You just go through the checkout close to the service desk and ask the checkout chick to get one ..easy ,same as Coles.

      • Unless you have inside Woolies or Telsta information on this Telsta run promotion, I'd wait until we know more details. Process at Woolworths was very different to Coles in last deals.

        • Ok..I will be there first up after school drop off..so I will report back.

        • @nocure:
          Thanks ;-)
Last time Woolies was far more chaotic than the Coles deal. Hopefully Telstra have learnt from last deals. And Telstra promotion at Coles was unknown to their staff at start of deal.

        • +8

          @brucefromaustralia:
          Totally right.
I had aggro silverback dominant-monkey checkout chicks telling me several various "definite" versions of how to use the deal last time, mostly while giving me the evil eye and a look suggesting I was attempting some kind of very suss scam, until a routine was established with the deal.

        • +8

          @King Tightarse:
That graphic image with a David Attenborough voice over is now burnt into my brain, KT. Your supermarket experiences seems like a nature documentary gone bad ;-)

I informally train the staff at my supermarkets how these deals work. A Coles staff member was so pleased to tell me how the Telstra deal was working, she ran up excited when I entered the store.

My Woolies gave me 2kg of Tasmanian smoked salmon.

Enroll in my wildlife supermarket staff management course now ;-)

        • @brucefromaustralia:
You certainly seem to have them eating out of your hand, Bruce.

        • +7

          @King Tightarse:
That used to be my work before I took up travel. With 3 words, an award winning actor client went into a deep sleep… 20 people at a time played as 5 year olds… a Minister of Government told me his dark secrets…

KT everything is fine… there is nothing to be concerned about… you are starting to feel heavy… and very s-l-e-e-p-y…
Now give me all your smoked salmon ;-)

    • +3

Put Groceries and SIM together through the register. And when you'll scan the EDR card it will fix everything up.

And if they don't have SIM at the register, they will save your purchase and print a receipt with a barcode on it and will ask you to go to the Service desk and then the lady at the service deak scan that and the SIM and your EDR card and you'll be good to go.

    • "Fine print on the catalogue says offer valid 10th to 16th June… offer must be redeemed by 19th June." Going by that I'd assume you can purchase it later on by scanning the EDR card

      • +1

This was discussed in last year's deal. It varied by stores who interpreted t&c differently. Some stores did not honour prior purchases, or said there was no stock.

        • Ohh, well thanks for the heads up, I'll make sure to grab one before I make a purchase them

        • +3

          @Chanandler:
Ask if there is stock of Telstra $30 Starter Packs & ask how this offer operates BEFORE shopping.
(That is if they know anything about it. Be prepared with the catalog open so they can read it!)

All starter packs now do the same tasks - multi fit in phones & tablets for calls or data.

Look for stock with longest expiry period.

Usual limit of 1 per EDR Card is bound to apply, so sign up for a new card now!

Last time was very confused, which can be an advantage ;-)

        • +1

          @brucefromaustralia:
Cheers bud, I've never bought a sim from a deal like this before so I assumed it'd be straightforward, sounds like I'm very wrong about that :P

        • +1

          @Chanandler:
It could be straight forward. Wait for the feedback.

Because the promotion is run by Telstra, Coles & Woolies staff were unaware of the deal, often denying it existed. Early on in the deals, both supermarkets made up their own rules, which varied by store.

People posted conflicting experiences. When I explained how the Coles deal worked on Whirlpool, I was challenged as not understanding the deal.

        • @brucefromaustralia:
Yeah will do, just hoping there's still stock by the time it's clarified how this works

        • @Chanandler:
Both supermarkets restocked during the promotion periods. Of course some stores may run out.

Restocking usually occurs late on Tuesdays, just before the next sale period.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Chanandler / DisabledUser156467 has left the building!

        • @brucefromaustralia:

Usual limit of 1 per EDR Card is bound to apply, so sign up for a new card now!

Hmm… the catalogue doesn't specify a limit and but it does say it is $1 ea. Wonder if you could get away with 2, wouldn't want to push your luck.

        • +1

          @brucefromaustralia:

so sign up for a new card now!

Last time I grabbed the new EDR form off the service desk when it was needed.

        • @brucefromaustralia: Absolutely … Coles Rundle Mall sometimes doesn't even have SIMs when they're on special.

        • @Dan_:
Limit was 1 per EDR Card last time & 1 per $30 shop.

Break larger purchases into $30 lots & use different EDR cards. Staff may not agree to that idea of course. We will see.

        • @brucefromaustralia:

Break larger purchases into $30 lots & use different EDR cards

Only if I can find stock of the Starter packs.

I haven't got any luck in getting one in the recent Coles deal.

        • @brucefromaustralia:

Do they still have paper cards at the till? I now receive emails from woolies telling me they miss me as I haven't been in for a while

        • @gm3stevens:
Umm that was step 1 in bold above :-)

        • @roughana:
T&C state deal is only for REGISTERED EDR cards. I've picked up a card in store & it failed to register online. That's why I suggested setting up early, just in case.

        • +1

          @gm3stevens:
None in 2 weeks promotion? People were reporting getting 10 & 15 each in the Coles $1 deal. The only limit seemed how much shopping you could do. I didn't even try & picked up 5 with my shopping.

In the deal I recommended late on Tuesdays, when they restock was easiest. Only tried on 3 days during promotion. Picked up 1 at start & 2 both Tuesday's.

        • @brucefromaustralia:

I went to Coles on Thurs. in the last deal and all the $1 Sim were gone. Didn't realize that they will restock it.

Thanks for the heads up Bruce. This time I will pick the right day for shopping :-)

        • @gm3stevens:
I'm just a lazy supermarket shopper, so learnt their systems to save my time.

        • @gm3stevens:

          Happy shopping ;-)

  • +5

does opal top ups count as the $30?

    • +1

Do gift cards count? And also combine this with the AMEX offer to get a further $10 off

    • It should work

      • +1

but this is at woolies tho?

        • I know got confused with coles deal

    • Opal topup worked for the Vodafone $30 starter pack for $5 deal a couple of months back, so I suspect the mechanics here are similar. Since redemption is by 19th, this means you scan your EDR card when making the qualifying purchase, then take the card to the service counter and buy the starter kit for $1.

I suspect that gift cards don't count, nor do the usual exceptions like alcohol and tobacco.

      • I concur

      • I'd say that's what will likely occur. Will be confirmed at start of deal.

    • Yep, just did it at Town hall.

  • Same Nescafe machine that was running out the door recently at $58 at Big W. This time, with plenty of pods!

    • shame its pretty average coffee

  • is 532 much better than the 520 deal from Kmart

    • +3

Double the RAM, Quad core as opposed to dual core in the 520. Definitely worth it!

      • Does it work with Aldimobile ?

        • -1

          What he said

        • A Telstra phone, so yes.

Will be getting two. Is paperwork still needed for phone purchases ?

        • +1

If you get a telstra sim with expiry longer than 6 months, then activate the sim 6 months from now and use the credit to unlock the 532 :) Only paying $40 in total!

        • @vjknight: Just because it's a Telstra phone doesn't necessarily mean it will work with Aldi mobile. The Telstra Nokia 530's from Coles back in December didn't work with an Aldi Mobile SIM - although they did apparently work with Boost mobile. May be different this time around though?

        • +1

@vjknight:Some stores may require you to fill out paperwork, but they shouldn't because the rules were changed ages back to provide ID at time of service activation.

        • @repair-pro:
Don't you need to have the phone activated and in continuous use for 6 months? How much credit does it come with?

        • @cheapbloke: no, it's based on the agree of the phone itself.

        • Does NOT work with Aldi unless you unlock the phone. Just tried it.

      • +2

The other benefits for the 532 over the 530 is 8gb of storage, glance, and double tap to wake. All nice features to have, especially on a phone at this price point.

    • Lumia 530 not 520. I think the 520 is a lot better than the 530.

The Lumia 532 is a lot better than the 530. I'd still prefer the $49 Alcatel POP s3 phone over both.

    • +1

This is a better phone. What was better about the 530 Kmart deal was the 3 months Netflix.

    • The current deal from Kmart is the Optus Lumia 530.

  • Yay more $1 Telstra packs :)
    Cheersssss!

  • +1

Will the telstra sim be limited to 1 per EDR card? or can i repeat the purchase?

  • +3

$1 Telstra packs!! Yay for Google Apps for ~96.66% off :)

    • What's the reference to "Google Apps for ~96.66% off" ???

      • +1
      • +1

        $30 google play credits for $1 = 96.66666666% off
        edit: beaten by illumination

  • sweeeeeeeet, more $1 packs.

Went overseas halfway through the previous deal so i didn't get a chance to stock up as much as i would have liked. Will do this time. Just need to stock up on tinned tomatoes, beans etc..

    • +1

What do you guys all do with these $1 starter packs? Just use the call credit and don't care about the number it's attached to? Or do you have some other use for it?

      • +1

See the Wiki page for ideas.

      • +1

Activate on cap plan, $29 me2u credit transfer to my primary sim. Burn the calls/data.

        • Oh huh, I did not know about that, no need to port a number right? :)

          Thanks!

      • Well I was porting the number to a $1 voda sim then immediately porting it back to Telstra up until now - but I think MattP's method is a lot easier :)

        • I think MattP method is to port out and in as well?

        • @congngo:
It's listed in Telstra Starter Pack Wiki, with a few variations.

      • +1

What do you guys all do with these $1 starter packs?

        Data,data and more data.

  • Any way of making the $30 google credit appear on my google play account without having to insert sim into anything? Is there an online process which can achieve this?

    • I am not aware of one. If you do find one, please let us know.

  • +1

Just looking past the SIM hysteria for a moment, the catalogue cover page trumpets five '1/2 Price' deals and the $24.19 400G Moccona has been reduced by $7.19 to $17. Is this misrepresentation an 'aggro silverback dominant-monkey checkout chick' failure or something more sinister? And since it says 1/2 price can I buy it, pay $17 and then go to the Service Desk and claim a full refund because I was overcharged?

    • +4

The 1/2 price circle doesn't touch the picture of the Moccona. Also note the grey circle around the Moccona makes it a bit of a grey area.

      • The dirty rotten thieving bas***ds.

  • So is the nokia locked to telstra. Whats the best value telstra sim only plan for data?

    • $140 for 16GB, 2 year expiry.

You can spend the $140 on Google Play or Windows Phone store and still have the data available.

  • +1

I wish Netflix has Google Play billing…

  • it begins…

  • M'kay, I just came home with a Lumia 532. Thanks TA!

However the 8GB MicroSD advertised on the box is not contained within; not in the phone, not loose in the box. The packaging looked unmolested. Has this happened to anyone else?

FYI, bought a 530 in October and its 4GB card was preinstalled.

    • +1

i believe the 8GB is the built-in ROM, did the box specifically say an 8GB microSD included?

      • +4

The box says 8 GB eMMC, the slot in the phone is marked microSD.

Damn, I should've googled that before posting. eMMC = embedded MMC. I'm going to hide in the back of my cave for a while.

        • ;-)

  • +1

    Got a $30 SIM for $1.
    No problems.
