OP originally posted $629.10 as the 'regular' price, which was actually $699. They have since added that it is only a student price into the title only as a result of the comment above being posted.
      • That's the student price. Price for everyone else is still $699

      ..read the title

      • It's been edited.

        • Oops my bad

  • I think it's for students… Is this for students?

    Student price only, $699 normally.
    No bargain.

  • Obviously the specs are different, but how does this compare performance-wise to my Surface Pro 1?

    • Poorly. Battery life is definitely better, but this is basically a baytrail tablet, if you look at the performance.

I always think Microsoft priced them too high.

    • Thought

    • Yeah, I personally think it's better to wait around few months until they start reducing the price to a point where it's reasonable (happened with SP1, SP2, and to lessor degree SP3).

      • Especially there are so many cheap Windows Tablet around.

        • True, I think if Vivotab Note 8 was better built, had a HDMI port with a keyboard dock support, I would've bought Vivotab Note 8. I am saying this because I think those are the differentiating factors for Surface series imo (active stylus exist on Vivotab Note 8). Though I personally want to get this even if it is slightly expensive (I would seriously consider getting this if it was around 400~500) than the other tablets. MS does have a decent customer support and the build quality of their product seem to be amazing imo. Also, active stylus is a big plus for me (though I prefer wacom over n-trig since I own a wacom pen).

we've gone from desktop hardware jammed into laptops to tablets glorified by adding keyboards…. the great leap sideways

    • Hahhaa #preach!

I think it's amazing to see something thin and light, something that can be charged with USB, being able to run desktop programs. ARM tablets, while being powerful, were not exactly productive. You can read PDFs, you can watch movies, but word editing and other things, were to be done on desktop or a PC.

I think Intel atom tablets are more productive than an ARM tablets for that reason. You can run programs that your desktop can run, while being compact. Obviously there are rooms for improvements, such as, better touchscreen support from 3rd party is major one out there.

  • IMHO you get a lot less hardware for a little less money compared to the pro versions.

    • 40% more is a pretty significant jump. And the i5 costs twice as much..

    • i3 version is totally not worth it. Better get i5 version and that is almost 2x cost of this device. If sp3 was still around 1000 AUD but our dollar is going down and USD going up. Cheapest SP 3 is 1034 dollars student price. And i5 version is 1259 Dollars student price.
