Has anyone used one of these? Are they any good?
I have seen some USB2 video adapters that if you sneeze the wrong way, they drop the display and you need to fiddle around to get a display again.
I am hoping that this USB3 one would be more forgiving

    • From my experience, USB 3.0 connectors tend to be a bit more finicky (with the extra pins…). Can't say much about this particular device though.

I use USB3.0 to VGA and it works perfectly to expand my working area (3 displays). I never use for games, but works fine for Youtube.

    • I've actually bought one of these before on eBay that is identical to the one listed above. However, it was only able to output 800 x 600 on my machine. I'm not sure about this one but it did not go too well for me.

  • At 17cm length how do they expect us to connect our laptop to the monitor or LCD TV ?

It's an adapter with a female HDMI output…

      • Aha !
Thanks for that. So you will also need a normal HDMI cable for whatever length ?

        • No. You will need mini hdmi to normal hdmi cable. You can see in the picture that it says mini.

        • @dadeadman: Look like full size HDMI?

The pictured logo/label says "mini HD", as in "a small HD video adapter", not "mini HDMI" referring to the connector.

        • @elusive: My bad. You are right. So we just need Normal HDMI cable.

    • Ahhh AliExpress… the online store with the emotional roller coaster experience.
      Pass. ;)

Its the same cheap stuff you'd normally find on ebay, probably the same sellers too. I've had heaps of orders on aliexpress always arrived.

  • I have never seen a laptop with usb 3.0 support but no hdmi or mini hdmi port. But if this thing is available for purchase, there must be some.

Usually used for a triple monitor setup. everyone at my work has usb3.0 replicators.

    • You probably haven't seen any thinkpad laptop eh? I use X230T with USB 3.0 but no HDMI, only display port.

      • +2

This, I think Lenovo hates HDMI.

      • +1

Display port is better than HDMI anyway.

      • +2

A displayport to hdmi adaptor would be cheaper than on of these

  • Any cheap dual head ones or should I just buy two?

I'm concerned that it says/the model number is 1080p yet it specifies up to 2k (Seeking to drive two 1920x1200s)

  • i wander if this causes high cpu usage (40%) when playing moves? The one I bought from aliexpress did, however that was a usb 3 to vga one for $9usd

  • Does this act as an external graphic card? If its just a converter, then it won't work on a laptop with a shared graphics.

    • Yeh it's not actually an "adapter" at all, but a USB3 connected GPU. They just use "adapter" cos it's small and looks like one. Gives me the shits!

  • On a different topic, I am trying to use a USB laser Brother HL1110 with network using (a) USB port on Netgear CG3000v2 (b) usb port on Seagate Go Flex Home network HDD (c) USB port on Readynas v1, and it works with none of them. I mean I am not able to print to the printer through any of these connections.

Would something like this work for me ?
    http://www.newfrog.com/p/rj45-extension-adapter-cable-usb-ca…

    • You need a USB print server. The above product simply allows a different wire for the same data/protocol.

What you need is a USB print server: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/181473672734

      • But the user manual that come with these devises say that we can use a USB printer with them, does that mean there is a print server inbuilt ?
