    • Did you disable your mousepad function key F7? Some of my function keys didn't work until I installed the intel i/o driver so maybe try that.

    • +3

You installed the optional Intel drivers which is not compatible with the trackpad for some reason. Go into Device Manager find the Intel Serial IO I2C with the exclamation mark next to it, double click it, goto the drivers tab and choose "Roll Back Driver". Should then fix the problem. Hide that update so you don't accidentally install it again.

      • +1

        PERFECT - worked, thanks man!

Good TIP for all - as the auto updates will do this!

        • +1

Me too, big thanks. Stupid windows update!

    • Did you accidentally turn off the trackpad? Think from memory, its FN-F6 or FN-F7… its around there anyway.

  • Anyone know how to get Acer Backup Manager? To image the HDD now that's the system is setup?

Can't download it anywhere it seems and not already on the system unless I deleted it as bloatware?

Can't re-download it it seems either if so,

    thanks guys!

    • it is called Acer Recovery Management. if you can't see it in the program list then you must have removed it as bloatware.
I believe the only way to get it back free is to reset your PC to its factory settings.

      • Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!

        Deleted it as bloatware… :(

      • +1

Thanks, but this tool is not able to image your HDD, it's for recovery. I have this still on the laptop and tried it to no avail.

        • Sorry I misunderstood.
Have you tried this tool: under System and Security -> File History -> (lower left corner) System Image backup?

        • +1

I use Acronis True Image 2014 to do my cloning & specific backup / restoring. Works a charm. But it's not free, there could be a limited trial version though.

        • +1

          @ddhytz:

Perfect, thank you guys, running this now!

  • Guys, Sydney is pretty much depleted. Practically all stores are on back order. I just got the last one at Wetherill Park (a repack cos customer returned it as it doesn't have an optical drive, hasn't even been turned on apparently). They offered me $45 for extra 2 year replacement warranty. I needed $300 invoice for TRS but instead got them to price match MSY's $59 Logitech G602 (JB sticker price is $99. Heard them say "only 6 bucks difference, do it". So their cost price must be $53).

Chatswood Chase/Westfield may have stock. Inventory system said they have 6 but I wouldn't trust it. Best to call.

  • Which caddy have people used in the optical drive bay? I have Googled around using the model number and didn't find anything useful.

    • It must be standard 12.7 one. The only thing you need are bracket from back side and front panel, both you can take off from cap.

  • +1

i've just lost my trackpad on the laptop.
i think it was because I installed an optional driver update, Intel I2C bus driver or something along those lines.
works find when i reboot into the win8 system restore menu.

    just a warning to others… :)

    now doing a factory restore

    • +3

No need to System restore. See earlier posts. Just Roll Back drivers.

      • System restore had no entries from today unfortunately so no good

        • +1

As above man, just go into device manager, find the I2C, right click properties and roll back the driver

I think the icon was actually highlighted with an esclamation mark

Same happened to me, easy fix thanks to the community here!

        • +2

Yeah, but I'm saying this has come up before for me and others, all you have to do is follow the instructions provided before to roll back your drivers to the one before your update and it should restore your trackpad function. You don't need to do any system restores. Here is the instructions again:

You installed the optional Intel drivers which is not compatible with the trackpad for some reason. Go into Device Manager find the Intel Serial IO I2C with the exclamation mark next to it, double click it, goto the drivers tab and choose "Roll Back Driver". Should then fix the problem. Hide that update so you don't accidentally install it again.

        • @exile: Aah oops missed that solution. Oh well, back up and running now, just a big waste of time.

        • +1

@daft009: Glad to hear you got the back up running again. :) Sucks that you'll have to re-download the updates again, took me half a day to get them done. I think this is actually a really big problem for people who don't know much about computers and decides to install all the updates. I would imagine they would then go back to JB thinking its some sort of hardware fault.

  • with the cash back? are you guys sending it in with registered post?

    • +1

      No I'm not

  • +1

Good price for 250. Bargain with the cashback. Build quality is better than I thought it would be. Well done Acer.

  • +1

So to the ones who got the Acer what would you give it out of 10?

    • +1

      Original laptop = 3/10
Upgraded laptop with ram and ssd = 8/10
Upgraded laptop considering the price I paid = over 9000 /10

      • +2

        Upgraded laptop with Kingston 1.35V 8GB RAM + Samsung 850 EVO 120GB SSD + Ultra Low Power Consumption + 6.5 hour battery life @ $214 = 11/10

Exceptional value and so much wow for this little quad core cpu :)

Runs Foxtel Go, Kodi, Google Chrome, YouTube 1080p and Multitasks perfectly - my NEW HTPC :D

        • +2

Yeah in standard form it's not much chop. 3/10 not considering price. 6/10 considering price (because it's still SLOW imo)

After upgrades 9/10. The only thing better would have been a proper standardised Windows 8.1 OEM (not that "bing" sh!t which creates problems if you want to get tricky)

Honestly it's a great lappy, after upgrades nothing under $450 is going to come close.

        • +1

          @Click_It:

Agreed, I'm just super happy having a FREE genuine upgrade to Windows 10 (hopefully a non-with bing edition).

Better than shelling out $150+ for a Windows 8.1 Genuine License.

        • +1

          @Xenatos:

Well the jury is still out on whether we actually will qualify for the free Win10 upgrade. Since MS don't support this Bing version I'm now doubtful that will change come time to handing out Win10 freebies.

I'm going to look further into this see if there is any announcements regarding it but I'm thinking we'll have to buy it to get it - which isn't as bad as it sounds, Win8 deals were <$10 new, I expect there will be the same for Win10. I bought 2 or 3 licenses more than I needed then, I'll do that same this time as you always find a use for them once it's too late.

    • It is silly question :-) , the laptop is not state of the art, BUT it is new and fresh (replacement for 10 yo one).

I have added 8gigs and now it runs without any issues, I thought about ssd, but so far it is a laptop for havy surfing (+ browser flash games), skype, facebook etc. So for ~300 aud I got decent machine which handles all those tasks. Having IPS screen nearby make this one looks not really good (but that was obvious before buying).

It is not mackbook, and not a gaming machine, but if we consider the price frame, I can give it 10/10, it is best value for that money for sure.

If we talk about altimate comparison and you give 10 to macbook pro or decent alien beast, then this little one would be 3/10 I guess :-)

  • +1

This isn't expired. Today is the last day of the sale. I checked with JB Hifi yesterday.

    Edit: The laptop I mean

    • +1

Good luck if you can find stock tho…. Has been ozbargained

      • I called JB Hifi and spoke to the Manager. We can order it through them but it may take a week or two for stock to get to the local store, or more. Payment is required upfront but it's still possible to get it at $253.30. Not sure about acer cashback. I'm going to send them an email with proof of purchase to see if I can still get cashback if I send them the box/code cutout once I've received it because chances of getting the laptop in before the end of this month seem really slim.

        • +1

Same laptop for 233 (after cashback and $25 off) - here
          25 off

        • +1

          @shapers:

I just paid $253 at JB Hifi to order one in. Checked Harvey norman and they don't have stock. They'd have to order it in so I might miss out on the cash back deal anyway so it'd be $272 with the $25 off if I do. AFAIK you have to have the laptop in hand to get the SND/code on the box for cashback to work.

        • @djevoultion: Ahh fair enough, they have heaps in my local store

        • +2

          @shapers:

For anyone still interested in the deal from JB but your local store does not have stock. You can order it through your local store as a customer order / layby (depending on store). It will take about two weeks to get the laptop in.I've spoken to an Acer rep about cash back. Apparently cashback is available up until 2 weeks from 31 May 2015. Meaning the last day you can submit a cash back request for this laptop is 14 June 2015.

  • +2

Got Acer email confirmation: my cashback claim is accepted. :)

    • Awesome :) how long ago did you send the letters in?

  • +4

Guys, I've written lots of fragmented posts in this deal, slowly but surely I've figured some things out and wanted to share it so everyone knows about this "Bing" version.

    1. What is Windows 8.1 with Bing?
It's a free version MS provide to developing nations and ship in low end devices (tablets and now laptops). This is how this laptop deal was so cheap.

    2. Are there any downsides to having the Bing version?
    Yes there are.
Microsoft provide no official support for this version. Forget about doing a fresh install because you won't be able to get the "/w Bing" ISO needed to recognise your BIOS embedded product key. (There is at least 1 leaked version floating around, its a x86 (32 bit) version, use at own risk and understand the limitations of 32 bit)

    3. How can I get this OS from HDD to SSD?
    Cloning software or Acer Recovery.
It's vital you do one of these right away, if you mess up your OS and don't have one Microsoft will tell you to buy a new license. Don't delete Acer Recovery as people have said it's impossible to re-download (I can't comment on this).

    4. Will we qualify for free Windows 10 upgrades later this year?
    I'm betting on NO.
If MS don't officially support this version it's unlikely they'll give us a free Windows 10 upgrade path.
Makes sense if you think about it, MS got $0 from Acer for the OS by passing the buck onto the end-customer. Be it Windows 8 or 10, eventually we'll have to cough up. I hope I'm wrong.

I'm hoping there are similar bargains on Windows 10 like we got with 8 (I bought a few licenses at the time for ~$7ea)

    • +2

(There is at least 1 leaked version floating around, its a x86 (32 bit) version, use at own risk and understand the limitations of 32 bit)

What about the one in my post?

      File info: X19-57272_SW_DVD9_NTRL_Win_with_Bing_8.1_64BIT_English_OEM.img

PM me for magnet link if you can't be bothered to make a MyDigitalLife forum account

      • Interesting! I missed that post. Yet to check it out but if it is what it claims to be then yes, a fresh install should work fine.

Unsure of the legalities, its a grey area I think - you'd be using your own product key you rightfully own within the BIOS, but using a leaked version not officially endorsed by MS. Anyone who's stuck without a working OS because they didn't know the limitations of this /w Bing version probably don't care about that though.

Feels like all I have been doing the last 3 days is installing OS's onto these laptops. But if anyone is really curious about whether this works I might check it out (after making a nice clone of my present OS that is)

  • +1

It is possible to do a clean install of any the win8 versions … do your research and
with persistence you will succeed. The only problem I've encounterd was with HDMI out
not syncing with my monitor. TV was ok, but "no signal" to the Acer 24"monitor. Eventually
got it to work with the fourth cable I tried and different Intel driver. Very happy with
    the E14 so far …

  • So is the installed Windows really so bad once 8 gig RAM and SSD is installed and bloatware is removed.

    • +1

Absolutely not performance or functionality wise.

Just limited with what you can do… especially if you're coming from Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate etc.

  • So i paid for this laptop today at Macarthur jb hi fi. They said it should be in by mid next week.

  • With all this problem with re-installing a clean Windows version, would I have the same problem if I have purchased a key for Windows 8 and now use that for this laptop, ie can I install a new version of Windows 8 on this laptop based on my own key? Really don't like this "Windows 8 with Bing" bul*s**t.

    • You certainly can. I was tempted to do the same thing (i technically have a spare Windows 8 key but I'm keeping it aside for when I build my daughter an Intel NUC in the near future)

  • +1

    My experience:

I pulled it out of the box, and it was slow as. For comparison, I have upgraded from the $200 eMachines netbook from 2010 (thank you ozbargain - great little thing!).

That netbook was good, I upgraded from 1 to 2 GB ram, and over the course of 4 years it really slowed down, which is fair enough (it went through a lot). This new laptop seemed about as fast as the eMachines one is now. It would get so much lag opening a new tab, waiting for the 'common pages' to load, start typing in the address bar, text would appear all in one dump a few seconds later. Even after a restart.

Since then, I have upgraded to a Kingston V300 240GB SSD and 8GB RAM, both from MSY.

Now it seems to run normally. This is my first experience with an SSD, and I have to say, during operation, using chrome, searching the computer, it feels no faster than a brand new laptop that I've used in the past (including the eMachines mentioned above, when it was new). I was expecting it to be lightning fast, new tabs still take about half a second to be ready. Open settings in Chrome and that takes pretty much bang on 2 seconds to be fully displayed (measured by hand with a stop-watch).

Have only just installed upgrades earlier this evening, so have not yet experienced boot time, but I expect this is where it will be most noticeable.

Like I said, new to this SSD experience, so not sure if my expectations are too high, but I was expecting it to be at least obviously noticeable (in terms of operation), over a standard HDD-equipped machine.

What are other people's thoughts? Am I expecting too much, or is there something wrong with my machine perhaps?

Either way, amazing piece of kit for the total price! = D

Thank you again OzBargain, and thank you TRENT86!

    • +1

try Firefox, re-run same tests, posts your results.

    • +1

The lag frustration you felt before the upgrades I 100% share. One of my laptops has received an SSD (still 2GB RAM) while the other is still completely stock (waiting on things to arrive still).

SSD made a huge difference for me, but multitasking hits the 2GB ceiling right away, it's kinda like being 6 foot tall and having 6'1 ceilings. Live within those heights and it feels pretty good, try to do anything fancy and its limits are felt. I truely think the 8GB will solve all remaining issues I have. The SSD took 90% of the pain away.

You could be expecting a little too much, not being disrespectful as I think I was the same coming from a screaming fast and powerful laptop it took a few days to adjust. Remembering it's $214 makes it feel pretty good to me.

      • +1

Very interesting that you say that the SSD fixed 90% of your lag.

I assumed that the lag fix I experienced after the upgrades (as I did both at once), was mainly due to the RAM upgrade. I assumed this because prior to the upgrade, task manager was showing RAM usage to be upwards of 1.7-1.8 GB IIRC, even after a fresh start up, and just surfing a couple of tabs. Now I am at 3+GB usage.

On top of that, as mentioned the computer seems to runs as fast as any HDD system, so it made it seem like removing the limiting factor of RAM, is what made it run "normally", ie. fixed the lag. As this fix aligned with past experience of upgrading RAM.

        • +1

Well I'm in a unique situation at the moment, I'm doing staggered upgrades as I have 2 laptops - my wife gets the smaller older SSD but no RAM upgrade since she'll only be Facebooking and doing her budgeting. I get a Samsung 120GB 850 EVO + 8GB RAM but only the RAM has arrived (just an hr ago) because I'm an impatient multitask hog.

So I can say that the 8GB RAM did remove some lag, probably most of it actually. The other delay I am feeling is just the nature of HDD performance.

THe wife's laptop is much faster with SSD and only 2GB RAM but to be fair I didn't try seeing what happens when I push it into virtual ram much. It'll certainly slow down a bit then but I reckon still out in front as the mechanicals of a HDD is no longer in the picture. I could be wrong though.

I can't wait to receive the Samsung 850 EVO. I almost bought the 850 PRO but then figured it'd be a waste on this laptop - that's more for highend desktops (I have the 840 PRO in my desktop and love it).

          We're both right I say :)

        • @Click_It:

Where did you order the 850 EVO if you don't mind me asking?

        • @djevoultion:

          PCCG
          http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&p…
$109, it's $6 off the cheapest (source: StaticIce)

I got it from them because I had $300 in store credits. I also got a 4TB HDD, only had to pay the shipping :)

          I umm'd and ahh'd about buying this PCI-E SSD
          http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

… for my Desktop and putting my desktop's Samsung 840 PRO into the laptop… would have been NICE but my NAS needed more storage added on. Besides over the next 6-12 months there is going to be heaps of new products in this space so those PCIE cards are going to get faster AND cheaper.

    • +1

Could it be the SSD that you have chosen? I've had no issues with Samsung 840's (2 of them). They are blazing fast and the difference between HDD and Samsung SSD is noticed immediately. I plan on getting a 120GB SSD for this laptop once I receive it. Also looking at getting an external monitor when once is next on sale

      • +1

I had considered this, AFTER I just went out and bought the cheapest one.

I have since read reviews, and it seems that the main issue the V300 experiences is over the long term, the OS TRIM command is not so effective at maintaining peak performance. But otherwise, out-of-the-box performance, according to bench tests, seems to be about on par with others.

But the next model up of 240GB SSD was 159, VS 122! That is quite a difference!

Have you decided on which brand/model of SSD you want to upgrade with? I would be curious to know how you perceive the performance of this laptop after an SSD upgrade, and which SSD you chose.

        • +1

Yep I'm sticking with Samsung so it'll be either an 840 or 850 EVO or PRO version if it's cheap. :)

I'll let you know how it goes.

  • Hi… hope someone can help me……. I bought this laptop yesterday and just now i was trying to enter the cashback details….damn… i cant see the SNID. JB or Acer has put a sticker on it completely hiding it. Cant peel it off as well. I can see the other side has some numbers.

Would someone please check if there is any relation between the SNID and the number elsewhere on the box? Or is there any other way to get the SNID?

thanks guys… otherwise my $35 down deep in the gutter….

    Sab

    • turn your machine over. there is a sticker there with SNID and S/N.

      • thanks..found it. Not sure if Acer would accept a screenshot of it. Anyway would give it a go.

  • +3

but you still need to cut or peel that SNID off for cash back

  • Hope the cashback still works if you bought it with the $20 JB discount voucher because 39>20.

  • Guys, I am not really familiar with changing HDD to SSD and don't feel like taking the risk. If I just change RAM to 8 GB instead, will it improve the speed of laptop at all? And what about 4 GB instead of 8 GB? Please give an opinion if someone has already tried it.

    • +1

Yes it will improve one kind of problem.
You would notice a speed improvement whilst browsing around. The SSD would make a more noticeable difference. You need both the get the full effect. 4GB would be fine for a laptop at this level with standard use.
A wild guess - 30/70% with the SSD being 70% of the overall effect.

    • +1

running on the increased RAM of 8GB only right now, happy and seems fine for basic workload, MS Outlook, Excel, Word and Web browsing.

Will do the SSD if this thing slows down though…worried about the difficulty in cloning (not done it before)

    • +1

Just running Chrome pushes use of memory to 3.5-4GB (dozen of tabs), so if you don't have to push it to virtual memory it incredibly improves speed. Windows by itself loads about 1.5 in idle mode.

With ssd you would improve speed of windows startup time (but I usually use hybenate, so it does not make sense) or if you run heavy programs with large files, but again, just starting them. With 8GB ram you are ok to run photoshop with not very complicated tasks.

After windows hits 6.5-7GB of ram (out of 8), it will start swapping some of the data, so you will see a drop in performance.

  • +3

putting this here in case it helps someone :
    1. case can be opened by the 16 screws underneath. this is not one of those open from the keyboard side laptops. open carefully, the bottom cover is attached to motherboard with a cable
    2. hdd is easily replaceable
    3. there is only 1 ram slot. also it uses ddr3l (low votage)
    4. in my case it didnt like MBR disk with legacy boot. GPT disk and UEFI boot worked (I installed a fresh copy of win 8)
Laptop seems 1000% faster after upgrades

  • Looks like there is no more stock from MSY on the 8GB or RAM ?
Any other way of getting the RAM with a good price ?

    Thanks.

  • +1

Is it worthwhile just skipping the hassle of installing Windows 8.1 (fresh install) on this notebook and going straight to Windows 10 Technical Preview… How would that work anyway?? (8GB RAM + Samsung 120GB EV0 850 SSD)

    • +2

Give it a go! It should be fine. You'd just use the Windows 10 Preview key to install it. But be aware that it's a Preview release so you could run into issues.

  • +2

Also, massive props to JB Hi-Fi.

I purchased this laptop for 299 a week ago, as per the previous deal, went back on Saturday, as I thought it would be worth a shot.

Asked the guy in the computer department, he put me onto the manager, I explained to the manager, "I know it's a long shot but…" he asked me to come to the counter, and refunded me the difference. = )

Once again, JB impresses with its customer service.

    • +1

      @Kkuba

You have a good manager at your JB Hifi store. My experience with them has been very different. Especially the Cairns Central store.

  • So there are some serious WiFi stability issues with this notebook (as much as I love it) and I'm looking at replacing the built in Mini PCI Express card with an "Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 7260 Mini PCI-E Adaptor OEM" which is currently available for $29 :)

    http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/…

    http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&p…

    Your thoughts, fellow OZBargainers?

    • +2

I noticed I was having some issues with the WiFi today as well…

Not sure where the post is now, but another user reported earlier in this thread (I think) that they uninstalled the drivers, reinstalled, continued to have issues for another day, then everything improved. ?? Sorry I can't be of more help than that, but I suppose it might be worth a try.

Is this item you listed just a direct swap, just like RAM?

    • +1

Also, how did you establish that it is a issue with the oem wifi unit, as opposed to just a poorly designed antenna? Or are you just taking stabs in the dark in an attempt to improve performance?

      • +3

No stabs in the dark here @Kkuba :)

I went and bought one of these today (shortly after I posted) from Allneeds Computers in the CBD and installed it within 5 minutes in the notebook.

The difference in performance, range, speed and reliability (for $29) is absolutely worlds apart!

Installed the Mini PCI Express chip, reconnected the two antenna leads (based on how the previous el'cheapo chip was connected) and wala!

Like magic, when I turned my PC back on it automatically updated the driver's, asked me to restart (noticing a system change) and worked straight away with improved bluetooth the notebook can now see 2.4 Ghz and 5Ghz (dual band) WiFi + my Netgear AC Router.

Super happy! Highly recommend to you all! :D

        • +2

Sounds good and final "wise" upgrade for one of these units. Not much harder than swapping out the RAM.
$25-30 bucks buys a solid improvement and probably saves hours of stress. This is certainly not the first time I have heard of no frills generic wifi cards giving people crap.
Well done, a smart improvement and the last piece of the puzzle with the hardware on these.

          @King Tightarse:

Thank you @KT, as far as I'm concerned there's nothing that comes close for the price / value proposition.

          • 2.1 Ghz Quad Core Celeron 14" Acer Notebook with HDMI + USB 3.0 (Ultra Low Power @ approx 6-9w during use) @ $214
          • Kingston 8GB SODIMM DDR3 1600 1.35V RAM @ $79
          • Samsung 850 EVO 120GB SSD @ $88
          • Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 7260 Mini PCI-E @ $29
          • Windows 8.1 with Bing @ $0

          Total = $410

I'm not sure how you could do better for the price :D

          @Xenatos:

Love your work! While I haven't noticed wifi issues on mine, I would like having 5Ghz AC and maybe improved range when I'm on public WiFi. $29 seems reasonable for that.

Unsure but I think our Acer's shipped with this (or similar). The Intel 7260 certainly looks superior.

Since I have 2 laptops I could do some comparisons when mine arrives, if anyone's interested.

          $30.50, might suit some people.

Thanks for testing. If I have any wifi issues I'll upgrade to that chip as well. I have it in my main Metabox P157SM and it's been working fine.

Edit: Curious where you got the SSD for $88. Could you link me please. Thanks

          @djevoultion:

It was a shopping express deal. The 120gb now out of stock.

          @Click_It:

Bugger. Oh well. I'll just wait for the next deal to come along. Shopping express usually have deals on SSD's every so often

          @Xenatos:

Wanted to add something to this Wifi comment.

I already purchased the 7260 (yet to arrive) so I could get 5Ghz AC but I have noticed 1 of my 2 laptops wifi sucks, drops out regularly while the other is flawless so obviously wifi is hit-n-miss with these. I'll swap my existing good one over when the 7260 arrives so it's all good :)

By the way, while fellow members on Ozbargain have mentioned the price as $79, Kingston 8GB SODIMM DDR3 1600 1.35V RAM is for $76 in MSY Adelaide. I just bought it yesterday.

Anyone manage to create a USB recovery backup? I tried with a 16gb USB and it's returning an error. I suspect there is not enough space on a 16gb USB. Haven't had an issue with WIFI (yet) and that's using the laptop in an upstairs room while my modem is downstairs. WIFI speed has been very good and stable for me.

I did but I used a 32GB card for mine, I think it was slightly over 16GB. Remember to de-crap first, that'll save some space (just don't remove Acer Recovery!)

Have you checked the formatting of your usb? It can't be FAT32, only supports max file size of 4GB. Other forum members have run into this problem ;) Suggest trying exFAT if this is the issue.

  • Does anyone know what size caddy (9.5mm or 12.7mm) I would need if I wanted to remove the dummy optical drive and place a second HDD/SSD in there?

  • Can you put 3 cash backs in the 1 envelope?

    • Yeah would like to know too.. I got 2 units of these.

16gb worked for me. 9.5mm caddy starts around $6 on ebay.
