I'm confused - Need new phone, any suggestions

Hi All,

I've been looking through posts on mobile phones and now my head hurts. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Currently I have an iPhone 4s and am with Amaysim.
I'm looking for a phone that has a bigger screen, I can check and write emails and listen to audiobooks - those are the main things I'm after (and of course for making calls and texting!). A nice camera would be good and I'm thinking andriod this time around.

I had a look at the Mlais M52 and the Asus Zenfone 2 and then OnePlusOne and then…… totally confused. I like the Mlais because of the price, (if I can get a decent phone for under $200 - that would be grand!!!!) but read it best to get one that's Taiwanese made - how do I find out where a phone is made?? Then there's the Huawei - which one!!

Thanks in advance.

Many cheap generic phones will have really crappy camera sensors. They often lie about it too — the camera is often only capable of 8 megapixels but in reality the shots are interpolated (blown up) to 13 megapixel resolution. The result is a high resolution but very grainy photograph, with terrible under or over exposure.

The megapixel count never tells you the full story, so don't believe what the specs tell you.

The MLAIS M52's advert gives you the assumption that it has a camera with 6 physical lenses. I don't think it does, considering how cheap the phone is it is more likely they will not have given you a "Sony Exmor IMX214" with f/2.0 aperture.

This snapshot off GeekBuyings website for the M52 phone with a so called "13 megapixel camera with 6 physical lenses"

It is actually ripped off from One Plus One's website (see how similar it is), and photoshopped into their ad in a horizontal orientation.

    And these minimalistic icons

are also also assets that were originally used from the One Plus site.

The other thing to take into consideration is the battery size — my recently received uHappy phone claims a 2500 mah battery but Deal Extreme notes that it is in fact 2100mah.

TLDR buy a branded phone if you are expecting some kind of truth to it's advertised specifications.

  • Moto G.

  • hard to go past the 'Never Settle,' rocket, even One+ year on /
Perhaps only a G3 might eclipse it. Good branch into android.

  • Im using the Xiaomi Note 5.5" Love this phone, now over your $200
join the line up for http://www.elephone.hk/P7000.html $160 USD == $202 AUD

Reminds me of the doge memes.

  • As you have used iPhone 4s, have you considered iPhone 6 if budget is not an issue. Comparing the cheap Android phones' camera with iPhone will leave you unhappy.
If budget is an issue, then OnePlusOne is a good option.

    • budget is $200.

but you also cant compare a $1000 phone to an under $200 cheapy.

  • Thanks for the replies. So I'm still not sure what to do lol.
So in a nutshell, these Chinese/Taiwanese phones might not be as good as they are made out to be - ok.
Yes, had a look at the Moto G, I'll still consider it.
I'll have to do a bit of research on the other two.
Good point, I've been using either an iPod touch or a iPhone 4s for about 6 years but……..they are so expensive, really, overpriced. And I'm trying to curb my addiction to devices. Just something reliable (no device is without its weak point - true), suppose it's what I'm prepared to put up with.

    Shall have another ponder…………

Moto G is a little outdated… also limited on RAM, internal storage and the shots it takes isn't exactly stellar either.

Just buy a Zenfone 2 (16GB, LTE) for around $240 delivere, going by comments on this deal i posted most users seem to be OK with it. It won't take very good pictures though (but still better than a MotoG) and the battery is not removable though.

Otherwise, I would very strongly consider an Lg G3 or a 1+1. Both will be good all-around phones.

      • Thanks.
Yes, thought that of the Moto G - Thought I'd have another look at it since it was suggested.
Just had a look at the deal you posted - Zenfone 2, from reading the post, it looks like it would do the trick!
Now, I'll have a look at the Lg & 1+1…….
I'm thinking the LG, although sounds better - is out of my price range though. Just had a look at 1+1 - same thing, really didn't want to spend more than $200-$250ish.
Gee, who would of thought buying a new phone would be so long winded & it's starting to feel like a drama - I could keep my iPhone (3 years old), but no doubt, it will die at some point……
