This is my first post :) Just picked up 1 in Nrth Nsw. It's the same deal as last year, seen here, but I couldn't see a way to repost someone's old deal that has come up again. So copied most of it :)

Also comes with 1 year digital sub to taste.com.au magazine.

Cheers,

  • Why they can't just put one gigs extra ram and increase the price by $5/10? People won't complain I think.

    • Probably has something to do with shaving every single cent they can to make their product more appealing on the price point - some consumers when comparing tablets will look at the dollar value - oh this tablet is $100 and this one is $99 .. I'll take the $99 one cause its a dollar cheaper and then get all excited thinking they are such thrifty shoppers having saved $1!

Only informed customers will compare specs, speeds, capabilities with less regard for the price, but it has been my experience that generally people will look at the price when dealing within the market segment we are examining (selling tablets at the supermarket).

Just my two cents based on observing non technical people making purchasing decisions.

      • "then get all excited thinking they are such thrifty shoppers having saved $1!"

Isn't this a standard practice on this very site? ;)

      • Rest assured though, that with Windows 8.1's awesome memory management; and the fact that the storage is a form of SSD, I've never experienced an slowdowns on my two.

One is a car PC full of MP3's and Seasons of shows; the other is a bedside 'life updater' emails, skype, weather, etc.

It's because the OEM doesn't want to pay for the Windows 8 license. Some of the requirements for a device to qualify to use Windows 8 with Bing is for it to have only 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

    • You also have to consider the CPU type that they have used. The Atom Z3735 comes in 4 different models; D, E, F and G. Each has different features. The G model for example only supports 1GB of RAM.

I bought this little device last December and it's still working great. The IE is usable and I disabled the windows update. I believe it's a great RDP tool and an be hooked into a TV or monitor easily. Ideal for a thin PC or just video player.

The only downside is, the screen res is a little bit low but we can plug it into a TV, can't we?

  • Would you be able to put Win10 on it?

    • Yes, but limited space and slow.

'Pendo Pad 7 Full Windows 8.1 with Bing.'
Whew! Was worried sick that Bing would not be included. As you were everyone.

Updated deal info to remove the bing thing :)

I had just copied and pasted from the old deal info.

Imho, google rules. But altavista was the 1st ruler :P

      • +2

        hehe. was just kidding about.
It just reminds me of that remark they make when you get a new PC. 'Yeah, I use Internet Explorer……its great for downloading Chrome.'

        • -3

          Actually its nothing like that.

        • The only similarity is the use of humerous sarcasm.

    • +1

…Windows 8.1 with Bing is the name of the OS that gets supplied with these cheap tablets.
The only difference between Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 with Bing is the fact that With Bing version comes with Bing App and has the default search engine as Bing, I believe.

      • there appears to be more to it than that. i got the pipox7 with 8.1-bing and found that certain features/settings have been disabled… not sure if just the pipox7 or whether the bing factor

        • +1

          AznMitch is correct.

        • I think that's the optimisation for Baytrail devices (which would be same on both 8.1 and with Bing). Though, it may also be manufacturer's doing, but I seriously doubt that.

        • Any examples of a disabled feature? First i've hard of it.

        • @MasterScythe:
          "First i've hard of it."
          Because it's not true.

      • They basically get to distribute the Bing version at no cost to manufacturer if I remember correctly.

Some discussion on the whirlpool forums for the 8" version, Whirlpool thread

Just search for "Windows 10" on the page.

I think the main problem is though that the install is so big for the technical preview that it's pretty hard to get it working easily.

Imho, best option is to leave it at 8.1, and install classic shell, and change res to the slightly smaller default res, and up text to 125%. Add in some cccp codec drivers, and viola, a quick and dirty way of running any video file on your tablet :)

    • Microsoft is planning on making Windows 10 Mobile available on most of these devices. This is why they've made the licenses free or $25 for manufacturers.

The technical preview is too large because it doesn't use WIMBOOT like these tablets do. It compresses the system files down for these cheap devices.

      • +1

Compressed WIMBoot image is around 5-6G, for a 16G eMMC that has 14.8G actual storage. 14.8 - 6 - msr - uefi partition - windows directory will probably leave you 3G that is barely enough other than just vanilla windows, not even doing updates yet.

Moreover win 10 on Z3735 is really slow.

Like @metalslaw said stick with win 8.1 and the device well be really fast and responsive.

        Source: personal build experience.

        • +1

That's why I said Windows 10 Mobile, which will be released sometime after Windows 10. I would think that it would be optimized for this kind of hardware like Windows 8.1

  • Nice lil' tablet as-is. 1gb/16gb works fine for out & about usage.
The screen was easily broken so be careful not to knock. Bought hdmi adapter and runs well on 22" monitor but mobility gone, so bought a 8" Momo8w which is good except touchscreen had to be disabled as I think they need to write a proper driver, not sure but it's mouse only tablet.

  • Has HDMI and USB-OTG, so might make a decent home-theatre PC. Can you install OpenElec on this?

Wouldn't the 1280->1024 pixel downscaling make Windows a bit awful on the built-in screen?

  • Did anyone ever workout whether a powered USB strip allows you to charge and use USB drives at the same time?

  • +3

Or you could get the 8" version which has the following advantages over the 7"version
    - bigger and higher res screen 1280 x 800
    - front & back 2MP cameras
    - double battery capacity
    - better processor

Judging from Targets website that cashback is not valid until 21/5:

To receive your $25 cash back follow the below steps:
      1. Buy a Pendo Pad Windows 8GB Quad Core Tablet that comes with Microsoft Office 365 between 21/5/15 and 05/07/15

      • You could possibly use it with the AMEX Target online cashback?

      • Great pickup, jbronko.
        Good to know

  • Take note the 7" screen is pretty terrible and Coles wont accept returns for change of mind.

  • How much warranty on the chuwi ?

  • Currently 5 at Coles Boronia (3155). From what I could see, 4 black and 1 pink. I've been using one for a few months and love it.

  • sit and wait for Atom X3 / X5 powered tablets at the same price 2nd half of this year

    • +1

I somehow doubt that. Intel have subsidised the last gen Atom CPUs a lot to get them to be used in mobile devices, I've heard rumours that that they are planning on reducing the subsidies (at least what I've heard was, they cannot keep up with this kind of pricing).

Though, I seriously hope for cheap Windows tablets to be available this year as well.

      http://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-4-billion-loss-mobile…

      • i doubt they can reduce the subsidies
Look what Microsoft IS doing right now?
giving away windows 8.1 Bing and office 365 free
Thats exactly what Microsfot Should have done in the first year of Win 8 release, but they didnt
Same apply to Intel, they can afford to blow money against QuarComm, hey had to have a presence and wait for Windows devices to catch up in software.

Given these are desktop level X8664 chips capable of running software ARM systems cant, the advantage will surface if the race continues, the only worry is not Intel but AMD, which miss the boat all together.

I would cut further if i am Intel to ensure Atom X series strikes deep in to QuarComm markets, if market share is key in the game of future dominance.

All these cutting back thing is just long wind to ensure some sales before old generation being replaced.

        • The problem is, it has costed them over $4 billion to keep the subsidies last year.

Besides, the bigger problem is, for them to do this indefinitely, they are allowed to do this because they are the underdogs in the mobile CPU market, they cannot keep this up since I think after certain percentage of market share, if you are caught with this kind of behaviour (selling under your cost price), it's punishable as it is an anti-competitive behaviour.

Qualcomm has taken a big hit with their latest failure, Snapdragon 810, as well.

        • @AznMitch:
I don't know what 810 was doing at all, so yeah it may give Intel a chance but really, all these chipsets are now over powered, no one needs a 2.X ghz hex core nonsense and 4G ram to run an OS that is so fill of junk thanks to various operators and hardware vendor.

just like PC before it, hardware is way ahead of software… again!

  • Hi all, can you remove windows off this thing and install Android instead?

I'm an i-Native, so have no clue on such matters. I do like Android, but windows isn't going to happen, cheers

    • +1

You can run Android "within" Windows, but performance will suck.

There are projects like androidX86 but I doubt there's compatibility with this device.

Short answer, no well or easily.

      • Thanks!! I'm passing on this then

    • Just buy the Android version of the tablet then, it's even cheaper than this.

      • Where? I actually thought same price? Definitely don't want anything lower specced than this

  • purchased this to replace the kids tablet (Surface 2RT), god the screen is so bad compared to the surface. We also have the media pad 7 which was on sale at coles for ~29$ or 39$ had a better lcd viewing.

    • did you just compare a $700 tablet to an $89 tablet? I think you just won muppet of the year. Congrats.

      • the surface 2rt was 299$ not 700$. And yes the screen is really bad compared to the media pad 7

        • i've seen the pendo in Dick Smith and it is bad. There is a really bad reflection.

        • @adam149:

I've never had problems with reflection, the screen issues I have are with viewing angles. I just found an angle that worked and stuck with it.

For <$100, I find it hard to complain.

  • Not a bad Windows 8 tablet for $89. It's no competitor to the Surfwce of course, but usable enough.

  • 89 for a full windows tablet Neat!

  • Just a caveat for those wanting a cheap tablet for reading ebooks or for watching movies while traveling. I bought the Pendo 10" (it was the quad core 8gb RAM one) and the viewing angle was beyond awful. Like, when I read something with black letterbox, I couldn't angle it so both sides were true black. If I angled it up, the bottom black bar would go grey, (same with any text or any image with black on it) and if I angled it down, the top bar would go grey. I couldn't angle it so both bars were black and I could see everything in the same color without distortion. It started to hurt my eyes (I have good eyes, btw) so I returned it. Mine was so bad, I actually thought it may be faulty. I mean, I didn't expect that good a viewing angle for the price— but I thought I'd at least be able to hold it at one good angle without straining my eyes or losing the color on the screen.

That said it was a nice little pad otherwise, fast and seemed relatively reliable. If I was not relying on the screen and wanted it to plug into other things I'd have kept it.
