Clothes -- what do you skimp on and what do you spend on?

So Winter is upon us and for some it's a good time to re-fit the wardrobe.

What are your standards when it comes to purchasing clothing?

I've listed a few clothing types and my hard 'limits' on these type of clothing

  • Suits - Sort of Skimp ($300 max)
  • Formal coats - Spend ($150 max, although I do own one $250 Country Road jacket)
  • Casual Jackets - Skimp ($50 max)
  • Shoes - Sort of Spend ($60 max)
  • Casual Jeans - Skimp ($45 max)
  • Casual Shirts - Skimp ($20 max)
  • Chinos - Skimp ($25 max)
  • Ties - Skimp ($10 max)
  • Belts - Skimp ($10 max)
  • Sunglasses - Skimp ($25 max)
  • Watches - Skimp ($40), unless it's a smartwatch, in which case it's ($150 max, I have a Pebble)
  • Hats — Skimp ($0) I don't wear a hat,
  • Haircuts — skimp ($22~24) depending on time and plce

and finally

  • Undies / Socks - Skimp, usually as cheap as I can find.

What are your standards, ladies / gents?

Comments

  • Suits - Skimp ($300 max) - Hate wearing suits. Have a few though.
Formal coats - Spend ($150 max) - Have a few blazers. Not something I wear regularly.
Casual Jackets - Spend ($250 max) - Good jackets last ages.
Shoes - Spend ($250 max) - Work shoes are quite important as you're spending 8+ hrs in them. Having a good wardrobe also requires a good collection of shoes.
Casual Jeans - Spend ($200 max; normally $112ish) - Good comfortable jeans that could technically substitute work trousers. ;) My cheat at work.
Casual Shirts - Skimp ($70 max)
Chinos - Skimp ($100 max) - Country Road has some decent ones. Else, dark jeans++
Ties - Spend ($40 max) - With ties, you get what you pay for. I haven't seen good quality ties that are also inexpensive. Unless you buy them overseas. :)
Belts - Skimp ($80 max) - Leather lasts really long.
Sunglasses - Spend ($250 max) - Good sunnies are worth it. This is mostly a one-time buy. Lasts ages.
Watches - Spend ($??? ) - I love watches and would eventually love to own a few "masterworks". I have a couple of workhorses that have lasted ages Casio G-shocks.
Hats — Skimp ($0) - Yeah likewise mate.
Haircuts — skimp ($20~24) - Sounds about right.
Undies / Socks - ($xx) - not too fussed. Decent quality fabric should suffice. Get a bulk pack. :)

      This thread sprang to mind.

      • Lol. I wouldn't really wear a bag o' rags.

Probably should have elucidated. When I was younger, I used to buy bulk packs of CK from ASOS. The quality was quite meh. So now I just pick up bulk packs of bonds from target.

      • Hahahaha :) You made me laugh out loud.

Suits - Sort of Skimp ($300 max)
Semi/Formal coats - Sort of skimp (100+ leather jacket
Outdoor jackets - Spend >$500, I have a variety of soft/hardshell jackets and pullovers. Plan to upgrade a couple
Shoes - Sort of Spend to skimp. A couple $100 pairs that last years ($60 max)
Casual Jeans - Spend to skimp A few $80+ pairs that last years
Casual Shirts - Skimp ($20 max)
    Ties - Skimp ($20 max)
    Belts - Skimp ($20 max)
    Sunglasses - None
Watches - plan to buy a $2000+ watch
    Hats — Skimp ($0) I don't wear a hat,
Haircuts — skimp, cut it myself.

I tend to buy durable functional stuff that last ages. They aren't trendy and are extremely simple looking and style neutral.

Nobody wants to read this, really. But the cheaper the better for me. About the only thing I like to spend more on is jackets, knitwear or shoes. I find when I buy cheap alternatives of these, they don't really last, or they look really really bad. Except fashion sneakers. Fashion sneakers I tend to buy from H&M or Rubi or something. Sports sneakers I like to buy name brand, just for comfort, but I don't like to spend more than $100.

I don't like to spend a lot on jeans, t-shirts, cardigans/shrugs, accessories, underwear and socks. I used to shop for clothes in mid-range stores, (Target, Sussan, Jeanswest, Sportsgirl, Esprit, Myer) etc… but discovered Best and Less the other day, (never used to go in) and I picked up the best black jeans, and a really nice shirt for under 20 dollars for both, as well as slippers and socks, and it was kind of enlightening. Then I was looking all over the place for yoga pants in Target but by chance found the best pair in Big W for $15. Since then I've definitely become a low-end shopper. I only buy from mid range places when things are clearanced.

  • I tend to keep wearing something until it tears, so some of my work clothes have been with me the last 3 years. I also try to do a big wardrobe update when I do go and shop, spending maybe 500-800 once every two years.

Suits - generally $250, once splurged on a made to measure for $600, and I was impressed.
    Semi/Formal coats - 0 - don't wear em.
Formal shirts, pants - $50 max
Outdoor jackets - $150 max. I have 2 and they're both from overseas. Should also last years.
Shoes - Sort of Spend to skimp. A couple $100 pairs that last years ($60 max)
Jeans - 2 pairs from Jayjays @ $50 each, long lasting
Casual pants - $50 max, I think I have a thing for trousers below $50
    Casual Shirts - $20 max)Ties - Skimp ($20 max)
Belts - $40 max - I only wear belts at work and so they tend to be the double-sided leather ones.
    Sunglasses - None
Watches - $400 watch I've been wearing for 6 years, and plan to keep wearing another 14.
    Hats — none
Haircuts — $10 each, once every two months
Underwear: I've moved to cheapos, but used to buy those $20 pieces

I buy most of my clothes from ozsale.

I have a priority membership so i access the sales at 8pm, non priority access it the following day at 6am

90% are designer for dirt cheap prices as i tend to buy only from the clearance part of ozsale . However, you have to check everyday.

Best bargains i got till now was crocs crossbands for $10, Leather cowhide jacket for $40, and esprit slim fit cotton chino's for $5 (i grabbed 6 of those)

I honestly have clothes that would last me for 4 - 5 years all cheap

    • Is OzSale actually any good? I get spam emails from them every day and I've written them off as a scam.

      • +2

~ 3 years ago when they didnt own their own warehouse, it was a bit messy.

But since they own a warehouse now, and they do all the packaging themselves, they have improved.

I have made ~ 12 orders in the last 3 month and all have arrived as described.

  • Casual Jackets - Spend (Tend to be $100-$200)
Shoes - Spend! (Size 15 Feet, if I can find shoes that I like I tend to buy them no matter what the price is….) Most expensive pair is a few hundred for dressy work shoes that I spent bloody weeks trying to source… I'm still really happy with them so it was a good purchase in my book.
Casual Jeans - Skimp ($50 max)
    Casual Shirts - Skimp-ish ($50 max)
Business Shirts - Medium ($50 ones from Uniqlo are really great, 100% cotton and 1000x better than the $10 ones I used to get on sale at BigW which lasted like 2 months…)
    Chinos - Medium ($50 max)
    Belts - Medium ($40 max)
    Undies- Skimp (BigW, $10)
Socks- Again, big feet, best pair I have are $15 a pair, and I bloody love them, but I can't find them is Aus. Otherwise BigW and i jsut have to keep trying until I find a pair that actually fit. Then they wear out really quickly…
Sunglasses - Spend for sure ($60-$150- good sunnies are pretty important for your eyes and I have a huge family history of (profanity) up eyes due to sun exposure)
Watches - Spend (~$400), I really like watches.
Haircuts — Medium ($40) I've been going to the same place for 15 years, I don't really trust anywhere else… Anyone know great places in Melbourne for men's cuts that do a good job on curly hair?

All up I spend a bit on clothes, but I mitigate the cost to other areas.

  • +1

    I avoid fashion treads.

I look for discontinued performance clothes @~70% off.

  • my current favourite suit was a $15 op-shop find. fits perfectly, looks great. had it for 5 years (admittedly i don't need to wear a suit that often).

    jocks - kmart
socks - get them for christmas / stocked up on $3 Explorers a couple of years ago
haircut - haven't had one in 3 years.
shirts - wait for myer post-sale for additional 75% off reduced stock
jeans/trousers - buy them up overseas
tshirts - still wearing Ozsale essentially free tshirts from 2 years ago
watch - dodgy knock off from some china website ~$20 every 2 years.
shoes/sneakers - bought a nice pair of good shoes 6 years ago. pick inexpensive skateshoes from deals here ~$10 a pair.

don't mind me as I slither out of this man cave

    • Aren't we about 50/50 male to female here?

  • Hey not sure if anyone has mentioned this already, and but a good leather belt will last you your whole life. I bought one back in 2000 and remember telling some friends at the time that it was the most expensive clothing item I'd ever bought (70 bucks, I was young) but I still have it today and wear it daily.

Besides that go for a nice wool in a suit. I have found that even if you don't buy a known label, they will usually take more care making a wool suit and you will get as good a product as that brand ever makes. Cheaper materials and there just may not be the same level of respect given to the garments during manufacture. That's just my theory anyway, besides that I think wool is better all round.

    • I agree. I bought a black leather belt from RM Williams, made in Australia. Good quality and value. It will last me decades.

      • Sheesh, 1 year old and still commenting

        • Oh wow how embarrassing. I had thought this forum post was still new after doing a search.

        • @jacknthebeanstalk: at least the information is up to date

Suits - (Skimp) own 2 that I both got on a good deal for around $300 each
    Formal coats - Spend ($250+)
    Casual Jackets - Spend ($100-150)
Shoes -Spend (around $100) decent Nike runners, and other formal shoes/sneakers
Jeans - Spend ($100+) the quality I find is way way higher and they just fit alot better
    Casual Shirts - Spend ($100)
    Chinos - Spend ($80-100)
Ties - Have a nice skinny black silk tie that cost about $100 that's lasted forever
    Belts - Spend ($50)
    Sunglasses - Spend ($180-200)
Watches - Spend ($500+), got to have a nice watch to match everything else
Hats — Skimp ($0) Never wear
Haircuts — skimp ($10) Local vietnamese place

This has made me realise I have a bit of a problem and should probably be paying more for a haircut.

I do some modelling (?) work for an 'exclusive boutique' on a casual basis.
I mostly get asked to do bridal photoshoots and get paid a ridiculous amount of money to get all dolled up and have my pictures taken. It is a nice change from my usual day job , where I get paid peanuts and often get taken for granted or treated like shit.

I also get 50% off their designer collections. I only ever buy items which are on sale, discontinued or end of line . So I usually end up paying only about 25%-30% of the original RRPs.

I spend part of my paycheck on buying some key pieces:
-a new bag , coat, pair of boots or jacket for myself
-Jeans, chinos or jacket for JJB

and then we mix and match with $5- $10 stuff on special from Target, Kmart, Big W , Valleygirl,DFO,2XUoutlet ..etc JJB gets a clothing allowance from work.So all his bespoke suits, tailored shirts and business shoes get paid for by work.

As for the kids, we have a lovely neighbour who enjoys sewing dresses, jackets, blazers, shorts, chinos…etc for them. She's a really good seamstress and I've noticed that the kids take extra care of those clothes because they know how much work went into making them. She only ever charges us for the price of the materials used.So we will often buy her some fresh fruits and vegetables and the kids will make a batch of their special nutella brownies to take over as a thank you.

All of the kids other clothes and shoes are bought on sale from cotton on kids, kmart, target..etc

Underwear is the only thing I splurge on. No one in our family likes wearing them.So if we find a brand or design that they like, I'll buy it , regardless of whether they are on special or not. I can't quite resist pretty lingerie but I do try to wait for a sale.

    • what's the boutique's name…might come in handy one day ;)?… (might even get a discount)

      • If she told you , it would be too easy to discover her real identity. All the others look like models trying to sell wedding dresses. She's the only one who looks like a real bride: sweet and virginal.

        • +1

          sweet and virginal.

          That's a little creepy O.O

        • @wicket1120:
Don't get all worked up wicket. I'm sure he meant to say sweet and vaginal

  • Daiso for socks
bonds for undies but soon to change to after this thread.
2 suits for work$500 each discounted from 750-800ish
    casual t-shirts $10-$30
    Collared smart casual shirts $40-$80
    Business shirts up to $30
Business slacks wait till big sales are on.
    Work shoes 50-130
    runners $80
    Gym gear $40 per item

After reading this thread, I feel like I am letting the team down!

Best cheap buys were from h&m,uniglo and parkson while overseas.

  • I skimp on practically anything, EXCEPT for formal clothing and suits. Definitely never skimp out on suits. Very important not to.

  • +4

This is a good topic. I used to be really poor as a young adult and just purchased ugly, poorly fitting clothing from K-Mart/Target/BigW/Lowes. Now I am certainly far from rich and cannot afford brand names new, but I have acquired a decent wardrobe from Ebay (used or New with Tags), Amazon (The Mountain tshirts + Levi pants which are much cheaper than in Oz, and they had a 20% off code for subscribing last year), Macys (on sale), Aldi (winter gear and socks), and Asos ( 50%+ plus sales of course + cashback). I like Asos slim cut attire, and a few days ago received a Harris Tweed woolen pea coat and a 50% woolen/50% synthetic winter coat from the most recent Asos sale. I feel really cold in winter (despite living in Brisbane) so woolen clothing is great.

My only name brand items are Ebay purchases (Missoni and Ermenegildo Zegna silk ties for about $20), and some Jhayne Barnes and Etro shirts… Good quality as a decent price is my motto now. Under $25 for tshirts, under $50 for trousers and shirts, and under $100 for jackets and coats.

  • +1

I seem to have bought have a single super expensive (by my standards) item from most things listed but otherwise stick to a limit - I'll pay up if it's super wonderful and I've given it some thought.

-Suits - Nope. Mmaybe $70 for a nice suit-ish-looking jacket?
    -Formal coats - 60$
-Casual Jackets - up to $60 if its amazing but normally 30$
    -Shoes - flats 15$ / boots $40 / joggers 70$
-Casual Jeans - $40? haven't bought a pair in years
-Casual Shirts - $10 maybe $15 if its nice
    -Chinos - what is this?
    -Ties - $10
    -Belts - 30$
-Sunglasses - was $20 but bought a $200 pair ages ago and never needed another since.
    -Watches - NA
-Hats — 25$ I have two at this price that are over 10 years old and still good.
-Haircuts — cut my own hair for at least a decade now.
-Undies / Socks - 7$/80$ for undergarments. $7 ones I only buy one brand and they're always this price so these get stocked up every sale and bought on rewards cards. $3 for 10 pairs sale stocked up and never bought again.
    -Shorts - 10$
    -Skirts - 30$
    -Gloves - 15$
    -Scarves - 30$
    -Dresses - 60$ normally $30

Might add (though it's partially more of a hobby) I normally find final clearances racks but most things are normally not in my size so I get larger sizes and then take them in myself

2 things I've always wished I knew how to do :

  • Female uni student, on clinical placement (require business-type clothes), living at home but saving $$$ for travel.
Shop predominately at Kmart, Big W, Cotton on, Dotti, Valleygirl etc. Sometimes Myer/Portmans/more expensive shops but the item would usually be on sale or at DFO. I've bought heaps of my clothes overseas - US, Japan, Europe.

Formal dress - for ball/very special occasion $100, for cocktail party/wedding $50 max
    Casual dress - $30 max
    Semi/Formal coats - <$100 - if buying overseas I wouldn't spend more than $50
Formal shirts, pants - $50 max for good black dress pants, $30 (but usually $20) for nice top for clinical placement
Outdoor jackets - $100 max. All from overseas. Will be buying one from Uniqlo while in Melbourne though.
Shoes - usually buy good pair of flats that are comfortable (max $50 on sale) and then cheaper everything else (Kmart/BigW/payless shoes. Gym shoes ~$100.
Gym clothes - usually <$30, but recently bought some Nike tights for $50 on wiggle that are amazing
Jeans - all my jeans are from overseas. $30 from Zara x 3, $15 from forever 21, $15 from H&M. Have been great so far!
    Casual Shirts - usually <$10
Sunglasses - usually ~$20 but my boyfriend recently bought me polarised raybans (they were an Ozbargain deal ;) ) which are amazing - think I'll be spending up on these in the future
Watches - $50-100 - got a nice skagen watch on COTD for $80.
    Haircuts — $25-30
Underwear: I love Kmart underwear, fits well and lasts a long time. Like cotton on body for nicer-looking underwear when they have good sale :)

I seem to have a lot of clothes that are reasonably cheap!

        Zara :)

      • From Zara in Greece, couldn't believe the price so I bought three pairs!

must admit that i am a bit of a label snob but at the same time a true ozbarginer so only when the price is right.

so i stock up and bulk buy overseas when on holiday (Vietnam and Thialand)or via online stores in the UK or USA (via hopshopgo)
I tend to make orders in the $300-$500 and buy for the whole family…a $500 order may incur $70-100 postage but on a big order that may only be $5 per item.

Suits, dont own as i dont wear
    for work clothing i buy….
work/casual shirts- $30.. usually outdoor/trekking type that dont need ironing….marmot, ex-officio, OR, haglofs
Pants- $30-50… surf or skate brand chinos or casual pants by the likes of DC, quicksilver and rip curl
Shoes- $20-30.. again surf/skate casual slip ons ….sanuk,DC,vans

Watches- up to $100…like my g-shocks but picked a cheap nixon and vestal watch when shopping on line.
Sunglasses- up to $40 … like watches, sunnies are another guilty pleasure…last bargin was some $25 Julbo`s
T-shirts- $20..surf n skate stuff but i tend to search out the less obvious brands and sublte designs…Arbor, plan B, enjoy, special blend
haircuts - not for years, the missus hacks into it once a month (i just mess it up with styling wax) and i number 2 shave the beard.
socks/underwear- $10… i used to buy cheap multi packs for this price now i shop around because as you get older you really appreciate some quiality jocks or merino wool socks…still dont pay over $10
    Belts - $10
Runners/trainers - $40..got quite a few pairs some for biking, gym pair, climbing approach shoes, skate shoes, never paid more than $40…brands like Teva, five ten, DC, globe

most of my wordrobe comes courtesy of ozbargin…catchoftheday, sportsdirect, chainreaction, torpedo7, backcountry, daddiesboardshop, level9, sierratrading. amazon

wish we had a TK Maxx here in Australia….anyone whos been to the UK will know what i mean

As an ozbargainer, I hang my head in shame as I write this. About 5, 6 years ago I went on a clothes buying binge, as a result I now own some very expensive items:

suits - bought about 6 suits, $1000-3000 each. A few sports jackets, $500-$1000 each. Most were from Harolds.

shoes - about 10 pairs of leather dress shoes from Bally Outlet, averaging $400 a pair. Later purchases include some Church's and Crocket Jones etc. All up about $7000.

knitwear - Various cashmere gloves and scarves from Scotland, bought online. Various wool and cashmere jumpers by Ralph Lauren Purple Label and other high end labels.

watches - 3 high end watches including a Rolex Datejust, and a low end Tag Heur, totalling about $20,000

underwear - I only wear Calvin Klein but I buy them online, and in bulk, about a couple of hundred dollars a years.

socks - don't really want to talk about socks, I have so many I've lost count, let's just say they were not cheap either.

haircut - this is probably the only thing I've been skimping on, about once a month I go to a Korean hairdresser, cost about $25.

I don't mean to brag and regret most of these purchases, even though I never pay retail but still I could have spent half or even one third of the money and the result would not have been very different. Since then I have thrown out or donated a lot of my "stuff" but I still feel I have too many things. I do not intend to buy any clothes again for a very long time and haven't in years.

    • No need to hang your head in shame.

I'm not as bad as you, see above, but good shoes are worth it. I have some Churches but no CJs.

And the Rolex is for life.

I don't tend to spend so much on Suits and Sports Jackets because suits no matter how $$$ go out of style after 3-4 years.

Shoes such as Churches and CJs, and Rolex never go out of style. Good shoes can be re-soled and last 20 years.

      • Thanks man, I just read your post and agree with all your points. Good shoes and watches are more "worth it" and have more utility, clothes on the other hand lose half of their value the moment you take them home and if they don't fit properly then tough luck (alterations sometimes just don't cut it, pun not intended).

Forgot to mention that I also own quite a number of dress shirts, about 20 was my last count, some of which were tailor made. These were in fact really good purchases in my opinion as they fit nicely and still look quite new after many many machine washes.

        • I think my clothes lose all of their value once I buy them.

Never sold my clothes before (usually give away my unworn pieces to someone I know) but I donate the ones in good condition that I don't wear anymore.

My Jermyn St dress shirts are generally good quality and never lose its shape. However they wear out on the pointy end of the collar and also where the French cuff sleeve is folded. Maybe I should wash them in the gentle cycle. It's such a waste to turn them into rags, but once they are worn that's it for them.

        • @JB1: A couple of my bespoke shirts are starting to fray as well around the collar, I used to dry clean them but have recently resorted to soak and machine wash. A gentler cycle would definitely help.

        • @citybargainhunter:

I think no matter now expensive the shirt it, it always frays around the collar as it's sharp. Just normal wear and tear.

Dry clean shirts? I don't think I've ever dry cleaned a shirt before! lol….. actually dry cleaning will shorten the lifespan of a shirt as it damages the material. Especially if they steam press by machine at high temperatures.

Maybe it's time for me to wash my shirts separately and use a gentle wash and spin dry at 400rpm rather than 1200rpm.

    • -1

Not saying spending that much on clothing is wrong because I do not scrimp on clothing, but your watch choice screams that you're all about conspicuous consumption (that said, I don't mind the Heuer Carrera Automatic). A Rolex is not high-end, nor is it that far off your 'low-end' Tag. It's popped out of a factory en masse with great marketing. A high-end watch is more the likes of Audemars Piguet, A Lange and Sohne or Ulysse Nardin.

As someone that has indulged in mid to high end automatic watches. A cheap casio g shock will keep better time and doesn't require servicing. You're justifying your watch's utility with cognitive dissonance…A lady will probably swoon over your Rolex more than my Glashutte though :p.

      What's your third watch?

      • +2

I don't really get the point of your comment. Do you get some sort of satisfaction by putting down other people's purchases, and want to demonstrate that you possess superior taste and more knowledge in watches? Unfortunately, I am afraid you have shown neither.

Conspicuous or not, it's a matter of opinion. To me, the Rolex Datejust is very understated and so do many other Rolex models. I agree with you on the point that Rolex is somewhat mass produced and has a lot of marketing hype around it, and it may not be in the same league as Patek or AP, but Rolex do make some good quality watches, it's just not in the same market as the brands that you mentioned.

I have many friends who are watch collectors and know a lot more about watches than myself and they all own at least one Rolex. To completely write off Rolex really just shows a lack of understanding about watches in general at best, or snobbery and immaturity at worst. This leads one to wonder what your age is, for I do not want to get into a debate with a 15 year old.

Now to answer your last question, my other two watches are IWCs.

        • 'For I do not want to get into a debate with a 15 year old' - haha sounding like that guess you wouldn't have to worry about 15 year old me accidentally bumping into your goofy 'understated' self having after work drinks and spilling your Corona on your Bally joints. My point was pretty evident. I'll bullet it:

          • Rolex is not high end like you stated.
          • Didn't write off Rolex, quite like the Milgauss actually. Not 'somewhat' mass produced. IS mass produced.
          • Agree. Rolex is in a different market. Your market. The finally I'm successful and making money gotta look like a Big 4/corporate drone/gotta fill out this TPS coversheet, gotta look professional market.
          • Asked for your third watch. Now you have a fourth. Probably a portofino.

And yes, I Agree, I did write you off, probably because I do think you come off tasteless and clueless. Judgement is but the human condition…it's ok though. I'm 15 right (great inference!)? When I'm more mature and older, I won't do it.

      • As a young adult who likes nice, simple watches, and owns a handful of Seikos and Casios, what would you recommend?

        • What's your budget?

        • @JB1:

          About $300 - 500?

        • @smileymiwo:

I should have asked, sports, i.e divers model or dress watch?

        • @JB1:

          Dress.

Depends. Mechanical, Automatic or Quartz, leather, mesh, nato, metal strap? What size do you like, give us an example of what you like the look of or tell us the actual Seiko and Casio you are wearing so we can get an idea. Mechanical you have to wind, automatics self wind as you wear it (and can be manually wound). Quartz are usually battery powered and keep the best time, but you have to change the battery in most. Automatics and mechanical I guess are fascinating if you have an appreciation of watch mechanics. They can last for a long time (I have an Omega speedmaster from the 70s that my father gave to me). My brother in law's father is also a watchmaker and I guess that is where my fascination of watches came from especially the hand-made ones. It is a craft.

Do not look down on Seiko like people do. They are a very reputable company. I have met people wearing $50K watches also rock a $200 Seiko diver and offer me stupid sums for the casio 5500 I was wearing. Sure it's ridiculous to spend this much to some and I wouldn't but that being said, to the average-joe these people do not look rich nor would they have a clue to what their watch is worth (coz it isn't a tag or a rolex), they are really, really into watches and can afford it and probably even own a loupe.

Ok for some ideas. I have a Seiko 5 (SNZG15J) automatic, Made in Japan that I got for $140… It keeps time very well for an auto and it's movement is very well regarded and very reliable. If you find that face too busy, then you may like say a Hamilton Jazzmaster or any of the Hamilton 'Khaki' field mechanical watches that you can get from around $300 - $600 if you are lucky (swiss movement/US made with the amount of jewels varying).

For a quartz with a battery, the Braun BN0021 and all it's variants have a very minimalist style for which they have won awards for. They kind of remind me of the Nomos by glashutte. Perhaps even check out Wenger.

You don't need to spend the world for a great watch, I usually just recommend avoiding brands like Gucci or Armani or Nautica when it comes to getting a proper watch and avoid something that's gaudy and actually suits you and your style. If you like the look of a Seiko or Citizen you see in Shiels then get it. Be careful though, you may find yourself extending your budget if you develop a taste.

edit: Ahh I see you just wrote dress. Prolly the jazzmaster is the most applicable.

        • @nerangsta:

Cheers for that, I've always been taught quality and reliability is king, and trying to fit that in with something that looks good.

        • @smileymiwo:

I'd look at the Seiko Sarb series, made in Japan for the Japanese market.

Better quality than the ones you can get in Australia (except for Grand Seiko), including better movements.

          http://c-watch.co.jp/ww/sarb065066.html

They come in metal bracelets and leather.

The Orient Bambino is excellent value also http://orientwatchusa.com/er24005w

Only downside to the Bambino is the glass isn't sapphire.

          All are automatics.

If you had $500, I'd spend it on a Sarb. Bracelets are more practical, but leather is more dressy.

        • @nerangsta:

What did you get offered for your casio 5500?

I know they have a following, but I just couldn't wear one without thinking I'm wearing a kid's or fashion watch.

They remind me of my primary school days when I was rocking a Casio F91w type watch! I bought 3 of my nephews their first watches- Casio F91w's for like AUD$18 each in a Malaysia department store. The F91w is also the #1 choice watch of terrorists.

        • @JB1:

I know what you mean, I've had a few jocks ask me what was up with the kids watch, which is funny because now you see them all rocking white roundface g shocks! Initially it felt like I was wearing a Ben-10 Device. Still kind of does but I don't really care haha. I bought it on holiday in Japan for $80AUD. 300 were made for a store there which I can't remember the name of right now (Tokyu hands maybe). It was the original black with red buttons colour way and the strap was laser etched by a Japanese artist with skulls and hearts etched onto it with "dead or love" written on it (ridiculous right!). It was just ubiquitously Japanese, Engrish and all! Tough as hell, I've worn it working on my car and doing other outdoorsy stuff, had a starter motor smash onto it and it still doesn't look banged up. I was offered $800. I declined. I love it too much. The automatic backlight is so handy.

Also bookmarked that site with your recommendations. Smileymiwo should give them some serious thought!

And no bull$hit, my total babe of a girlfriend wears that F91W watch, she bought it when I got my Casio for around $7!

          @nerangsta:

I paid more than double what your GF paid.. Seems I got ripped off!

$800?… my reply would be "where is your bank's nearest ATM" lol

I like the idea of a large watch collection, different watch for every occasion. But I'm not so keen on resetting the time on automatic watches, so really I wear my Rolex Submariner 90% of the time. I only wear my other 2 watches out of pity lol

Not sure why you got negged, spending money is not a crime if you can afford it. Sometimes being frugal makes one so parochial that it becomes an unhealthy obsession.

  • For good quality (plain belts) head to Sydney Haymarket Paddy's Markets. There is a bloke that makes his own belts and cuts them back to your size. He'll fit one of a few limited buckles or a buckle that you bring yourself. The best way for him to size you is to take a belt that you are getting rid of. He charges about $15. He uses good quality leather. He is in a small booth and no-one seems to have told him that he is not meant to smoke (he smokes like a chimney). A lot of the cheap belts are bonded leather which will chip of tear easily. The $10 ones may look good at first but you'll regret them after a while.

I don't have any suits, formal coats, ties or jeans.
I get a bit of work stuff paid for by work. Other work stuff I get is more decent quality and claim it on tax.
I have a few promo hats which I got from alcohol purchases or won at pub trivia.
I don't spend much on general casual wear, but I rarely find anything I like either. I'd happily spend little bit more on band merch clothing, though.
I spend a bit extra for shoes, underwear, socks for the comfort.
Old clothes just get retired to home/sleep wear.
I'm currently wearing some tracksuit pants that a visiting overseas friend left at our house over 15 years ago.

I skimp on everything - clothes aren't very important to me. I strive to be clean, comfortable and somewhat presentable. Brands aren't my thing.

  • +1

Seriously, I would prefer to work less, than own more. I have plenty of clothes that'll take me through the 10 year fashion cycle.

  • I skimp on basics, so underwear, plain tees, socks and such are mostly Bonds or Uniqlo.

Shirts and other incidentals I typically cap at $100 per item but if I see something I like, I do go over (more often than I'd like).

I do splurge on 'big' items. My favourite leather jacket is a Schott Perfecto that I spent close to $1000 on, but should last a lifetime, ditto with boots (can't put a price on good footwear). I'm a bit picky about blazers and sports coats because I'm not usually a suit person, and they've typically been around the $1000 mark. Not a label hound, but I do like me some Italian wool and cashmere. For bottoms, I've pretty much transitioned to selvedge and various pairs of Outliers like the slim dungarees(highly recommended!). I ride a motorbike though, so most of my last big purchases have been protective gear like a couple of Belstaff jackets (sh*t is expensive).

  • I hate the hassle of buying clothing. My very slim waist size doesn't help as most size pants are 32in and above and i am about a 28. I can't avoid skimping when i do come across the right size as they are far and between. Buying clothing is something i try to avoid. If i had to it would be some place conservative like Giordano. Envy people born with fashion sense as i have none at all.

As for me, I'm a really short guy (165cm) so everytime I buy trousers from an Australian store, I need to get them altered otherwise the legs are too long for me. So I need to take into account the cost of getting them altered as well when purchasing.

UK clothing on the other hand seems to cater for short guys so no alterations needed. Thank god for online shopping.

      • +2

Consider Uniqlo. They offer in-store free resizing on trousers, even those purchased online.

      • +1 same here. Short and stocky, so I have the same issue with shirts. :(

  • I invest in high quality pieces as I look after and wear my clothes for years and years. Often 7 years plus. This also encourages me to stay fit as replacing my wardrobe would cost a LOT of money :)

Having said that I am a bargain hunter and only buy items when on sale and if they are value for money.

    • I mean honestly you're not buying the Pebble for a watch, more for wearing tech.

      • You can still make a statement with your Pebble watch — just skin it and throw in some leather bands. It looks pretty rad once you've accessorised it — the vanilla Pebble is just awful looking.
