    Good deal. I'd go for this if I didn't already have a 970 - I got FC4 with mine.
Love these bundled deals. The new Witcher looks good.
    Thanks OP.

    • +1

Buy a second one for SLI :).

      • I've haven't kept up to date with the latest graphics cards and all, but does Sli give you double the performance?

        • +2

No it doesn't. Diminishing returns means there is no chance of double the performance. However it will in some cases get you 75% of the way but it'll vary on a lot of things.

It will definitely give better performance though.

      • -5

The 970 has a memory issue where the last 500mb slows down the card dramatically. If you use it in SLI it compounds the issue as it has to use all the memory from the first card before it uses the memory from the 2nd card. To find out more info, check out this link - http://wccftech.com/nvidia-geforce-gtx-970-memory-issue-full…

BUYER BEWARE when purchasing 970 cards as they all inherent this design flaw.

        • +5

No it does not slow down the card dramatically. Stop being dramatic.

How about reading your own article that you link before saying things?

        • +4
        • -1

You have to be pushing your card to the max in 4k before you even get to 3.5GB.

        • +9

I'm pretty sure you're wrong. SLI does not double your vram, it mirrors your vram, so vram usage on the second card will be the same as on the first card. Hence, having sli 970s does not 'compound the issue' as the vram on the first card does not have to be 100% utilised before the vram on the second is touched; it just doesn't work that way.

As someone who owns SLI 970s, for me it came down to one simple question: how many times will I be in a scenario where 3.5gb of vram is not enough, but 4gb is perfectly fine? This would rarely ever happen, and when it does you can bet that 4gb won't be enough very soon after that (for max settings at least). Given that the 980 has only a 500mb lead on the 970, for me it didn't justify the big difference in cost for a two card setup, and in my opinion sli 970s have amazing performance for the price.

        • +1

As others have said, SLI only mirrors the VRAM and hence you still have that 0.5 GB VRAM with slower access than the faster 3.5 GB. Even with the flaw, chances are you won't even feel that slowdown unless you're running Shadow of Mordor at ultra with the HD texture pack at 4K and quite frankly, if you want to run your games at 4K at ultra settings you wouldn't look at a 970. Jay on YouTube showed that most games won't be utilising this part of the VRAM over here:

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6k55epUBCE

Having said that, I still think it was poor form from Nvidia but just not as bad as many made it out to be.

        • Comment full of falsehoods aside, this sentence is quite a beautiful screw up of the English language:

BUYER BEWARE when purchasing 970 cards as they all inherent this design flaw.

Does he mean this design flaw is inherent in all 970 cards? Or that they all inherit this design flaw?

        • @pawan1993:

"you won't even feel that slowdown unless you're running Shadow of Mordor at ultra with the HD texture pack at 4K"

I managed to get the slowdown/exceeded 3.5gb while only doing 1080p………..

        • @chris24803:

Lol how many times does a graphic card deal goes up and the community have to re-explain the SLI thing again to the nubs…

As for the 3.5gb issue, there are many websites that explained that the extra 0.5gb is really not that important at all less u are pushing resource hogging games like witcher or skyrim to 4k@max setting. That being said, 970 is the best bang for buck if you want something close to 980 but pay half the price.

        • @johnno07: He made a typo, big deal. You are very pedantic about your grammar.

        • @The Land of Smeg: Chill out, big guy. I just thought the stuff up was linguistically interesting.

      • +1

Not sure who negged you. Must be the dude that is claiming that the memory issue slows down the card "dramatically".

SLI is great. Been using my 670 SLI and still going strong.

        • SLi is awful. I have no end of issues with my dual GTX295's & my dual GTX590's.

When it's running SLi reigns supreme, but most games have no end of issues to hammer out first. I've always had an SLi machine since they were first available and would never recommend it unless a person has time & knowledge (or willingness to learn).

  • +2

Not the best deal unless you live in Melbourne or Perth. The gigabyte G1 is only $20 more after shipping at MSY and that is considered the better card.

    • -2

I would buy Asus everytime over Gigabyte. The Asus cooling is FAR superior.

      • +1

You still use fans for cooling?
        http://bit.ly/1J1RUff

        • What is the problem with that? I have the money for liquid cooling but the cost that is associated is not worth it.

        • +3

@Letrico: (i think he was joking)

        • Does this work well? Can I just put my PC parts into a fish tank of water?

        • +2

@marquise: That's not water, it would be mineral oil (doesn't conduct electricity). Basically just acts like a massive heat sink. It does keep the parts cool pretty effectively but only if you keep the oil cooled well.

It is really only done for show, since the oil can get dirty over time, it's a pain in the ass to maintain, and any parts that have been used in oil really can't be cleaned and used in air again.

        • I thought the PSU had to be outside of the oil?

        • @Alzori: Hmmm maybe hydroponic soil will work better

        • @theguyrules: The only thing you can't put underwater are devices that depend on mechanically moving parts - hard drives, optical drives etc. SSDs and PSUs are fine. Fans are fine too, as long as they have the torque to move through the oil.

@bargainhunter: An oil cooled PC does still use fans and a radiator for cooling. You have to get dissipate the heat from the oil somehow! :)

All said and done - I can't see myself EVER doing a mineral oil cooled PC - it's just not worth the incredible hassle and maintenance.

        • +1

@johnno07: Also don't put rubber in the mineral oil as it will stiffen and break off creating debris

        • MSI is sexier than my girlfriend

          If I have one

      • Asus cooling is quieter but not more effective. The GB BIOS can be easily modified to fix the fan speeds.

      • +1

IIRC the Gigabyte Windforce cooler is the only heatsink that doesn't run fans at idle.
This article seems to confirm this:
        http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/asus_geforce_gtx_970_st…

        • I think you mean the Gigabyte is the only one that DOES run fans at idle.

      • It's not even as simple as "one is better than the other". There are trade offs depending on your circumstances. e.g. I have a mid tower case, the gigabyte one doesn't fit, the Asus one (among others) does. Sure I could buy a new case, but that takes money and effort…

  • +1

    4GB??? HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    • +25

To expand a little on this comment, for people that are rabidly obsessed with all things graphics cards:

There's been a bit of controversy about the GTX 970 after it was discovered that although is technically has 4GB of ram, it can only make use of 3.5GB in many circumstances (am glossing over lots of details etc, for a detailed explanation read here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/8935/geforce-gtx-970-correctin… )

The reality is though its still a great card, and 99% of people wouldn't even know about the memory 'issue' Just something to keep in mind though.

      • +12

Thank you for adding some intelligence.

    • Yeah, 4GB is for suckers. Get a K80 ;-)

    • To be fair its all over the disclaimer if you click the link. Even tell you what speeds is throttled at the last 500mb.

Its still a great card. I got my MSI gaming (marginally better) for $447 delivered so think that's a much better deal. If only I bought two at that price..

  • +2

ugh! So tempting! Must.. not.. buy.. wait.. till EOFY sales and R9 release…

    • +5

Hang in there. I'm in the same boat. Ozbargain encourages jumping on any good deal but… must hold… out until… better deal. EOFYS is sure to beat even this.

    • +4

Same here man. After getting GTA V, my GTX 580 just doesn't cut it anymore.
      Now I'm after a 970, preferably a Gigabyte G1 970.
GTA is gonna be an expensive game after all this….

      • -2

It's going to be worth every cent when you consider how many feminazis you'll be annoying by playing a GTA.

  • +1

OP, I just bought the Philips 4k 40" from you last week deal, and it's an amazing monitor. Now you're offering this deal? you're sending me broke :)….
BTW, when will this deal end?

  • How easy (or hard) is it to replace the graphics card in my PC if I wanted to upgrade (am having issues withe Battlefield Hardline)?

    • Provided you have a decent power supply and motherboard, easy.

    • +1

Very straight forward if your board is compatible. Use au.pcpartpicker.com to confirm compatitibilty. Also CPU-Z is an easy way to find out the make and model of your mobo.

And as above that you've enough juice in your PSU.

    • Depends on your pc. If it's a component bases box where you can swap full sized cards and parts or if it's a small form factor box or a all in one pc where you will be limited on what you can upgrade.

  • -5

I would never go back from Nvidia to AMD. For anyone, I guess both brands are good, but if you are using OSX or Linux, you have much better compatibility with Nvidia.

Also most games are optimized for Nvidia + Intel. I played Rift on dual Opteron and 5770, and I had a crappy FPS (~8). with my Xeon + 660GTX Ti, I have 60 FPS. It depends on the game of course.

AMD is better for electricity consumption.

    Sum-up:
Windows: both good, with OSX or Linux go Nvidia.

    • +4

AMD is better for electricity consumption

errr.. no, they're not. They're worse on both CPU and GPU fronts.

      • +3

Yeah that's true AMD is worse than NVIDIA when it comes to power consumption and heat.

      • +6

I think that was meant as, it is better at consuming electricity.

      • I haven't checked since I bought my last graphic card. I am surprised, as they based their marketing on that, but I trust you on that.

I remember they used to switch off the GPU in idle mode to save 90W/hour…

I guess it changes all the time!

        • +1

AMD is power hungry, noisy and cheap.

        • @Letrico:

AMD are noisy? That is a silly comment. Noisy would be Gigabyte, or ASUS, or MSI, or any other manufacturer that releases their own cooling system.

        • +1

@FabMan: There is such a thing as reference cards and reference coolers, which are AMD design and spec.

        • @TheContact:

True, but the comment was a very blanket statement. Though thanks to NVIDIAs fantastic Maxwell architecture, AMD is now power hungry in comparison.

          Ahh fanboys, aren't they great?

        • @FabMan:

ASUS Geforce GTX 750 Ti OC (twin fan cooler) here and it's not noisy at all.

        • @hollykryten:

That is the Maxwell architecture for you, brilliant stuff, best architectural improvement NVIDIA has done since the GeForce 8 series first released in 2006.

    • +1

I would definitely go for Intel over and for cpus, but for gpus there's not really a cut and dry X brand is better case. Usually one brand has an edge for one generation and for the next the other pulls in front.

      Also, I don't know why you're comparing a 5770 and 660 Ti. A 5770 was a $200USD card in 2009 and a 660 Ti was $300USD in 2012. And 3 years is an eternity for graphics cards.

Better advice would be to be patient. Wait for the R9 300 series (leaked benchmarks look very promising if the be believed) and then decide on a card once nvidia are forced to drop their prices.

      • Looking at the benchmark of the different elements I should had a much better FPS with Rift with my AMD 5770 + Opteron.

        • +1

Rift is infamous for being horribly optimized. Would not be running tests on that game.

        • Why should you get better results with much older, cheaper hardware? What benchmark are you referring to?

        • @quirkleton:

          Sorry for being confusing.

Dual Opteron and AMD 5770 are honest components, about 4 times slower than my current rig.

But the frame rate is 15 times slower in Rift.

So that's why, I was pointing that the game works better with Intel + nVidia.

I heard many times than games were optimized for the duo Intel + Nvidia. I experienced the same.

    • I negged you because you used the word never in technology.

      • +1 Never say Never :)

        • -2

Negged both of you for use of the N word.

        • @geo365:

          :'(

        • +1

          @FabMan:

          You are both mean ;)

    • Nvidia and Intel both run cooler and thus quieter. They provide better performance for the amount of electricity used too. Costs a bit more than AMD but there's really no comparison.

  • +1

That's a really great price. Any chance of a deal on the Asus GTX980?

    • +13

Best I can do on the ASUS GTX980 as a one off deal is $730. Use coupon STRIXGTX980 on the shopping cart if you are interested.

      • +4

Great! Thanks heaps for the coupon. I now have a 980 on the way.

  • +1

Plenty of stock :) I read it as "3 only".

  • heh "only"

  • think i might retire my 670 sli setup soon haha

    • +1

I'm waiting for a single card that can perform ~50% better than my SLI 670 before retiring it. I think next series should be able to achieve that. Don't die on me 670s!

  • Out of stock every where except for Heatherton.

    • +1

Hi there - the ETA for Perth Stock is 28/04

      • It's currently on backorder - any idea of when the new stock will be available? (Melbourne)

        • +1

Worst case scenario for additional Melbourne stock is 04/05/15 but we might be able to have them in the next couple of days.

  • what would happen if i try to plug this in SLI with my Galax 970 EXOC Black Edition?

    • +4

      You would get SLI functionality

      • OK Cheers,

someone was saying that should be exact brand and model. is that not the case ?

        Kind Regards,

        Slippy

        • +2

don't think most of the time it matters too much

  • +2

This is a really good price for the Strix 970, especially for local stock.

    • AUD507 at MSY
    • Currently sells for USD340 in USA = approx. AUD434 before factoring in shipping
    • Witcher 3 is also pre-order on steam for USD$75.

You're looking at pretty good value. Wrecks my savings plan if I get another one though :(

  • i bought a gigabyte G1 970 from computer alliance the other day for $505. also came with witcher 3 code. they do cheap shipping too. spent a couple hours on OCing and got a respectable 1550mhz gpu and 3800mhz memory with no overvoltage, just 112% power target. fully stable. supposedly gigabyte only puts the better performing gpus from each batch into the G1 cards.

  • might be cheaper from amazon roughly $455 shipped and you can ask them for a 15% refund because the card is deemed as false advertisement, http://www.pcworld.com/article/2887142/amazon-newegg-apparen…

    Just saying…

    • +1

Would they really give you a 15% refund if you bought it now?

    • -1

That refund may be USA only.

Also if you buy it from Amazon then you lose access to any Australian warranty. Your choice.

      • Nope not USA only, I received my refund last week, and also I had a HDMI issue with my card Amazon swapped it right way within 7 days and I had a month to send the defective product and they paid for the shipping

  • +5

Needed a new card and also want the Witcher 3. Done.

  • I rather pay a little more for Aussie stock and support local company.

  • +2

any deal for R9 280X or GTX960? Hopefully there will be sales from now til EOFY sale

  • I got the MSI version of GTX 970 from PCcaseGear Ebay 20% off deal 2 weeks ago for AUD 440 delivered.
Did Tons of Research for benchmark and most of the people who own same MSI GTX 970 had much better FPS which I found really really strange :(
I tried to play Guild Wars 2 (CPU Hungry) / Witcher 2, but the FPS isn't as much as what other benchmark shown. It's even perform worse than my previous HD 7850 Crossfire. (I got 33-45 fps in Witcher 2 which actually it supposed to be 43-60 fps, so confusing )

I'm not so sure if it's a bottleneck issue or not but I don't think this is the case since I got AMD FX-8350 & GPU usage is around 88% -98%.
Majority in tomshardware say that FX 8350 WILL DEFINETELY bottleneck GTX 970 and strongly reccomend i5 4xxx series or i7 4790k & start boasting that Current game haven't utilized 8 cores, intel is more compatible, etc etc

    Any suggestions?

  • Awesome deal for a 970 strix, If only I had the money right now… I'd get another for SLI. But I'm pretty content with my single gtx 970.
