Not to poo poo it, but the model is 2 years old. You can get the A3500 which is effectively the same thing (though newer) in a slightly larger body (though it does have a viewfinder) for the same price at JB at the moment.
Yes, this is smaller, and yes it's cheaper than the A5000, so if size is the critical factor then it's possibly a better deal.

I guess you could argue they are "effectively the same thing" because they are both lower end Sony interchangeable lens cameras, that have a lot of similarities, including price.
But there are also some differences which may be significant to some people - they use use different sensors, viewfinder on one and articulated LCD on the other, etc.
However for many people (including myself), the size and weight, depicted here and here , really does represent more than a slight difference - one is pocket material, the other really isn't - so the second statement "so if size is the critical factor then it's possibly a better deal" shouldn't be underestimated if you are in the market for a camera at this price.
Note: Second link shows α3500 without lens and NEX-3 with lens, and the NEX-3 plus lens still manages to come in at less depth than the grip of the α3500.
I didn't mean to offend you.
I wasn't attacking the deal, I was simply providing an alternative for people who would prefer to get a current model and be able to walk into a bricks and mortar store - some people still prefer that.
I meant that they are effectively the same thing being that they are both mirrorless Sony cameras using APS-C lenses and being within the E mount lens system - therefore they share the same lenses, batteries etc. Yes, there is a different form factor, but I credited people with being able to see that, and being able to read the spec sheets.
I also stated that if size is critical that the NEX is probably the better deal. As for pocketable - I've used a NEX with the stock lens, and while I will agree it's MORE pocketable, I don't think that either are pocketable unless you're living in the 90s and wearing happy pants.
And yes, I understand the size thing - I personally moved from DSLR to A7 due to the size/weight issue, so I don't dismiss it at all.
I will keep in mind that next time I provide an alternative I'll preface it with a more clear indication that I am not criticising the post, just providing an alternative.
I wasn't offended digi79, and likewise, I hope I didn't offend you :-)
I just thought the size perspective would represent more than a "slight" difference to many people…
Yeah, its a completely different form factor. One is dslr form and the other is compact. Same applies to the kit lenses. Usually someone after compact isnt going to get a larger body as an alternative. Saying they are comparable is like saying a motorcycle and a truck are essentially the same thing because they have wheels and travel on land.
A bit tempted. My NEX-3 is getting on in age, and I could do with a more compact lens… but I don't use my current one enough to justify buying a new one.
Is this camera comparable to Nikon 1 J2?

There's extra $45 off for Nikon which makes it more tempting
Would only consider the Nikon if you need fast AF, Sony for IQ. You also have more lens choices going with the Sony system.
Doesn't look like the Nikon comes with a lens Sony has just taken the lead
Really that's pretty sneaky, you would think it would at least come with the 10-30 kit lens.
Really? I am sure they always come with at least the 10-30 lens as standard, especially in retail box.
I'd take the Sony too
I used nex 3f(older model & a bit bulky) before and it was pretty good.
The only thing that's trouble me is the menu; confusing & difficult to access.
I think this is very good for somebody who's looking for a compact size & image quality.
Nikon series have a small sensor, not much different from compact camera. You have to hold it steady in low light(indoor or night time).
SonyA3500, I think you shouldn't compare with as it's huge & heavy.
It should be noted that this model also makes a shutter noise sound along with the normal shutter sound. As in a recorded fake sounding shutter effect that emits from the speakers. There is no way to disable it, it's permanently on.
the lens itself reportedly sells above $350
