Get Your $20 Co-Op Bookshop Membership Cancelled & Fee Refunded

1920

Finished uni and no longer need to buy textbooks from the Co-op? Even when I was at uni, I found that even with the Co-op "discount", other online bookshops were cheaper.

If it's been at least 2 years since you first joined, you're entitled to have your membership cancelled and your fee refunded - this was $20 if I recall correctly, but the fee now is $25.

Forgotten your member number? No problem - see here: http://www.coop.com.au/profile/account/membercheck/

Cheers Op. And thanks Co-op for keeping my $20 safe for all these years even though I never bought anything after the first semester textbooks all of which I refunded.

  • Excellent thanks. I didn't know this existed. 10 years since I've used mine so time to cancel.

  • +3

You have always been able to get a refund on membership if you cancel since I have been a member.

  • Thanks, requested

  • +3

Don't have to mess around with this as I never joined… just bought a few games from them during clearances or lecture notes from the Printing department next door. QU Books at Toowong was always cheaper than UQ's Co-op bookstore and what ever it was called before that. I feel old now.

    • +1

i even got the qu books membership lol, I think that was $5 iirc.

      • Same. Saved a bit of money that.

  • +2

thanks!!! $20 back from 12 years ago LOL

  • Can you please link to some cheaper alternatives to Co-Op?

    • +4

If you already know what you want, check booko.com.au

If not, then feel free to browse coop before searching on booko ;)

      Book depository is very good.
      Also booktopia and also fishpond.

      THE CO-OP'S PRICE BEAT PROMISE

Seems they will beat textbook prices if seller is based in Aus and uni says you need the book for the course.

    • +6

You've gotta be kidding me. Unless you live in Zimbabwe, two years of inflation is in the single digits. Since we're talking about a $20 membership fee, do you really feel screwed if they're 'short' a few cents? I know this is Ozbargain, but goddamn.

      • Nope not kidding lol. Don't even feel personally screwed since I'm not using this service :D … but there are people commenting they're getting refunds from 2004. That's a significant percentage.

        • Look, if an unexpected $20 comes knocking then I answer the damn door. Are you too good to open the door?

        • +2

If inflation is 3% a year your $20 ten years ago is worth about $27 now.

    • -1

How does inflation come into play here? If you had kept the $20 in your wallet two years ago, or received a $20 note back from this, that $20 is worth the exact same amount regardless of whether you held onto it yourself for two years or were given the note today. The $20 in your wallet wouldn't magically turn into $25 due to a $5 note being produced.

Where you lose out isn't inflation, but potential interest associated with putting that $20 in a bank account and earning 2-3% on it over that time. If you physically held onto the money instead of investing it you are no better off.

It is like a beer money present uni student me from a decade ago. Thanks past me! Ironic because back then I needed that money a lot more.

  • +1

Thanks OP! Very grateful to be reminded of this!

  • didnt even take 5 minutes, cheers OP!

  • Thanks OP. Looking forward to getting some money back.

  • Awesome work OP

  • +1

But this voids the $5 birthday voucher :(

    • -6

And any other voucher they tend to send you, plus discounts that might be useful. Better keep the membership IMO. Having the membership gives you one share of the Co-op.

  • Handy to know if you're a member but I don't think it's a deal.

  • +2

Thanks a bunch OP! Coop was a rip

  • This is an awesome deal! Cancelled my membership from '01

  • Thank OP!!

  • Thank you!

  • +3

I have a 10% discount code if its any use to anyone.B2U10

  • How do you discover your join date if it was decades ago? And do they only refund what you paid way back when?

  • +10

There is a better option than getting your fee back http://www.mebank.com.au/the-coop/coophome

$25 "refunded" by ME Bank + 5% Paypass Cashback for 3 months.

Or you can request your membership cancelled after the 3 months Paywave cashback lol.

    • +1

Any way to get this if you're an existing member?

      • +1

Yes, you can upgrade you membership card to the new ME Card, right here:
        http://www.coop.com.au/membership-switch

You will then receive the new card in the post

        • Will you get this if you have had a me bank account in the past?

        • @Hitstachbachman:

It does state "This offer is only available on the first ETA you open and not with any other ETA offer" But Im not 100% sure, if that means the first you create with us, or ever - let me get back to you tomorrow when im back in our office, and I can ask the person responsible for the partnership.

        • +1

          @Hitstachbachman:
Update: Yes you can still get this, if you have had an ME bank account in the past, but you can only get the 5% cash back with us, if you have not signed up for this previously through either ME Bank or The Co-op. (So the only thing that can be a blocker, would be if you have received the 5% cash back before. Hope this helps.

        • Thanks! Helpful to have you on here.

This is why I love Ozbargain.

    Membership search question
    "DOB when you joined?"
Like it changed after you joined? witness protection??

  • +2

Sadly, looks like my membership from 1994 can't be found. Or I already cancelled it in the intervening years and I'm old and senile now and don't remember. :(

    • +2

When the person at the store helped sign up for my membership, my name was like

      Title: Mr
      First Name: Mr Mr
Last Name: (my first and last name here)

So they can never find me on the database without asking for my phone number… so I can't even recover my membership number without actually going to the store I think…

      • If you call or send an email we might be able to help you out. Our customer service regularly gets these questions.
Cant guarantee anything if you signed up with those data :) but it could be worth a try, rather than running down to a store.
        http://www.coop.com.au/contact-us

        • No, he didn't sign up with that data; your store clerk did

  • +7

Ta :) My membership from 1998 was found!
I think they are going to be ozbargain inundated though!

  • Thanks op, forgot about this :)

  • +1

are they gonna be refunding thousands of co-op memberships all of a sudden? Lol

  • +2

Good OZB idea, but this time I'm going to keep my membership for nostalgia.

    • +1

Dont forget that you actually do get some quite good deals as long as you are a member.

There are more than 400 AUD to save on a range of laptops, and many other great partnerships we have formed with various companies to keep providing good deals to our members.

See all your member deals here:
      http://www.coop.com.au/coupon-deals

The newest is a partnership with STA Travel, where you get up to 10% discount on your travels.
If thats relevant for you have a look here:
      http://www.coop.com.au/travel

Would love for you to get more out of it than just nostalgia :)

  • Thanks for the reminder- now I have $20 to spend on the next bargain!

  • They will wonder why so many people decided suddenly to request a refund :)

    • Maybe it will give them cause to have a rethink about their supply chain and pricing.

  • I submitted my cancellation request on 27 Feb and I still haven't heard anything from them…

    • This should have been dealt with a long time ago, so it sounds like something have gone wrong. We are up to date on this area, so I dont think its come through to the team.

Can you please contact us, so we can sort this out for you?
      http://www.coop.com.au/contact-us

  • Thanks OP, looking forward to getting my cash back!

  • +1

they may be more expensive on books but they do have a great deal on Nutcase helmets though

  • +4

I gave them $20 in 1997. Today I asked for that $20 back.

    • Yep, '96 for me. Lets see how this goes.. :)

  • +2

If you guys hang on for a few hours, we got something even better for you :)
    Hang tight.

    • +5

Better than getting our money back? Good luck.

I emailed customer service months ago about not being able to use my membership card in store (purchasing online was fine though), only to recently get an email apologising for not responding and just asking if the problem had resolved itself without actually addressing the problem!

      • +2

Its no secret that we had our challenges with customer service during the start of first semester. The busiest time of year for us.
As you may know we changed to a new web platform and it more than doubled the amount of emails and calls, due to technical issues we had during those weeks. We were not prepared enough for that, and our customer service took a large hit on that account. Completely our fault.

So did we do anything to improve with the knowledge we got?

        1. We hired 30 new customer service representatives to our pool, so we can scale up and down when needed.
        2. We have increased our opening hours to 8pm.

Now we have a brand new team of customer service colleagues standing by to help everyone fast and efficient.

If you feel you did not get a proper service or help, please reach out again, and I will guarantee you will see the new level we are at.

Lastly its important to say that the title OP gave is slightly misleading.
When cancelling a membership you get your membership fee back, so if you paid $2 when you signed up, that's what you get back.
Over the last 58 years we have had different Membership prices between $2-$25, so it really depends on what you paid initially.

Just to set the record straight and avoid confusion :)

        • The busiest time of year for us.

It happens every year, surely with 58 years experience you'd have some idea of what to expect. Apparently not.

1.We hired 30 new customer service representatives to our pool, so we can scale up and down when needed.

Please tell me you did not train them to ask customers if the problem fixed itself without any attempt to fix the problem, because that's exactly what happened.

If you feel you did not get a proper service or help, please reach out again, and I will guarantee you will see the new level we are at.

What do you think I feel? Do you feel I got proper service? I'm in no need of reaching out again, as it also happened last year outside of your 'peak period' and I never even got a reply! I got better prices and service elsewhere so thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

        • +1

I believe you did not get a proper service, and there is nothing I would like more, than the opportunity to change that, but I also completely understand your arguments.

It was important for me to try.

        • How do we tell how much we spent when signing up, it's been 10 years…, so pretty much forgotten how much I paid.

    • +2

Interesting…but is it a better deal than getting $20 back? Doubt it.

    • +1

Is that the $30 coop voucher you get if you stay with them?

      • +2

I promised you guys a better deal for the Ozbargain community.

30 AUD to spend on whatever in our online store, and right now we also have free shipping on domestic orders.

See it as an opportunity for us to show that we are more than just textbooks now, and what other benefits the Membership gives.
And for you to snatch a 30 AUD voucher, and grab yourself some tech goodies, games, collectables, books or what ever you might be interested in.

        • +5

How do we get $30 voucher?

        • Has anyone received the voucher and can list the terms and conditions (i.e. minimum spends, voucher expiry)? And there is no way we can be stopped from cancelling our membership even after using the voucher and still not wanting to keep it right?

        • +1

          @ensanguined:

The terms and conditions link leads to an XML page that seems indicate an error. Clearly this offer has been put together in a hurry to mitigate a mass exodus due to the "OzBargain Effect (tm)"

So far I had no response from Co-op (just the automated mail subscription robot), but it's been less than 24 hours. I would expect a human response by now from a business with good customer service. Right now it's still in the typical response time window. Another day and it'll move into the crap customer service category.

        • +1

          @ensanguined:

We haven't sent any emails out yet.

          No minimum Spend.
Do what you want with it. Its yours :)

          No stopping you.

        • +1

I am the member since 2014.how do i get the $30.00 to spend?

        • @pandyamayur: Hey pandyamayur! As with refunding your membership, unfortunately, you'll need to have been a member for at least two years to qualify.

  • +1

Heh my membership from 1988 is still active, it's been a looong time since I've used it.

  • +1

The Co-op membership online database does not seem to go back as far as the 80's. My membership card disintegrated about 15 years ago :-(

    • Hey Peteru. Feel free to send an e-mail to [email protected] with as many details as you can, and we'll take a look to see if we can find you!

  • I thought it was well known text book pricings were a two way scam by the uni and the publishers?

Just photocopy them from the library.

    • Somehow, I think the Australian Copyright Council would disagree with you on the photocopying front. :(

      • Not to mention that with textbooks you should learn what's in them. Try finding a seat in the library and get some of the content into your head, rather than on another piece of paper ;-)

      • +1

Is Tony Abbott going to put a metadata collector on the photocopy machine now?

    • Yeah, yeah. I honestly think it's ridiculous for them to release new edition every year (and change like few wordings and questions around so that students have to buy the new edition).

  • Says it can't find a match for me.. but I know I joined them twice with two different unis.. once in 2000 and once again in 2003.

    • Hey Lostn. Feel free to send an e-mail to [email protected] with as many details as you can, and we'll take a look to see if we can find you!

  • They have had a monopoly in metropolitan tertiary institutions for years, about time everyone cashed in their $20

    • Hardya, if we had a monopoly, I'd have a much nicer car!

  • hopefully doesnt take the 45 days as mentioned on the website

    • Hey chuneeperformance. As you can imagine, we've had a pretty abnormal influx over the last couple days, so it's looking likely that we'll be using every last second of those 45 days in some cases. Sorry!

  • Hmm…mebbe too socialist of me but I'll leave mine in the Co-Op for the (present and) future students.
    Still upvoted though.

    • +1

Thanks, HN Professional! Feel free to keep using your membership, even if you've graduated. We sell a lot more than textbooks these days!

  • +1

There are also books (particularly from legal publishers) which are only available from the co-op (with a discount) or direct from the publisher (at rrp). If you need those books, it's definitely worth staying a member.

  • +2

So ehh when do we get the actual $30 voucher??

    • I got mine already :D

    • +1

      Same here, no voucher yet…

  • +1

    waiting for 30 AUD

  • +1

Like the above posters, any details on the $30 voucher?
