$0 Annual Fee for American Express Velocity/Qantas Cards

150

Starting to get that FOMO feeling with all these Amex deals flying about but fear not. American express are issuing their Low Rate, Discovery (Qantas) and Velocity (Virgin) cards without the annual fee each year. Now any promotion is in your grasp as these are issued by Amex themselves.

Some differences between cards (LR = Low Rate, Q = Qantas, V = Virgin)
Minimum Credit Limit: LR $1000, Q $2000, V $2000
Points system: LR None, Q 2 points per $1, V 2 points per $1
Sign up bonus: LR None, Q 7500 points after spending $300, V 7500 points after spending $300

2 points per $1 spend but if you already have the ozbargainer card system (ING Orange Everyday, uBank Ultra and Citibank Platinum/Signature cards) then you'll know that none of the providers issue Amex.

Application process was pretty simple. Applied on Tuesday and was approved on Wednesday. No proof of income was required.

Why get this over the Qantas Discovery card which is also annual fee free, earns FF points, has a sign up bonus and lower minimum income requirement? Yes, this one is low interest, but who here pays interest?

    • Yeah, i was just speaking to the rep.

Go for those cards instead :(

      • In fact, i would spend with my citibank cards unless it is an amex offer.

        • Is Citibank reward better than Amex?

        • @SickDmith:

Visa/master more widely accepted without a surcharge, but I'm pretty sure the conversion into virgin or krisflyer is 1 citi = 0.6? Kris/velocity.
..now although you earn 1.5 citi points per $1aud that 1.5pts converts into .9ish kris/velocity points.

So if you can get 1:1 or better on another card with no annual fee, you're better off… Looking at FF points in isolation, that is.

    • qantas discovery bdoesnt have fee free at the moment does it?

      • Yes it does, and has been for the 5 or so years I've had the card. It was introduced as their crappier perks but annual fee free product. If you click on the link, it's the blue card 3rd from the top.

OP needs further updates: It's not 2 points per $1 (which would be awesome!) for either card. It's 1 point per $1, 2 if spending on Qantas/Virgin products. Big difference

        • ooh right sorry I was thinking the Ultimate card. You're right.

I got one of these no fee for ever cards from amex a few years ago.I never used it but did have some money in there as i dont like not having some in a card so they dont cancel it
Anyway after a few years I received a dirty letter saying I owe them $200 they were cancelling the card and suing me!!
They had unilaterally changed the conditions on the card and introduced a fee.
They eventually relented and offered me 10% of the money i had in there BUT they did a credit report on me which continues to haunt me now 3 years later
    Dont go near amex!!!!

So they sent you a letter outlining the new fees, gave you ample time to cancel, but you didn't bother reading it? Or did it just magically happen? If the latter then you go to the financial Services Ombudsman.if the later….well.

    • Serves you right for keeping money on a credit card.

  • Sign up bonus 7,500 is after spending $300 I think?

    • 5,000 extra points when you spend $300 on purchases within the first 3 months of becoming a Card member2
    • 2,500 extra points2 after your first Card spend in Australia on selected Qantas products and services4

I don't have amex issued card so this interest me. Just need one without annual fee and low limit to get amex deals.
Card color blue also not bad.

    • Thanks, updated!

      • Tell us your progres of applying/getting this card, OP

        • I applied for the low rate card on Tuesday (Silly me i should of applied for the qantas card). Got approved on Wednesday. Card coming in a couple of days.

They didn't call work to verify income.

        • Cool.
Hmm don't know if 5000 (hard to get extra 2500 points) worth to go to qantas card.
Also would probably never use this card so rewards are useless.
It's hard to get two points per one dollar

          • Selected Qantas products and services are the following items purchased directly from Qantas: Qantas passenger flights (with a QF flight number) Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and annual fees. Excludes Jetstar, Qantas Holidays, Qantas branded non airfare products and any Qantas products and services not purchased directly from Qantas. Subject to the Qantas American Express Cards Points Terms and Conditions available here.

I think I will also get LR thx

  • At least for then Virgin card the 2 point for $1 is only for purchases for Virgin products. Rest are 1 for $1.

Just be aware that some business will charge you extra fee just because you're waving an Amex Card.

FYI: Amex does NOT impose a "transaction fee" for using Amex (it defeats the purpose). It's retailers who'll keep the "transaction fee" and nothing goes to Amex.

    • +2

Actually amex does charge retailers a % service fee, which is higher than visa/mastercard. Some retailers charge customers a fee to cover this. However, a lot of retailers go overboard and actually make money from sn excessive fee. The most it should be is 1-2%.

      • My info came from someone I know who owns a small business. Amex doesn't impose any "fee" on him or tells him.

        • +3

Then it's likely his eftpos/cc processing merchant is just overcharging him on Visa and Mastercard transactions instead…

And retailers don't deal with visa/mastercard/Amex directly. They deal with a merchant that does the processing (usually one of the banks but there are others)

        • You're right, I forgot about the middle-man (e.g. banks).
The effect is roughly the same though as the merchant will likely pass on the higher amex fee plus their cut of the profit.

  • I signed my dad up to Velocity Rewards for the Kris Flyer promotion and he got an email offering this card with 12,500 points bonus points rather than 7,500. Just an FYI for those who recently joined Velocity; maybe wait a few days and keep an eye on your emails.

  • NO
They did not give me any notice of the change and the ombudsman told me that the only term and condition that you should take any notice of is the term and condition that they can change their terms and conditions without notice to you!!!

  • These have always been $0 a year though? What's the deal?

  • Grrrrrrrr………Grrrrr….. Just spent an hour of my life entering all the nitty gritty details into the on-line application form, only to be told AT THE END of the convoluted procedure that their on-line application site is OFF-LINE. Why the HELL can't they state that up front?????
