Kobo Aura E-book Reader @ JB Hi-Fi - $129

80

As above. Haven't seen it on sale for ages (regular price $159).
Probably on clearance as they are discontinuing this model to make way for the Aura H2O and yet to be released Glo HD, but reviews for this model all rate it highly.

  • My review: the device itself is awesome. Backlight is great. Touch screen responsive.

Kobo shop can be difficult to set up. It's best to create your account and add billing details in the desktop website. Doing it via the device is temperamental. It may have improved in the 6 months that I tried it.

  • I bought mine from harvey norman dec 2014 as click and collect for AUD128. When i went there to collect it. It was a demo stock that was waiting for me but they threw in the kobo leather cover free. Really good ebook reader. Only complaint is way heavy compared with my sony prs-t3

  • Darn, I bought one for $144 just two weeks ago :-(

    • Get a refund and buy it again at the discounted price ;)

  • But the new model is coming

    • The new model (glo hd) doesn't have much improvement over the current model. It has a higher resolution screen, but the aura has linger battery life, is smaller and lighter (not to mention $50 cheaper).

      • I thought the new one was gonna be $129. Well.

  • Be careful that the screen backlight isn't dodgy. It's not the end of the world but I found it distracting.

Also if you go into JB HiFi and ask for the best price, a few months ago when I did this I got it for $130 anyway. However I went with a Kindle PW2 in the end because my screen had lighting issues. The Kobo Aura has a smaller form factor, both have the same size screen. Both have positives and negatives.

As for a new model coming out, at the end of the day it's a device that has one function. I think both are good at that function. If you're looking for travel convenience, it seems like battery life and weight would be your most important considerations.

  • Personally, I like the bezel buttons of the older kindles (and the super new one). I don't like having to put my finger on the screen like with my kobo mini (not to mention the mini's temperamental resistive touch sensor).

    • Also have the kobo mini and prefer buttons but for the 38 buck I paid for it the buttons can go jump

I actually find my mini a great size and weight, not back in the market unless I can get something 7" plus that can rock a textbook for me

  • +1

This one has a capacitive sensor making it far more responsive than the IR sensor on the Kobo touch
