    Those data limits are terrible!

True, but its the first time one of the big 3 (Optus, Vodafone & Telstra) have offered unlimited calls for $30! With no contract.

Who runs out of call credit?
        Who runs out of data?

        • +7

Who runs out of call credit? Tradies, older generation, non smart phone users.

Who runs out of data? Ozbargainers who keep checking the ozbargain website every second ;)

Like everyone has mentioned this plan is suited for the people who can't stop talking, not for data hungry users.

Who runs out of data? Me, every month :(

I have 1 gb of data and uses nearly 2.5gb each month the last 3-4 months. Am on a 2 yr plan that will expires this month and the BYO is perfect. 3 gb for 45 bucks seems ok.

        • @Azuremaverick:
For $5 extra, you get an extra 150mins from Voda… provided that the coverage of Voda is good in your area.

        • @ProjectZero:

$5 extra on which one? the $45? I thought it's unlimited minutes already?

If it's $5 more than the $30 optus plan, I'm not going on the $30 anyways, as I need at least 2.5-3gb of data per month.

That and no, the Voda coverage is not the best in our place.

        • @Azuremaverick: Sorz should be more specific…

$50 red gets you unlimited sms and calls + 300mins of international and 3GB of data

500mb is a joke nowadays, even Telstra can do better than that. This plan may be suitable for non smartphone user only.

    • Yeah I'm happy I got the $30 plan with 1.5gb. Don't even make enough phone calls to justify unlimited and 1gb drop in data.

    • Nah I barely use 500Mb/mth (I get 1Gb) because I have wifi @ work & home. It depends on what you're surfing.

  • no wonder why Optus's performance is sliding down, good luck for 2015 financial year, another new CEO again?

  • If the $30 plan was $25, that would be a deal. Someone like my Mum who doesn't need data but wouldn't mind texting, and occasionally overseas, would be well served.

The $45 deal might squeeze out Amaysim.

  • I got the $60 plan and 2 extra data sharing sims for my son, so he has Aldi for calls and an Optus data share in a myfi, Telstra want $10 per month per sim for datashare Optus data share is $5 one off no monthly……. 6 gb feeds the family fine……

So this really isn't a deal. Telcos know that data is the key to upselling and profits. Call/texts are minimal cost so can be unlimited without really costing much.
It's almost like the freemium or in app purchases model.

I'd say the marginal cost of an SMS message is near zero these days.

      • exactly.

  • If i'm on the existing $60 BYO SIM month by month plan, do I need to do anything or these changes automatically flow through to me?

  • +1

Even the Telstra $30 Freedom plan is better. 1.3gb, unlimited calls to Telstra, unlimited texts to Aus numbers, $220 credit: https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/off…

    • 1.3gb expires in 25 May so it goes back to 800MB

      • Oh really? I thought if you started on one of these pre-paid plans you could stick with whatever deal you signed up for.

        • You would only get it till the end of the current recharge cycle, which is 28 days unless used up earlier. I suppose the difference is if this is a limited time "bonus" or an updated inclusion.

        • @quarrymaster: That blows. I hope it's not the same story on my Optus pre-paid (I got in for the 1.5gb $30 a month deal)

        • @Poimandres:
Just check if that is the actual inclusion rather than a "promo".

  • +1

500MB kill the deal LOL, im staying on my old Virgin plan 460$ worth of calls and 2250MB worth of data for 29$

  • Boost Prepaid then. $40 per month with unlimited calls and texts, 3Gb data plus 1Gb bonus per Sunday.

landroverz7 is right. 500 Mb data a month is only good for non-smartphone users.

  • Just for those who don't know, for those going for the $45 plan, if you do call internationally you're better off spending $50 at voda. It's unlimited calling domestically and internationally to selected countries with the 3Gb data. unlimited is better than a certain amount of minutes for am extra $5

    • That's the prepaid, I think that one is limited to 10 countries… the $50 red post paid is 300mins to any country I think…

  • Yeah it is prepaid. I pay $50 and call new zealand everyday for about 4 hours lol, cheaper than buying a calling card or paying for any other pre paid plan with a certain amount of minutes.

  • Lebara has a prepaid monthly plan for $29.90 for unlimited national calls sms/mms and 5GB data

    • There's also a $300 (equivalent to $25 a month) plan If you pay for a year.

  • Thanks OP - just moved my $45 SIM-only plan to the new equivalent. I will now get 150 mins of international calls and unlimited international SMS to the included countries at no extra charge so that's a real bargain.

  • Since this offer is month to month, if you sign up to the $30 plan before 31st May does the unlimited portion also drop off as well? Or does it mean that new applicants after that date will not get the unlimited on the $30 plan?

    • You just have to sign up by the 31st. You will keep the unlimited for the life of your plan apparently.
