Cheapest price for a Riseman anywhere and this outfit seems a lot more reputable than Hong Kong-based Ebay sellers.

  • Man series :) Get some!

  • Just don't get too excited by the temp function. Unless it's changed they don't review well from what I've read. Apparently you have to take the watch off for (ten?) minutes to get anywhere near an environment reading. But love the G-Shocks myself.

    • Any watch attached to your wrist is surely going be affected by your body heat radiation, had pro-trek watches in the past which you need to do exactly the same with.

You don't say Sherlock. Any thermometer in the world will be affected by body heat if in close proximity to your skin. What are they supposed to do, have a sensor on a long wire dangling off the watch?

Also, it's more like 5 minutes off your skin is enough to read the air temp. Depending on your G-Shock/Protek, some of them allow you to calibrate the thermometer to compensate for the effect of body heat, so it'll always read 3-4C lower while on your wrist. Not 100% accurate but that's usually the rule if you're looking to estimate the air temp while the watch is on your wrist.

      • Here in Canberra the temps can and do get very cold… and my G-Shock Mudman (a terrific watch!)will always read high 20's early 30's if its on my wrist all day.

Adjusting 3 or 4 degrees lower than body temp wont give very accurate results, and tbh I'd an accurate reading off wrist if I need it (like sitting in a car or office).

Takes less than 10min, but the reading I get when its acclimatised is very accruate when compared to room thermometeres.

Outdoors, yes. I was referring more to indoor readings. Though thermometers are affected by humidity and wind (assuming you're taking outdoor readings) so depending on weather conditions, you can find huge fluctuations even on the same day.

My original point was that MattyD was essentially blaming ABC sensor watches for not defying the laws of physics, which is patently silly. If the watch is on your wrist, yes of course radiant body heat will affect the reading. It's not a failing of the watch.

And if you guys think the thermometers on these watches are inaccurate, it's a good thing you don't have to depend on the altimeter function (which just converts barometric pressure to altitude via a simple formula), because that is a total crapshoot.

  • Anyone got a go to place for decent G-Shock prices? Always wanted one, minus without dropping a few hundred dollars

  • Be nice if it had the compass capability too - but guess you cant ask for everything. Definitely good for Zombie Apocalypse.. :)

    • Why I went the Mudman G-Shock instead. Compass is much more useful imo than altitude, but I guess it depends on what you are going to use it for. I use the compass almost every day… love my Mudman!

Try Starjewels - http://www.starjewels.com.au/watches/g-shock.html - based in Sydney CBD, so able to pick up if nearby, they also offer free delivery.

Rep posts on Ozbargain, also might be able to get better price just by asking the rep. I received another 15% off the web price on g-shock just by asking for a better price.

    • It's definitely worth a shot, the SJ rep is one heck of a guy.
Though the Risemans on SJ's website are going for $332-354, so you would need to ask for about 45% off to match this price.

Platypus Outdoors also have a store front in Melbourne.
