  • Anyone have a spare code, please pm me. Can't believe I found this so laaatteee

  • Is there an expiration date on when I can activate the sim card ?

Also can I use roaming on pre-paid sims ? Meaning can I use them overseas ? I know buying a local sim overseas would be cheaper but can I use the included $50 for sending / receiving txt to my family in Australia ?

    • +3

Is there an expiration date on when I can activate the sim card ?

Unlike other carriers Vodafone SIMs don't have expiry dates.

Also can I use roaming on pre-paid sims ?

      Yes

can I use the included $50 for sending / receiving txt to my family in Australia ?

Yes but it won't go very far. The lower value recharges carries much more credit, e.g.
the $40 cap has 14 times the credit.

I managed to break 10+ hours ost, albeit by looping video.

The battery life on this phone is great.

Ordered on 5th for free delivery as some suggested. No response from HN. Stocks in stores have plummeted in Brisbane, so was a bit concerned.

Contacted them via their site. Got response that my local store would respond within 24 hours, which may be a bit late. So popped in to find my order was waiting collection at that store.

    No free delivery was available.

    • +1

I ordered 4th April and got a confirmation that day. Invoice and tracking info came though toady. Might be store dependent.

      • So your order was for free delivery like my order. Mine ended up as click & collect at local store. Was told there was no free delivery on these. Seems local store was wrong.

Still I'm glad to be able to get one for $40, as delivery was never a big advantage.

  • picked free delivery as well. got a tracking notification today. too easy.

  • +2

Ordered and paid for one online, didn't get a response from HN about pickup date.

Called HN Marion SA, they confirmed the order and put one aside for me.

Picked up yesterday, still have around 10 available when I left at 5pm-ish.

Will use as a spare phone.

  • Picked up mine too from Gepss X SA, last one I think. Unlocked it and using Telstra sim now. Probably will give it to my in-laws.

  • Got one delivered today.

  • Hi Ozbairgainers,
I'd there a screen protector already fitted to the Y550?
Can someone please summarise how they set the phone up to remove apps like Vodaphone etc. I think if we optimise and install basics like here maps, we have the perfect phone for the money.
Also a link to an eBay case supplier would be handy.
Finally a link to root the phone and a link for the a method to update to lollipop for our tech heads out there.
Basically a one stop Y550 post would be fantastic.

    • Vodafone apps, Facebook, and Twitter can all be uninstalled without any modification. Just drag the icon to the top of the screen where an "Uninstall" symbol will appear.

As for rooting - just read the thread here, on XDA developers (search for it on Google), and on Whirlpool forums (under Android Phones). Plenty of info at all of those places.

One thing to be aware of is that this is by no means the perfect phone.

It's not a good idea to give this to someone who's technically challenged unless you're prepared to play tech support, because they'll run into "insufficient storage" errors quite quickly.

    • Sapsec …. Ask and ye shall receive…
      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2334900

  • Does anyone have a screenshot of their page when it said 5 phone limit per person?

I ordered 3, but they're only giving me 2 unless I provide them some proof. Sigh.

    • -1

Thats weird, I definitely remember it saying 5 per person.
Surely they would know that as THEY did it. The whole "proof" thing sounds ridiculous.

      • Yeah… The guy was kinda rude on the phone as well. Didn't seem like he wanted to hand any over.

And I'm 100% sure it was 5. Next time I'm going to archive similar deals on archive.org, for proof.

    • The fact they accepted your order and charged your credit card is proof enough.

  • Do Hardly Normal send out "your phone is shipping" enails? I ordered last Saturday and haven't heard anything yet. At least they haven't canceled my order yet…

    • I was in the same situation… order being processed. Emailed them and they had the order sitting on the shelf at my local store but had made no effort to contact me. Claimed they were not allowed to post them out??
I guess yours may be in the same situation.
Voda post them out so why cant HN?

      • Vodafone are still charging $100 so they can afford to post them for nix. I guess Hardly Normal want you to visit your local store and entice you to pay full price for another item that's on special. Asking them to price match with themselves, effin ridiculous. That way the "love" is spread around the franchisees. Given my local store was out of stock when I ordered and the nearest store that has stock now is 85kms away (actually somewhere near to you!) I'm assuming stock shortages. I'm gonna wait and hope they deliver like they agreed too If some stock shows up and/or my credit card bill becomes due I might get off my lazy ass.

Anyway what sort of crazy system do that have? I wonder if the stores have a way of hijacking online orders. Yeh, I'll go with that. How many people have got delivery so far?

      • +2

Same happened to me - went to store & it was waiting. Told no delivery was available.

      • +1

The bit that pizzed me off is that they don't let you know. They prepare the item for pickup even though it is ordered for delivery and wait for you to chase it up.
        Slack!
Anyway.. like some great bargains we have to endure some pain to get the gain?

        • +2

Never have received a pick up email over many orders. Always shows "processing", despite sitting waiting for pick up.

In one case ($8 Telstra Starter Packs) sat on the shelves for over a month, until I was in the store & asked what happened to my order. It was nearing last days to make claim for refund with PayPal. I had given up on the order as it still showed as "processing" :-(

        • +2

Yep. They're fine with taking our money, but they won't ship the order, let us know its ready for pickup, or if it's out of stock. Even 1 month later.

          Screw them, seriously.

        • +1

          @raven2000:
Communications with the customer must rank at around #99 in priorities at HN?

        • +1

          @xywolap:
I don't even think it's in their vocabulary.

    • Ordered over the Easter weekend. Received tax invoice only last Tuesday. No email notification about shipping. But, it was delivered yesterday.

      • I ordered then too and I haven't got my tax invoice yet, but they managed to charge my card ok.
The confirmation email says that "Your tax invoice will be emailed when your order is shipped."
which is a strange way of doing things, but at least it serves as a useful indicator.

        Noticed this from the FAQ:
"Products are dispatched from your nearest Harvey Norman store and usually shipped within 2 days"[emphasis added]

So that's how they keep their franchisees happy and why some are not being shipped. Each store decides on their own it seems. That might be why they delay the invoice too - they need to put the details of the delivering franchisee on the order which for some reason they can't correctly predict.

I see now the Harvey Norman business model only really works well for Gerry Harvey and their shareholder and leave a lot to be desired for customers who may as well be dealing with a small business - because they are - although there probably is some limited protection from the franchiser.

  • No email for pick up, no phone call, asked online chat and they said they will deliver..strange. Checking stock at HN near my place..no stock..and nearest HN is 20 km away… sigh

  • I purchased a phone last Tuesday for delivery. No invoice. Called the H.N customer line several times and spoke online. Got the invoice sent to me and told to pick up the product in QLD, when I live in VIC. Then got hand balled, told that it will be sent to local VIC store and will be no more than a couple of days. Called Thursday and H.N said the order was delayed and was supposed to arrive yesterday. Call to H.N again today. Advised not sure when stock will arrive and I can get a refund if I want. Spoke to online customer help and they organized to get one shipped from another store, however was advised would arrive sometime mid-next week. Thinking of calling up and asking for a substitute product.

    • +1

The substitute product wont compare if of similar value. Best just to hold out for the Y550.
These were displayed as having the option for pickup or delivery but HN changed the display to disable pickup. They should honour all units sold as delivery included.
      But being HN… :-(

      • Yeh goal is to try and get something better at the same price due to the stuff around. Worth a try I guess. Otherwise I will have to wait, assuming they come through with it.

        • So what is better that costs $40 and also includes a $50 prepaid sim? :)

      • The original product needs to be substituted with a similar one. There is no (legal) requirement for it to be of the same value, but good luck getting a franchisee to lose money on a sale. I've no idea whether there is a time frame on supply of the original product but you'd have to give the seller reasonable time to supply especially if you were told the product was out of stock in the first place.

I haven't read through the conditions of sale but I suspect it contains what ever loopholes they can get away with. I recently got my local Woolies to partially redeem an outstanding raincheck from November for Vodafone starter kits after many attempts. I argued they should supply a recharge voucher instead which they did after I happened to catch the 2IC near the customer service desk.

        Edit:
Well, well, well. It seems Harvey Norman Online has a rain-check policythat states "an alternative product with similar features with equivalent or a higher value". Can I have a Moto G please?

        • Got offered a another phone, went online and compared it. Personally thought Huawei phone was better, so decided to wait.

        • Much better than the phone you mentioned in your original text. Are they serious?

        • @mbmol1: Which phone did they offer?

  • +2

Heard that d1ckhead Gerry Harvey on the radio today, telling everyone what a genius he is for advocating GST on all online purchases. What a knob.

    • Please that is an "integrity measure", not a change to the GST ;-)

So the current proposal means buying & downloading a movie from overseas will cost you 10% more, but ordering a DVD of the movie from overseas is GST free. Joseph Hockey certainly has some "integrity".

    • Even if the GST extends to everything it's not going to make a lot of difference to his business. People are still saving money even when shipping and agents fees are taken into account and an extra 10% is not going to make a difference in the majority of cases. Goodness knows why this is easier to enforce for intangibles when Customs says its too expensive to enforce on physical items passing through the border when they are worth less than AUD 1000.

      • +1

Yeah, Turnbull on advise from customs has repeatedly said that enforcement costs would negate sum gains with this matter. I get the sense that Gerry Harvey just wants to "get" online sales.

        • +2

He's not above a bit of media whoring either.

        • Would the only way to collect the gst on overseas purchases be through customs?
There are other much easier ways :-)

  • +3

My local Kmart and dick smith and HN were out of stock of the Y550, Coles has them ticketed at $99 but they scan at $49 for anyone looking to pick one up

    • It's better if they do it the other way around = free.

    • Did they come with the vodafone sim?

      • +2

        Yes the $50 cap sim

        • That's weird I would have expected the Coles and KMart orders to Vodafone to be on the same terms. Looks like Kmart customers are getting screwed.

  • Do stores like Harvey norman have micro-SIM cutters? I will need to get my Sim card cut down. Should I do it myself or get it done by someone?

    • +1

If it's the included Vodafone SIM it has 2 SIM sizes - so you already have the correct SIM size for this phone ;-) Just snap out smaller micro-SIM from standard SIM card.

If not, ask for a free SIM swap at a the phone company's store. I've done it many times at Vodafone & Telstra stores. Have not tried other Telcos. Others may post out a micro-SIM, which you then transfer your service to.

Cutting a micro-SIM from a standard SIM is easy if you have a template or another micro-SIM & sharp cutters/ blade. Google for advice, templates & videos.

    • If your carrier will do a free SIM swap or cut it for free I'd try those options first. Otherwise its more a question of about the costs of insurance vs. your SIM cutting skills. If the replacement SIM cost is trivial then you have little to lose by giving it a go yourself. I'm sure there's some advice around here. If you think you might need to swap the SIM between mini and micro SIM sockets I don't think cutting it with scissors would be the best choice.

      • I have a TPG sim so they don't have a physical store I can go to. Plus, it costs about $20 to get the sim replaced or swap over to the microSim. One of the Harvey Norman guys recommended going to Allphones which I will try out. I hope they'll cut my sim!

        • The phone comes with a Multi-fit Mini/Micro SIM.

If you pop out the MicroSIM from the MiniSIM, then you can hold the MiniSIM without the MicroSIM against your existing MinISIM and then use a fine Sharpie to trace a the shape of the MicroSIM on your existing SIM (making sure the corners match up).

Then just use sharp scissors until they fit. It's straightforward as long as you don't cut too much and hold the SIMs exactly together.

        • I really dont want to take the chance of damaging my sim. If I can get it done at a store, that'd be cool otherwise as a last resort, i'll cut it myself.

        • @Nerdis: A lot of stores would be concerned about liability on the chance that the SIM won't work and you blaming them.

If your SIM isn't that old and has a smaller area of gold coloured contacts (i.e., similar to the included SIM), then you won't damage your SIM.

Even if it's the older style of SIM with a larger area of contact (think the square part, if you go from the cut out corner), if you cut it in the right position, it'll still work.

I've done it heaps of times, and I've never ended up with an inoperable SIM, making sure that I only use good scissors.

Look on YouTube for a guide if you need more info.

        • +2

Nevermind! I called TPG and demanded that I get a microSIM for free. And they caved :D

  • Found some stores have stock online so ordered last night got email this morning and pick up from Harvey Norman store today. Sales said they had stock came in yesterday.

    • Yes, I noticed my local was showing stock last night but nor surrounding stores, but they still haven't contacted me - but then I elected for delivery.

      • strange, I noticed free delivery on their web site but on the invoice I received today it said "pick up- in store only, delivery not available".

        • It also said that on the item page. You would have only seen free delivery if you selected delivery which for some reason the web site permits. Fair enough I thought, given no stores were available for pickup when I ordered.

      • +1

HN has a hang up with contacting customers… you have to contact them and keep at them.

        • I was hoping that by not contacting them they might deliver it. I see my local store is currently out of stock, though they were showin stock on the weekend. Does anyone know whether the local store has any involvement in delivery/invoicing? Hardly Normal seems well, hardly normal.

    • During the early stages the website did allow a choice of pickup or delivery.
HN changed it later… there was no mystical drama involved… they just deactivated the delivery button… that's all…

  • Has anyone tried to get the starter kit credit converted into something more useful than the normal $50 inclusions? Personally, I would trade mine if I ever get it for a $40 voucher (or a kit if Vodafone will transfer credit between services)

  • Yesterday there was a Harvey Norman radio advertisement in Canberra which clearly mentioned the $45 Huawei prepaid mobile phone. I checked the website and they have new stock for our local store.

If Harvey Norman are paying $$$ for radio advertising of the Huawei then they must still be making a profit from these things!

    • +2

Most likely Vodafone are "subsidising" these sales, though HN might be discounting by an extra $4 .That's clear to me because of the multitude of outlets that have them on sale now. Many if not more of the specials in supermarkets are because of the manufacturer providing the discount.

      • I would imagine that Vodafone worldwide had a mega order with Huawei and for one reason or another have decided to offload/dump a fair few and chosen Australia as the place to do it. Voda is a mega International operation.

        • +1

They may well have a mega order but the fact that FDD-LTE 850(B28) is the only low 4G band in the Y550-L02 means this particular model variant is targeted at us. I suppose its a strategy. like free data weekends to try and attract new customers to the network.
Which reminds me: Vodafone, it's time for another poorly designed handset cash back offer.

  • is the y550 ok for a granny phone? (nothing really demanding)

    is it laggy?

    • This is my first ever smart phone so I may not be the best judge. I find the phone great and it does not lag. The inbuilt memory is very small so you could not download a lot of apps to the phone. I guess it may lag if the memory was full? I have bought a sd card so I can at least save photos to the sd card to save space. Only annoying thing I find is that the bottom buttons (home, back etc) are not backlit and it is hard to find these especially in poor lighting. For an older person this may or may not be an issue. Hope that helps.

      • thanks for your feedback!

      • i picked up one this afternoon. seems quite good for a cheap simple phone.

you are right about the lack of illumination for the buttons at the bottom. it is annoying.

        • i also need a sim cutter :(

    • It depends on your Granny. Mine wouldn't even recognise it as a phone. I don't have one myself but people at WP have said the Huawei launcher simplifies use and the lower DPI make things bigger and easier to read. However a larger screen phone or even a phablet might be easier still. I've read its a good performer.

    • Your granny should be happy with this phone, it has a Snapdragon 401 CPU. It is a quad core 64 bit CPU and I got approx 200k AnTuTu benchmark, 20k more than my Motorola snapdragon 400. Only downside is only has 4gb RAm.

      • snapdragon 410, and 1gb ram. 4GB internal storage.

    • i noticed it also has a built-in "simple" mode where the home screen is replaced with big tiles.

  • anyone else still waiting on a shipping confirmation?

    • +1

Yes - from Easter. Just wasting time here before I call HN.
Edit: Dammit, I should have done that first. They only answer calls 9-5. useless bastards. In the meantime you might check if your local store has stock.

      • Aww darn. Please post an update when you get in touch with them.

        • That probably won't help you. Judging by the comments above they are typically referring people to their local stores though they may be able to move stock between stores. My local store and nearest stores are out of stock. The nearest stocks to me are ~85kms away.

      • I just got off the phone with HNO. As I quoted above, orders are dispatched by your local store and as such depend on local stocks. The CSR I was escalated to says that these phones cannot be posted by your local store is because "something" (originally he said "contract"!) needs to be signed. My translation of that is the AMTA identity form needs to be filled in because of the included SIM. Good excuse (even if I did have to make it up myself - I wonder if CC payment for the phone voids the argument) Allegedly, stores that have made deliveries have made them in error. The online system system accepts orders for pickup only orders as a workaround (my interpretation) that is why delivery is shown as free. Their records show they did try to contact me by phone - multiple times - on the same day early last week to advise me of the need to pickup (I presume or was told I forget) and failed because my phone was switched off, but they didn't try to email me (Duh!).

As to resolution they will try to have stock transferred to my local store (they had to ask which one sigh) which can take, was it, 3-5 working days. I did offer to pick up the SIM if the phone could be posted but I doubt they have any interest in expediting my order or exceeding the low expectations they have set.

So the moral of the story is unless you want to try your luck in the free delivery lottery which seems to have had all its winners already, if you've elected for delivery you need to contact customer service and HNO need to fix their systems.

In hindsight I should have asked to speak to the manager.

    • The last one I bought online was delivered even though there's no shipping confirmation.

  • How many of you have had a delivery?

  • I ordered one on 02/4. It was shipped on 07/4 and delivered to my address on 09/4. Holidays were between 03-06/4 so it was pretty quick!

  • Seems Voda is rolling out KK 4.4.4 for the Y550.
    http://support.vodafone.com.au/articles/FAQ/Huawei-Ascend-Y5…

Note that does a factory reset at the end of the update, so recommend you try to do the update before you personalise the phone!

    • mine came with that installed

  • Hi,Just wondering if someone else has issues with Y550's GPS? Mine keeps saying "GPS Lost" during navigation every 10-15 minutes..

    • using online maps by chance??

      • I have the latest update and the device didn't lose signal or compass direction on Google Maps (high accuracy location mode).

Worked perfectly yesterday. It wasn't connected to an external power source.

      • Yes ,while using Google online maps….
