    • Some iOS apps support Chromecast. One thing Chromecast and other HDMI devices does that the Apple TV doesn't is control the TV. eg if I send a video to my Chromecast, it will switch over to the appropriate HDMI input, which in turn switches to the correct AV receiver channel. With the Apple TV, I have to switch the TV input separately, which is an extra step.

I also find it easier to take it with us on trips, rather than taking the Apple TV. This is useful to stream content, but of course it's more limited with iOS devices like impromptu slideshows etc.

  • Worked, thanks OP

  • Thanks OP! Just grabbed one.

Why is the play store saying Stan app not compatible with my device? Sony Xperia Z.

    • Ok that is annoying my device is not supported. Will check out stan casting from chrome, and then close account.

      • Thanks, you saved me a lot of frustration! I was just about to use this bargain, but I also have Xperia Z. BUT it appears from Netflix list that Xperia Z is compatible with Netflix app, and currently Harvey Norman sells Chromecast for $38, so I will probably just buy it from HN.

You can still buy this @ $29, you will just not be able to use stan with your phone. You can cast via chrome browser from your pc. Netflix will also work.

Thanks OP, just picked one up at Fountain Gate…quick turn-around of on-line order.
Was going to buy at HN today….WTF is wrong with Gerry Harvey…the guy is a dinosaur who thinks he has an on-line presence; he wouldn't know on-line or customer service if it jumped up and hit him in the face. He's just bitter and twisted that others do it better than him and all he can do is moan, and moan, and moan…

  • Great price, picked one up today :) Thanks OP! Between Stan/Netflix I think Netflix is slightly better although has a terrible search system with LOTS of side scrolling but it has more playback options and an actual stop button on the iPhone app

  • I got one today thanks Op. Setup with my iPad ok, can't figure out how to control it on Netflix? Had to delete app and install again, all good.

  • Thanks picked up one too. My Chromecast is not connecting to my vivid wireless hotspot. What should I do next?

    • are you getting the error "could not communicate with your chromecast" ?

if so, connect your phone or device directly to the chromecast's SSID "chromecastXXXX". Then run the chromecast setup app again and it should work.

  • Thanks OP. have ordered one for click & collect @ 29. Stan places a $1 pre authorisation for 1 week and refund it as it say. Hopefully it does the same. But the coupon comes pretty quick.

    If anyone wants a code:
    2R9USFX8

    • Cheers for that

  • Signed up earlier today but still have not received a code :(

Sent them an email but no response.

Check all your inboxes; my confirmation email went to my usual inbox, but the actual code/voucher email went to my "promotional emails" box (so check "spam" folder, "junkmail" folder, etc.).

      • Found it in another inbox! Thanks for the heads up :)

  • Would anyone know if there is a way to stream .avi files from an iPhone device with a Chromecast?

  • -2

I sold my old Apple TV 2nd generation for $220 late last year. Finally with Chromecast less than $30 I could not resist buying it. Hopefully it is all worth while!

  • Question about chromecast: my videos (avi, mp4, mkv) and subtitles (srt) are stored on a synology nas. I want to stream the videos with subtitles to a tv. Can the chromecast accomplish this?

    • Plex

      • Chuckle, you're a m(unc)an of few words! Just one word in fact; and it's not even a long word! Love it. I need to learn to be as succinct and concise as this.

      • Thanks for the info. Just looked through plex's nas compatibility list, my nas doesn't support transcoding, which is required for subtitles. Guess no go for me.

        • I had the same issue with my ReadyNAS, it supports Plex but without transcoding. So my setup is now NAS + MacMini + Chromecasts.
I managed to get away with ReadyNAS + BoxeeBox for a while, but the interface was too 2011. There is a 'Plexee' app for BoxeeBox, but it was just too damn slow for me (probably due to the slow ReadyNAS).

did you try DS video station?

    • I would suggest BubbleUPnP for Android, works great with Chromecast and can stream from the Synology (assuming you've got the Media Server running). You then download the subtitles to your phone and load them once you've opened up your video.

  • Thanks OP.

Received the code almost instantaneously, but it's not being recognised: Coupon code "xxxxxxxx" is not valid.

    Is there a wait time?

    • It's all good, need to use the link in the email.

  • +2

I'm an existing Stan subscriber and, after contacting support was provided with a voucher code to use to buy the chrome cast within minutes. Fantastic service!

  • I am getting a price of $33.05 for click and collect as delivery is normally $5.95.
How are people getting the larger discounts?

Perhaps Dick has just dropped delivery prices and I missed out.

    • +1

Chromecast back to $49 on the DS website hence the price increase to $33.05. Previous price was $45 before discount.

  • Thanks OP.
Code arrived within minutes, Chromecast purchased!
Sweet deal, especially after Harvey Norman debacle.

  • Sure, get a ChromeCast to watch Netflix :D

  • Kicking myself for leaving it so late, but I guess it's only $4.00 more. Thanks OP!

    • haha same here, ozb hesitation regret

  • Dick Smith is jerking me around with the "collect" part of click-and-collect.

Tried to call them to confirm the order, but the phone rang out. Turned up in-store more than 24 hours after placing order, only to be told that there were none in stock, and they 'hadn't gotten around' to calling people to tell them.

They were trying to get more in stock, and were 'sure' they would be in stock this morning. After trying and failing to get in touch via phone AGAIN, my wife turned up in store, only to be told that they 'hoped' to have them in by lunchtime.

I have since tried another three times to call them on the phone, only to have the phone ring out (seriously, what kind of electronics store doesn't have an automated voice message system). I'll be heading in there after work, hoping against hope that something has happened.

Got the same jerk-around (at a different DSE store) with my PS4 click n collect order. Won't be falling for this again. Appalling service.

Maybe your store ran out of stock between you ordering and them reserving stock to orders? In which case, chillax - one day your Chromecast will come. Surely they have a record of paid and unallocated orders, and will get to yours when the Chromecast fairy visits your store.

    • I've had an order acknowledgement on Saturday afternoon, but that's it. Checked the store I wanted to collect from online today and showed it had stock. Will wait till tomorrow. I did send the online team an e-mail enquiry.
