2013 Brown Brothers 18 Eight Nine Shiraz wins Trophy for BEST SHIRAZ at the 2015 Sydney Royal Wine Show. This is a great result for Brown Brothers and at $12.99 each (plus delivery*) is a bargain. (Dan Murphy's $14.60) "Medium-bodied in style. This wine has fantastic lifted aromas of red and dark berry fruits and the classic pepper notes of Heathcote Shiraz. These aromas follow through to the palate which has generous juicy fruit and a fine tannin structure. This supple Shiraz drinks well now but cellaring for 3 to 5 years from vintage will add complexity" $12.99 each (was $19.99) Save $84 a dozen. (Delivery fees: $5.95 per dozen or part thereof to metro Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne & Adelaide. $6.95 to metro Perth & Hobart. Higher for regional and country areas. Class No. 34 / Cat No. 156 2013 18 EIGHTY NINE SHIRAZGrange may have been in the running for the best Shiraz-dominant blend.
Penfolds stopped entering Grange in wines shows in the 1980s.
Even if you are skeptical about wine judging - its a very good bet this a wine
with broad appeal and this is a good price.
Grange is a shiraz. 15% other varieties are allowed without having to name them. Grange sometimes has around 3% cabernet, but have you ever heard of 'Grange Shiraz-Cabernet'? Not recently.
Wine show results are often pretty random. If not, the same wines would win all the competitions. This doesn't happen that often.
I guess those judges are not always consistent in blind test, I wonder if those wine critics blind test first, if not they're easily biased
Trophy for best Shiraz, eh? The Penfolds Grange team must have been very disappointed.
