  • :( i was just there last weekend and bought a bike

feel guilty without buying, so just pass, sorry for not being a geniue ozbargainer…

  • yeah not going to Glebe for that

  • Although this is a nice gesture, it looks like the product isn't all that useful as a bike tool since it doesn't have any hex wrenches.

Bottle openers are a 'dime a dozen' - I've got heaps of them since they give them out at many events as promo items.

This piece of stamped sheet metal definitely isn't worth $10.

    • It is actually useful to me. I have an alfine hub so have to carry a spanner on my saddlebag to remove the rear wheel for a tube change. I lost the spanner, so need another. It is actually a tool I have to carry with me when riding as opposed to hex spanners, which are unlikely ever to be 100% needed while riding.

      • what are those hubs like? seen them around, my initial impression was that they were needlessly complicated but is it worth it?

        • You can use a chain guard with those since the chain doesn't move, which is a plus for keeping your pants clean.

With an internal hub, you don't need to be pedalling to change gears, but the range will be less than what derailleur gears are capable of. And they're also heavier.

        • @happychappy1: I know all that, but my understanding is that those shimano hubs immerse the gears in an oil bath. Also electronic shifters. Just wondering if they are any good or over the top.

        • @paizuri: Alfine are mechanical shifted, no electronics. I think the tool is more so you can remove the wheel to change the tube, as opposed to actually servicing the hub gears.

PS I have no experience servicing these. But I think its probably more convenient for you due to less dirt.

Whether it's worth it is up to you - i.e., do you prefer having less to clean (as in dirt on derailleurs and cassette) or do you want more gear range (which derailleur systems are better at). This is really a heavier weight and ease of maintenance vs. lighter weight and more flexibility + downside of having more cleaning.

    • It is actually cheaper than a Dime @dozen

      It's free. Just sayin' :D

  • make sure you don't drink and ride

    • +3

      But it's so much fun.

  • nvm

  • Imagine this deal as car keys…mein got.

  • Here I was thinking there was a bike shop at Reid, Canberra :(
