So Telstra just upped my bandwidth to 500GB from 200GB

https://i.imgur.com/h4a7YKy.png

I wonder why? Was this targeted or did anyone other Telstra customers get this too?

No Optus lines in my area and couldn't get the $90 Unlimited bundle so I was going to upgrade my plan to Telstra's $150 500GB plan next week. So I just saved $70 a month.

Update

Lots of others have had their plans upgraded also. It seems to be certain plans and being on or off contract doesn't matter. A third rollout for the extra data is happening this Sunday. http://whrl.pl/RefOHr

Update 2

Here are the plans that have been/will be upgraded. Stolen directly from Whirlpool. https://imgur.com/EG0BbL6,nvY6Nso,GVkLY6f,prZPYwA,DMauI93,C8…

  • Is this cable or ADSL? NVm that's ADSL.

    • +3

Is there that same promo for cable cause I keep using up all the 200gbs lol

      • Have you been using your three free top-ups (per year)? That's a nice Telstra bonus.

        • I bloody use up all of them lol

      • List of all the plans and dates for upgrades. :)
        http://goo.gl/YDzPSu

  • Targeted would assume. 200GB here, been a customer for ages (not a huge one, but $5/6/7000 in the last 5 years maybe?) and nothing.

    • Hmmm maybe you'll get it soon? I just got it and i've only been with them for a year.

      Am on the 200GB bundle.

    • +1

Same, have 200gb cable and nothing. been customer for years. might switch to iinet for netflix if they don't offer a free upgrade

      • maybe its bundled customers.

        • I'm on a bundle. The one now called Medium.

  • +2

how much are you paying wonderboy ?

I pay $80 for 200gb / mth with home ph line (after $10 disc / mth)

my plan is Telstra T-Bundle Connector™ FreeStyler

    • +3

      WHAT WERE YOU ON BEFORE?

      DIAL UP?

      • +9

Tin can and two strings. The shouting is probably a force of habit of having to talk into the can loudly enough for the sound to travel to the other can.

      • prob adsl 1 like a lot of people.

        • I was on adsl 1 before at 3mbps

      • WHAT WERE YOU ON BEFORE?

        THIS

    • Don't worry, I'm not promoting them. I don't care much for Telstra. I wouldn't be with them if they didn't have a monopoly in my area.

i am with telstra i pay $150.00 a month for 25 gig sucks when i see what you get

  • +5

my father who is on $9.98 for 2 Gb has been bumped up to 50 Gb

    • That is pretty competitive.

    • Do you have a link to the Telstra $9.98 deal? Thanks.

      • +1

this is it, but now has a download limit of 50 Gb

        • Thanks for the link :)

    • Similar thing here with my parents. 5Gb to 50Gb.

  • Maybe so people might sign up for whatever streaming service they are part of?

  • I just got Telstra's email, mine is bumped up to 200GB frm 100GB. It is quite a nice surprise.

  • I got bumped from 500GB to 1TB, I am on bigpond cable.

  • +6

They upped your bandwidth or your download limit? Aren't they two different things? I thought bandwidth is a measure of the connection speed.

    • +4

      Yes, he means download limit.

It would be terrific to have bandwidth measured in gigabytes !!

  • I also got the same, from 500GB to 1000GB, can't seem to find anything about it on the website however.

EDIT: Just checked the webmail, and saw the email. Sweet. :D

  • Data increased from 200Gb -> 500Gb for me (cable).

Email arrived yesterday and definitely a nice surprise!

  • Mine just got bumped from 500GB to 1TB ADSL2. Nice Surprise!

  • very interested to know how they are determining who gets bumped up? Been with bigpond for longer than 5 years on cable but still on 200gb right now.

    • Same. The 3rd round of deployment is this weekend so we might be lucky and get upgraded then.

  • Just looked at my account, was 100GB, now have 200GB. YAY for meeee!!!

  • Can also confirm, cable ultimate 500gb doubled to 1TB.

My suspicion is that they need to sweeten the deal with customers, what with Optus offering home broadband un-metered netflix and others (TPG) unlimited.

Laughable really considering all the trouble I've had with telstra cable in the first year or so :)

That being said i have used a telstra sim for the last 10+ years so that might count for something!

  • +1

Hmm mine is still the same 200gb, but i still get full speed if i do manage to get over 200gb.

  • +1

It worked for Belong broadband as well, up from 250 to 500.
    So say 'part' of Telstra

They gave double for 3 months of summer and have now made permanent.
Just checked, you now get 500GB from the get go if you sign up.

  • Holy moly, yes I got 1TB up from 500GB fantastic been craving for 1TB!

  • +8

If only we'd gotten a real NBN, we wouldn't be talking about 'limits'.

It's 2015, we really shouldn't be worried about whether or not we'll hit a 'data cap'.

  • Same here bumped up from 200Gb to 500GB. Been with them for 2 years now with cable earlier and now ADSL2 ( No cable in current location)

Also have the T-Box and mobile pre-paid phones with Telstra.

  • There's a long thread on whirlpool about this. Also a rumour that Telstra will be implementing some much better value plans.

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2345654&p…

  • just checked mine, it's gone up from 200GB to 500GB on cable. Cool, I was always hitting my limit.

  • +1

I noticed last Sunday that my 500 GB cable plan had been upgraded to 1000 GB, and got the email yesterday. It's the only service I have with Telstra (nothing else bundled) and I've only had it for about 9 months. I have never used any of the 3 free top-ups per year.

    • Now you will never have to use those top-ups. I've already used 2 this year on my 200GB plan. I doubt I will ever come close to using 500GB.

      • And I probably won't come close to 1 TB either. The most I've ever used in total (which includes 2 ADSL services) is about 700 GB. Also, I forgot that the cable service is not the only thing I have with Telstra. I also have a more-recently acquired mobile plan.

  • +1 i just got upgradeD from 500gb to 1000gb awesome :D

  • Well, to be honest they prices were huge. I was on their cable plan but when I moved their cable was unavailable. After shopping around a little and seeing that their ADSL2 plan costs the same as their cable one (:| how the…) and it was A LOT more expensive then all the similar offers I went with iinet.

They tried to convince me their services are better but considering (after my last house move with them) I calculated that 10% of the time their internet was down for me so lets see if the grass is greener on the other side.

  • I got a notice when I logged into My Telstra Account saying I've been given a data allowance upgrade, but once I clicked it OK nothing happened. There's no changes on my account and no email yet. Hopefully its changes in the next billing period.

  • Optus $90/month internet + home phone user here. I just checked out their new plans.

I must say that they're much better in value than previously. However, it's still more economical to stick with Optus' Unlimited plan for $90/month instead of Telstra's 500 GB for $113/month.

  • +1

    Hmmm… so if I'm on a 500GB bundle and drop to a 200GB bundle, would I now get 400GB?
If so that's one way of saving $20 a month if I don't use 500GB…

  • Hoping I get something. I'm on the 200GB Ultimate Cable bundle.
Looking at the attachment I'm not hopeful though.

Edit: oh, didn't realise there were multiple pages. Looks like I may be getting it this weekend! Here I was thinking of upping my data with the release of Netflix and other streaming services!

  • They are doing a lot of heavy marketing currently. I have had three flyers in the last week. I think its an attempt to try and get people to stay and not abandon them for the NBN.

  • Now if they only upgrade their upload speed caps on Cable I'd be much happier. I'm a sad panda that this area doesn't have NBN access.

  • +2

Thank your creating this thread, I had no idea about this…

I was on the "Complete Home Saver 200GB bundle" plan, went onto Telstra's online chat after reading this thread, and reading the Whirlpool threads, and now I'm on the Complete Home Saver 500GB bundle… so I'm VERY happy and will definitely be giving Netflix a trial now :)

The online chat guy upgraded mine instantly, I'm already seeing the bigger quota :D

    • how much you paying?

      Any change in price?

Are you on any tconnector bundle?

      • I'm paying $88 a month, which is now for 500Gb and includes the phone line rental. So, no change in price, just an increase from 200Gb to 500Gb. I'm not on the tconnector bundle.

  • Will this upgrade be applied for people who has a tbundle plan, with $20 bundle discount?

  • +2

seem like global bundles aren't part of upgrades :-(

  • Booya, just checked my data allowance and have seen that my bonus has already been applied… I was worried I didn't have enough data for Netflix before but with 1TB I should have a bit to spare.

    • how much you pay?

      what bundles, bonus you get?

      • I'm paying $225 for T-Bundle Connector Edge and Foxtel HD Platinum, so was 500GB now up to 1000.

  • Just checked mine and its blank :S Tt still says 500GB allowance but its not showing any record for this month, just 12 days till the next cycle. Maybe its unlimited :D lol

  • What about new customers? Are they left out? That seems completely opposite from the usual, commonly practiced marketing strategy of attracting new customers.

    • Maybe they are doing this because they are gonna release new plans with the same data as these upgrades..

But they give these free upgrades first before releasing the plans..

To keep the current customer base happy…

Rather than releasing the new plans, and then the current customer based might get pissed off and start looking at alternative isp which might be more attractive (ie unlimited data - optus, or unmetered netflix - iinet )

      • Can't wait to see the new plans. I am considering getting cable for a while but always being put off because of their ridiculously expensive price

  • According to whirlpool there will be new plans that are much cheaper than they are today.

Also, Telstra has published a note to say that all existing plans will be upgraded according to a link on whirlpool.

    • Do you know when the new plans are available?

      • The rumour is the next couple of weeks but it is just that, a rumour. Given what they are doing with upping people's data (i had mine increased from 200GB to 500GB overnight), better value plans for new customers seems inevitable.

  • Is speed the deciding factor of choosing ADSL or Cable? (monthly pricing is similar now)

Optus cable top speed premium ranges from 50mbps to 100mbps (correct me if i am wrong)
It is now offered with the $90 promo
NOTE: Max speed is 100mbps; NBN equivalent. 50mbps minimum speed is awesome already in my mind.

Is there any other deal better than this? Will we be OK with a minimum 50mbps?

Although Telstra is giving you more data(GB's), if you are far from the node, you may suffer in speeds with ADSL2+.
If Optus Cable is available min speeds are 50mbps

With crappy speeds it will be hard to use up all 500gb/mth.

    • May not be that hard to use up 500GB. From memory, Tel$tra count both upload and download.

      • ok. then optus has sold me.
        Optus cable it is

        • +1

Upload usage is generally very small though. Obviously will vary for everyone, though out of 200GB my upload usage is usually 6-7GB of that. Not to mention that upload speeds are generally very slow anyway.

Merged from Anyone Else Just Have Their Monthly Broadband Data Doubled by Telstra?

I am gobsmacked. Here's the SMS I just received, and I have checked by logging into my account - it appears legit.

"A nice surrise: Bonus data every month. To thank you for being with Telstra, we're giving you an extra 500.0GB home broadband data every month at no extra cost. There's nothing you need to do, your data has been added to your plan. Enjoy!".

I'm guessing they'll limit bandwidth by cracking down on piracy. If so joke's on them as I have managed to eat up my 500GB on more than one occasion without having to pirate anything. Astronomy data catalogs for example can a couple of hundreds GB. Even so I certainly don't use it every month. I can pretty much treat this as unlimited for all practical purposes.

I've been with Telstra since '98 if anyone's curious. I've had 2 major outages and a couple of more minor ones, and a smattering of very short ones. Also two billing headaches if I recall changing plans. Overall it's been quite good though not flawless. Still I can't fault this move. I doubt I can take a step down in plans without losing this (and I'm recontracted anyway for now) so it's not a cost saving but it does mean I don't have to watch my data anymore. In fact I can have 1.5-2TB if 3 months a year depending on how they apply their double data 3 times a year top ups.

  • They do this upgrade for users who consistently don't use 200gb. The assumption is that because they never go over 200gb, although they will have access to more internet, they will never actually have to deal with more bandwidth. The result is that you feel appreciative of Telstra for free, while they lose no money at all.

    • Interesting point. I have averaged about 65% of my 500GB over the last 6 months and have had mine bumped up.

      • I have averaged even more, around 90% over the last year, and requested one of the "free" data bump a few months ago. Still got mine bumped up as well.

    • Not true. I almost always go over my 200GB limit. Usually on the 2nd last day of the month i do a heap of downloading and go well over the limit. They slow to 256kb so it is still usable for a day. Last month i used around 400GB. I had mine increased from 200GB to 500GB overnight.

      • You use 200gb in 2 days at 256kb?

    • Well that's just mucking around with stats, isn't it? How many people resist going over 200Gb because they know that's the limit?

  • The family home has just been bumped from 500GB to 1TB. Gonna download Star Citizen 10 times.

  • Mine has just been updated from 200GB to 500GB (Elite Liberty Cable) :D

  • Just got offered this cable deal over the phone:

    • 500GB $69.95/mth
    • Modem repayment $6/mth
    • Free Professional install
    • Phone line rental $14/mth
    • $59 connection fee
    • 24mths plan

All up $91/mth. Is it a good deal and should I sign up? Would I be able to do better?

    • +1

Interesting. How did you ask them?

      • I just called and said I want to switch from Optus, sales tried to offer me the plans that are on the website and I said I heard about current plans having their data doubled and wanted the best deal.

I'll try and get speed boost thrown in as well.

        • Yeah, I got the same offer by mentioning your offer. I am also trying to get the speedboost through in for free though not yet successful. Any suggestion?

    • No speedboost though.

  • Just checked my account and I've been bumped from my 200gb plan to a 500gb plan. My monthly usage with 2 days to go went from 29% to 12%.
Very nice of Telstra to do this.
Now what am I going to do with my new found fortune? I've never gone close to using my 200gb let alone the 500gb.

    • Watch some Netflix. I watched house of cards and two other shows the other day and it used about 10gb.

    • Which plan are you on?

      • I was on the 200gb liberty elite and have been moved to the 500gb liberty elite.
IThat was a family friends deal for $80 per month.

  • has anyone downgraded there 500GB plan after receiving upgrade to 1TB to 200GB and still received a bonus to 300GB. In other terms paying $20/pm less to have the same plan

    • That's what I'd like to do, but thought I'd wait to see what new plans they come up with.

  • i had 500gb Cable, Telstra gave me an extra 500gb now i got 1TB
