  • 4G is now showing on their plans

You'd think they'd let their customers know it was available????

    • Yes a mail out would have been useful.
I ordered some SIMs on the weekend and noticed the site being updated.

      • +1

I've still got another 11 months on my Virgin contract.

Might switch over after that since this will essentially be the same service now…

  • +1

I thought they would come with better deals on the 4G.

    • Cannot see the advantage to data charges $72gb (whole$ale ntwk) versus $10gb direct on optus, $45/mo in light of this data drop.

      The astute here might already know Optusnet lag Vodafone in the most recent independent survey conducted of our tel-cos. pp.21 Summary;
4G-preferred data, Small cities & towns
      Optus 26/42; Telstra40/42✓;Voda 28/42;

3G in Smaller Cities and Towns — Vodafone
climbed past Optus to take a close second.
pp.20 Telstra // dropped behind both
      rivals
      on some of the upload
      tests. Optus lagged its competitors
somewhat on some of the download
      tests, and had some problems
      with HD YouTube playback

in the smaller cities and towns.

Paying above the plan for international calls may also be a bummer on Optus compared to Vodafone.
However I'm pleased to see 15% off Voda from Woolworths til the end of March. So $42.50 for a comprehensive plan ahead of Optus [3.5gb-~unli/100gb], which when I apply last week's woolies Groupon 81 for 100 eGift card, becomes 34.43 versus $55 Amaysim.

Please don't neg the messenger. reviews are interesting and assessments are what make ozb the great + savvy community it is today Peace.

Looks like in the shuffling around they have shaved the regular"unlimited" deal from 5GB to 4GB per month and added a larger "Unlimited 6GB" plan for more money, of course, ($54 per month) which is too much, I think.
On the plus side everything is 4G now.

    • +1

i would have been happy to keep my current 3G plan at a reduced rate i.e $35

      • +2

"If you’d prefer to hang onto your 5GB inclusion and you’re an existing Unlimited customer, you can elect to stay on your existing plan, which will be grandfathered you’ll keep your 5GB allowance. However, you’ll also stay on the 3G network" LifeHacker.

  • I couldn't find the post paid $0 contract plan. It has similar rates to "As You Go", but is post paid. Have amaysim deleted it?

    • looks like it.

Luckily i have one on the side just for receiving calls. Ill be keeping that for a long long time lol

I also have a old old voda $0 plan that im still holding on to

  • Apart from the Unlimited plan deals this month, I think the best is the "As You Go" $5 SIM and add a data pack.
Its a cheap enough way to get 4G data for an iPad, WiFi modem etc or just a $5 phone for 90 days per recharge.

  • +2

Guys, just a note that the 4G plans (AS YOU GO, all the NEW UNLIMITED plans and amaysim FLEXI) are charged per KB instead of MB. Ppl on the 3G plan can stay on the 3G plan if they wish BUT it will be still the 1MB increments and whatnot.

    • +1

they say 1MB increments but im on the 3G plan and they charge me by KB

      • Im sure amaysim charge per MB. If your phone was to keep data sessions open then you wouldnt really notice much difference but otherwise… yeah lol

        • ive never really noticed them charging me by the MB. Maybe bc ive been a customers for 3+ years and they still charge me the old way ??

        • @easternculture: I won't rule that out. I mean amaysim launched with AYG only, then introduced the data packs before introducing UNLIMITED. maybe somewhere along the line it changed.

As a legacy customer, you may also have access to call conferencing (dont quote me on that one). It was disabled by default on the newer account and then they had no way of changing it from then on lol.

        • @ReSublimity:

As a legacy customer, you may also have access to call conferencing (dont quote me on that one).

Ill have to try that one. Would be sweet if i have access to it

        • @easternculture: Hahaha yeah, i forgot if you had to request for it to be activated back in the days or it came on by default…

        • +1

          @ReSublimity:

Thanks for the tip. Ill try tomorrow when people are awake :)

        • +2

          This person's awake - barely.
Interesting, but v.sleepy last refresh of the deal feed.

EC, MB increment rounding since Amaysim's inception was my understanding,

I'm definitely (by all appearances) now on KB billing.
Increase from 5c/MB to 7.2c/MB for AYG (and excess) data as a penalty.

Just switched my current 3G plan, with the option to do so (much like Yatango did with their 4G switchover) presented on a - new, different - account page.
Took about 2 minutes to activate instead of the 3 hours referenced.

I've been maintaining an Amaysim account for the last couple of years, just by adding minimum amounts to my balance only when necessary. Recently reached $100 and decided to activate a 10GB pack, for tablet use.
First experience with Amaysim live-chat. Went well, was pleasant.

The KB billing change (given current market direction) was a lock, but rumours were that the new 4G plans would be as much as 10 dollars dearer.

As an outcome, the lopping of 1GB in allowance off the 'Unlimited' plan is probably the best-case-scenario result for most customers.

KT, that - and the ease of switching - warrants a + from me.

        • @Tas:
          Cheers.
Amaysim allegedly say that the change from per KB rounding, rather than per MB rounding means a better deal @ 4GB than 5GB on 3G, assuming the users is in a 4G area as noted in the linked Lifehacker article, but I think its rather hard to analyse as many unknown factors such as session length and hardware type would come into play.

        • +1

@King Tightarse: Yes, for a not insignificant number of people, and not just because of 'known' data-usage patterns, I have come to believe that a very significant chunk of other data is lost to MB rounding - and not just because of signal dropouts.

I have at this point read enough to believe that the behaviour of the 'Google Play Services' app in particular is a major culprit, unwittingly (for most Android users) waking up their screen-off devices for data exchange - on a very regular basis. You can disable/control its behaviour on different levels on a rooted device, but if on an un-rooted device with a MB rounding plan attached - you are significantly 'rooted' in a different way…

        • @Tas:
You can always drop it on concrete, the definite way to have it rooted.
Yeah the old per MB billing thing can be a problem. Sometimes its not at all. I think the length that the company keeps a session open for is quite a factor. I once saw a huge Vodafone print out from an iPhone that had tiny KB micro-sessions every minute or so rounded to the MB. That could get expensive really fast. Kind of like a dripping tap to the water bill.

  • Hmm.. deciding between this or the Boost $20 plan starting on 31/3.

    • Still with the deceptive MB - never get what you pay for and no lte in sight.

      • +1

        I believe it's kb charging starting 31/3.

        • yes perhaps.
either way • Once you've used your Inc Data, you'll be charged the PAYG rate of $2/MB [vs. 7c] a sucky practice.
          (old 3G,
          15days/100 mins).

  • +1

Yes charge by kilobytes is part of the change (according to some material sent by their marketing yesterday). However I also noticed that data is now charged at 7.2c/MB rather than 5c/MB.

4G isn't that useful to me (yet) as I am still on an old 3G phone…

    • If you're ok with the AYG/excess increase, still worth switching over (option presents on your account page) for the KB rounding.

As far as continuing to use your phone - it's a case of ''As you were, Scotty''…
Your phone - on 3G - will continue working just fine.

      • +3

Actually I am already a customer just looking at the latest change —

        • kb data increment — yeah
        • 4G/LTE — meh
        • 7.2c/MB excess — argh
        • +1

I was already a customer (still-active account), too. Made the switch earlier this morning - for data use on a 3G tab. See comments ^^

Edit: Can confirm that data is working fine on my 3G tab. Received switchover confirmation message from Amaysim about an hour ago. Confirmation was much quicker on the account page itself.

  • If you go over your 4GB limit of included data, you’ll be charged at the
rate of 7.2c per MB, with each session rounded up to the nearest 1KB

    • +1

They have a handy little spill over bolt on now. You can get 300MB for $4.90 if you need a tiny bit extra at the end of the month or you can buy a 1/2.5/4GB data pack as per the OP.

      • +2

Best ring them and ask for a 100mb. They have done it for free for me a few times when im nearly at the start of my billing cycle.

  • +2

Just be mindful if you have all you inclusions for the month in your plan. Im on flexi and had just renewed 2 days ago. After switching to 4G all my inclusions and data pack value disappeared. I got them all back after a call to tech support though. So maybe do a screen grab before you switch just to be sure.

I was thinking about switching to Boost anyway as they charge 1kb increments. So this came at a good time. My data was disappearing very quickly, more so than my data counter's number. So I'll see how this goes.

Also noticed that flexi now includes free sms to other Amaysim accounts. This is new. Previously only calls were included.

  • +3

Pursuant to my comments above - lest anyone think that I'm a particular fan of Amaysim…

I have my own reasons for having maintained an account, with numbers kept solely for receiving calls and texts sometimes being very useful.

For people on PAYG data and given the increase involved, switching to the 4G + KB billing option is certainly something to balance up very carefully.

If you are on a monthly plan with data-pack attached, and running way over into excess, also think very carefully about switching. The KB billing may bring you back from going over, but it might not.

For most other people who are skating near to their pack limit - or just going over a bit - the switchover will likely be of benefit. Hence, the recommendation.

This, of course, is all in the context of people who are otherwise happy with Amaysim.
Depending on your particular data/call/text pattern, there are lots of likely-for-you keener deals out there.

In multiple deal and forum posts, these are now pretty much all covered within any given month, on OzBargain.

    Thanks for the post OP.

How come this is the first time that I hear about them now/recently going 4G?, I'm with them (PAYG/Prepaid).
As it was said by another poster, as well as their lack of letting people know.
I'm pretty sure I got no email about this change.

I have been very happy with amaysim and I have no problems recommending them.
Only proplem I had was when I signed up, they had gone from the $10 referral credit to just $5, then a few weeks later went back to the previous amount, so I got screwed on that.

Thanks on advising about the increase on Data, 5c/mb to 7.2, that sucks.
I cant recall if I was charged per kB or in mB, as I dont use my phone much or use much data, atm.

So I have to chose to switch from old 3G plan to 4G?, or is it just 4G only now?, I dont have to check now.

    • +1

As far as I know, its up to you.
If you have an existing plan account such as the "Unlimited" one, you can stay on 3G and get 5GB rounded to the MB. If you start a new one it will be 4G with KB billing from the get-go. I got an email this morning re-iterating that the add-on data packs are all going 4G.
Just log in to your account and have a chat to them via the pop up chat window or call up.

I have a 10GB plan on the PAYG, and got an email that ill be upgraded automatically.

We'll be upgrading your AS YOU GO plan and 10GB Data Pack to the superfast Optus 4G Plus network on or before 4 May, 2015. We'll take care of everything for you, so you can sit back, relax and do nothing. You don't even need to swap your SIM card – it's already 4G ready!

Looks like they are trying to get users off the PAYG plans

    • -1

There is absolutely no indication that they are trying to kick users off "As You Go". They are actively advertising it along with all the other plans.
I think everyone got that email and it just indicates they are upgrading the data packs to 4G. Prices remain exactly the same and are quite good value. Actually, its even better than before because it is now per KB rounding for the same price.
The sweet spot is the 4GB pack for $29.90 it equates to 0.0073c per MB

      • -2

The sweet spot is the 4GB pack for $29.90 it equates to 0.0073c per MB

Really !! Its always been 4GB for $29.90 and nothing has changed. Is this an attempt to deceive people in thinking that its a new plan?

The sweet spot was having a PAYG plan which you pay NOTHING for rather than $5 every 90 days !!

        • -1

Yes same price for the same amount of data but counted per KB now as opposed to per MB previously and 4G now. That makes it up to 1GB better value in real terms.
Read more in this review here:
          http://www.lifehacker.com.au/tags/amaysim/

        • @King Tightarse:

and then get charged 7.2c/MB excess instead of 5c/MB , plus your paying $1.33 extra per month ($5 per 90 days)

        • @King Tightarse: @easternculture:
a simple gig over would cost next month's fee..& then some.

        • @daver:

exactly. they did their calculations right.

Yes they charge per kb, but it doesnt matter in real life as no one use's 50kb per session these days. The days of GPRS/EDGE are gone.

You start a session, check your facebook, watsapp, an email or 2, etc and there goes 10mb data.

  • Ha ha negs all my comments now.
Give it up Easty, just let it go mate.

  • Alas…you 'd appear in the same boat, given 7.xc/MB ..that's up 600% cf. 'retail =$0.01 per MB ie$10gb? So the gap only widens.
