  • Good router, though I can't get my open VPN to work.

    • OpenVPN can be difficult to get working.

Did you try testing your configuration with something more simple like PPTP?

      • Unfortunately the router only supports open VPN. Not sure if I need to configure anything on my vdsl2 modem.

  • -3

    looks like a dalek

  • give about $30 with this on special how does this router compare to the tplink d7 (which i was going to pickup this weekend)?

    • Plenty of reviews on whirlpool, cnet, pcmag etc. Both seem pretty well reviewed.

      • been through most of the reviews but was wondering if anybody has used both as i cannot find d7 vr7000.
I was wondering if the difference in price equated made it worth it to get the r7000

        • +3

Sorry, can't help personally. I think there was one data point on whirlpool of one fellow achieving slightly better data transfer rate with the r7000 vs d7 but these both seem to be top of the range for home users. I've just bought the r7000 because i have some other netgear stuff (extender for granny flat) and hoped it might work better together than my dusty old billion 7700n, which is struggling.

        • +9

          Differences between R7000 and TP-Link Archer D7:

          • R7000 is a router, D7 is an ADSL modem router
          • R7000 supports USB 3.0, D7 is USB 2.0
          • R7000 uses Broadcom chipset, D7 uses Qualcomm Atheros chipset
          • Routers generally have better custom firmware support, ADSL modem routers, you pretty much have to use the manufacturer provided ones.

They are different types of network devices. With R7000, to connect to ADSL, you need an ADSL modem.

        • +3

          @prolo:

I ended up flashing the firmware of an old Linksys E1500 router in order to serve my granny flat & it does an amazing job. The extenders were no where as good (or as configurable).

FYI, for anyone in a similar situation.

          :)

        • @Geekomatic: TP-Link Archer c5 / c7 are amazing with OpenWrt. The only difference in hardware between c5 and c7 is the c7 has a higher speed wireless ac than the c5s ac speed. The rest of the internals are identical so c5 is a great buy.

        • @netsurfer: Hi, I have ADSL2+ with average speed around 12Mbps, but when I'm in my room, the speed goes down to 3-4Mbps(3 meters away from the wireless modem, but separated by a wooden door). My question is do I really need this wireless router to improve my internet speed? I have chromecast in my room, and it doesn't run smoothly, unlike the chromecast in my living room that runs perfectly fine. Thanks.

        • @canon1989: 3 meters away, the speed shouldn't drop that much. Wifi signal travels in a straight line normally. Are there any big solid objects between the router and the chromecast in your room?

          Some suggestions:

          • Move the wireless modem router around, see if it help. If possible, move it higher. A router on the floor or close to the floor is no good.
          • Try another device in the room (laptop, tablet or smartphone) and see if that device also has the same wifi performance drop issue. If you have an app that can check the wifi signal strength, that would be good (give you a rough picture of whether the whole room has bad wifi signals or only at certain spots; plus any other neighbour's wifi networks in the same channel). Some programs are: Inssider, Vistumbler, WifiAnalyzer (android).

The latest gen routers generally provide better range and faster speed even at 2.4GHz (compared with first gen wireless N/600 routers). They also have faster CPU to handle more connections concurrently. 5 Ghz, the latest gen definitely improves a lot though the limitation of 5Ghz (in terms of range) still applies.

        • @netsurfer: Thanks for replying. I tried everything with no luck, I really dont understand why. Therefore in terms of how much I need it, should I just buy it? Or any cheaper router will do the job if I connect it to my modem and extend it all the way to my room?(I have roommates, so it's not possible to drag the modem to my room)

        • @canon1989: Need more information from you. Is the modem router in the living room? Are you using 2.4GHz or 5GHz for the chromecast in your room? Also, where exactly is a modem router located? Is it on a table or on the ground? If it is quite close to the ground, any chance for you to get some boxes or books to temporary raise its position?

How about other devices in your room? Is it just the Chromecast that's slow? Since you have two, you could swap them temporary to rule out it is a faulty Chromecast issue.

3 meters isn't something an old router would struggle, which suggests there could be a different issue. Is it exactly 3 meters (that would mean your room is right next to it)? Which modem / router are you currently using?

Currently, there is insufficient information for me to determine whether the issue is (1) weak wifi signal in your room or (2) strong wifi signal, but slow network transfer speed. The more information you can provide, the better.

        • @netsurfer: Thanks again for your reply. I purchased the router from OW and it is the best money I have ever spent. I constantly get 12-14Mbps in my room. FYI, the modem is in the living room just at the back of my TV. So, no it's not on the ground. After getting the R7000, I tried testing the speed in the living room and in my room, same results. Very happy with it.

My current modem may be outdated, it's the one with no antenna, but has wifi(that could be the reason). Chromecast also works like a charm now in my bedroom. Thanks again @netsurfer for your kindness :))

        • @canon1989: Good to know your issue is resolved with the router. It is a good price for that router after the price match. Separate router and modem is generally a better setup.

    Great router.

$165 delivered, Australian seller with good feedback and in stock, also on ebay. http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/261391697402

    • -3

      Why the neg

    • +6

Better deal and cheaper too at $165 and is in stock.

Not a group buy either. I wonder if Wireless1 even has it in stock or is it a groupbuy thing where they get a bunch of orders and then they order it from a supplier.

Makes me wonder why would you buy it for $169 free delivery when another power seller has it for $165 free delivery that's actually "in stock"?. This is Ozbargain after all.

      • I notice on one of those links that ShoppingExpress eBay store selling it for $165 free delivery. Wireless1 deal isn't so good compared to that.

I say like again why would you buy this from Wireless1 for $169 free delivery when the likes of ShoppingExpress has it going for $165 with free delivery?. Makes no sense on Ozbargain why you would pay the higher price.

    • I was about to purchase a R7000 yesterday and the cheapest I found was $190 on the Wireless1 website. The cheapest on ebay was $200. I found many expired deals on Ozbargain and thought I could wait for another one..

Thanks for pointing out a better deal!

i recently bought this router to superseed my Netgear wndr3700.

i live in a double story house, with the R7000 nighthawk, upstairs now gets 5 bars(full) wireless signal compared to 2 bars previously on the 3700.

currently bridged to my cisco dpq3925.

just needed a new router with more powerful antennas.

i picked this over the asus because it looks awesome, and can wallmount later on.

    • Just wondering, how is the wireless reception downstairs?
And can I assume you're using 2.4GHz wifi and not 5GHz?

      • downstairs is also 5 bars, i have tested with iphones, laptops, ipads, and wdtvlive as well

2.4ghz ssid is visible for the house, only i get to use 5ghz

        • do you also get 5bars with 5ghz when you are downstairs?

        • @frankfu1122:

          just did a live test.

took macbookpro13R to the end of the house (about 30m from the wireless router). still 5 bars (max displayed on macbook)

          connected to 5Ghz

        • @imakuza

          thanks for that!

        • @iamkuza:
Could you post Tx speed and MCS index from your Mac when upstairs? Option key+wireless icon click

        • @oj4rec:

          Security WPA2
          Channel: 36 (5 GHz, 80Mhz)
          RSSI: -50dBm
          Noise: -95dBm
          Tx Rate: 434 Mbps
          PHY Mode: 802.11ac

dont' see MCS index listed sorry

        • @canon1989: No real need to repeat the same comment thrice in this thread, is there, even if you're dearly like others to see it and hopefully offer feedback before the deal expires?

        • @ASmugDill: sorry about that, as this is considered an old deal, I need all the attention I could get before the deal expires. And if you are only here to comment about that, I do realise about that, no need for you to point it out. Instead of saying that, you could probably help me with the answer? No?

        • @canon1989: Actually, I got on here to up-vote the deal and those who suggested getting Officeworks to match and beat that price, as well as let others know there is still some chance of success doing so today.

As for your wireless LAN situation, how the hell should I know how your house or apartment is set up, whether the walls are brick-veneer, double brick or concrete, whether there are sources of interference, etc. – all of which can impact Wi-Fi performance? If you want to spend money, this router is being offered at a bargain right now and I'm happy to chat about that. If you just want the best Internet user experience you can have, and want someone to give you some technical analysis, I don't think OzBargain is the best forum for that.

  • @iamkuza
cool. thanks for the real-world usage info.

  • +3

Had this and configured dd-wrt on it. Installed it at a friend's place in a 12th floor apartment. I got to my car on the lobby and I was still connected to the LAN. It's that strong. He might get cancer from it now. Ah well.

    • +7

That's a bloody long ethernet cable, either that or you meant WLAN.

      • +1

I meant WLAN, but LAN stands for Local Area Network, that includes both wired and wireless devices all connected to the same network.

        • what is the stable dd-wrt version? I'm using Kong's firmware and can't get stable connection on wlan1 on AC.

        • @timhn: I used Kong's and is fine.

  • -1

NightHawk? Really? Is this a router or the latest Colin Farrell movie.

  • +13
    • +1

A bit inconsistent. SE has it for $165 free shipping on their eBay store yet on their main web site it's $159 free shipping. Shows it pays to shop around.

      • +1

        Its call FeeeBay

      • +1

Obviously their ebay store has to be priced slightly higher to offset the seller fees.

        • Yeah. I forgot about eBay and its high fees.

  • Is it worth getting?! I've been looking at this for a while now. I just have generic TPG NBN moderm

  • These are fairly average out of the box but if you flash DD-WRT they are an amazing router for the price!!

  • It is fast but very noisy. I've been using one for just under a year now.

Be careful with this shop though. I bought something from them yesterday and they cancelled the order and told me the price was wrong and refunded my money.

    • What causes the noise? Does the router have a fan?

      • Not sure. I always thought it was the processor, but i don't know if they can make noise.

    • I have never heard of routers/modems making physical noise. I don't see why they would, there are no moving parts?

Can you elaborate? Is it like a HDD seeking noise? A computer fan noise? Beeping?

      • It's like a brushing or sweeping sound - old style broom hitting against concrete every half second or second. It increases in volume and slight increase in frequency when i am downloading or streaming stuff. It is much quieter when little is happening on the network.

    • +1

The R7000 I bought today makes less noise than an iPhone. Perhaps you got a special version with a fan?

      • How much noise does an iPhone make?

        • +1

          None. I meant it's silent ;)

  • +4

OW Milton price matched it with SE, I just bought it for $151.05

    • Pricematched at Subiaco for $151 too. They tried to convince me that SE has a different model (R7000-100AUS) :D

      • Got the last one & pricematched from OW Hobart but it wasn't a very good experience as it took a very long time for the staff to go thru SE's terms and conditions. Then when he finally returns he said SE doesn't offer Australian Warranty(which SE does), quoting this:

"For all products sold by ShoppingExpress.com.au (in our Ebay account or the ShoppingExpress.com.au website) that stated ShoppingExpress.com.au as the warrantor, fulfilments for the warranty will be either of the following"

I pointed out to him as the product page says clearly "1 year manufacturer's warranty" but he still "failed" to understand and insists that sentence stated SE is the warrantor for all products they sold.

In the end he finally "understand" after I repeatedly pointed out to him word by word. So he said they are selling it at $296 so he can't do it or he will have to get the manager. Another male staff said OW doesn't pricematch on sale items. They did everything they could to put me off and in the end they got their manager who knew nothing could be done and just asked the staff to make sure it's the same model R7000-100AUS.

If I don't need it urgently or for the advantage of returning it if it is faulty I would definitely buy from SE, better experience.

        • The manager at Milton store was really good about it, I was in and out in about 5 mins

    • Thanks. Price matched at Brisbane CBD OW. No issues.
Been looking at this router for ages.
The original group buy is a great price from normal, but this is even better!
      Thanks Oz Bargain users.

  • There's now 5 deals going on eBay for the Nighthawk R7000 router for $165 delivered. Wireless1 beaten in price a bit.

  • How does this compare to the r8000?

  • Netgear is the best brand, very reliable compared to D-link and Tplink

  • I just want to buy one for the name- good marketing. Looks like my old Asus G73

  • I went with the asus one ac-68u. This one doesn't come with a torrent client…for those interested.

    • Torrent client, (Transmission), is available for the R7000 if you use an open source firmware so it shouldn't be a show stopper.

Infact the availability of open source firmwares like DD-WRT is one of the attractive features of the R7000.

  • If I am using a BoB Lite modem router at the moment, would buying this help my low signal and transfer speed problems in my network? (not talking internet speed)

Can I run this in conjunction with the Bob Lite or is it best I purchase a Modem Router instead? (TP Link D9)

  • This router is fantastic, recommend. Handles bandwidth like a champ.

  • How does this compare to a fritzbox? (7270, purchased about 5 years ago now) I don't use the extra functions and never have on the fritzbox, just want a fast and reliable wirleless connection and so also stream local media from my mbp via plex to my LG tv.. I'm a noob!

  • I set one of these up recently with Tomato firmware, for better openVPN configuration. Great router and feature set for the money. It was a bargain before. Amazing for $159

  • +2

I bought it from the ebay store. I know it is not the ozbargain way but I would rather award the guy that got the router's price down instead of the ones that price match it.

    • Thanks heaps for the support mate!

      • since you are here, tell me if I can pick it up from your store in Parramatta :) I live 2 minutes away. That of course if you are that shop.

        • Never mind: my question is now obsolete as the router was already sent by mail.

  • Have it from a previous deal (paid a bit more!). So far very happy. For the advanced user the firmware sucks. For the beginner I guess it can work well. I used a WRT variant and super stable. Good range (Top end ASUS will have slightly better range)

Had a TP Link 750 before. This runs rings around it in terms of stability and Gigabit LAN throughput to my Synology NAS.

  • Good, good router!

  • Yep great router, stable and fast

  • -4
    • +5

It is in the title "SE" means Shopping Express. Please read carefully before neg a post

      • The deal body also states:

        Updated:
Shopping express now also sell it for $159
        Sale Ends 00:00 am, 18 March 2015
Estimated Dispatch time: 1-2 working days
        Maximum Order Quantity: 1

The only thing missing is a link to the item on SE's site.

        • Rakddon mentioned it in above comment and also provided a link. I will update it anyway

  • Wasn't it meant to have antennae on both sides and look like an insect?

    • That's the R8000

  • +1

Price beat at OW North Ryde. I called first to confirm the price beat with SE, then just went to collect from the checkout $151.05. Thanks OP!

On a separate note, Wireless1 appears to have good prices (from other items I was interested in the past) and the sales staff on phone is reasonably helpful. Will try to buy from them next time but just a hassle to goto their shop - local postal delivery just kills local businesses.

  • +1

Bought from OW this afternoon after price beat as final payment $143.10. Could not be happier than that. Shelf original price is $269.00.

Thank you OP and guys who mentioned OW.

    • That means OW beat you 10% off of $159? That's really a bargain

    • Which OW did you go? I am getting one tommorow !

      • Glen Waverley OW in Mel. Cheers. :)

        • Hi Long,

You are true Ozbargain. I do not know what the hell you did, as far as I know OW only beat by 5% off, did they made mistake by giving you 10% off? I paid $151.05 today from OW

  • I must be the only person here who couldn't get an OW price match - my local store at Alexandria (Sydney). They said someone had tried to price match earlier - and the warranty card in the box said 2 year warranty but the shoppingexpress site said 1 year warranty - so not the same product / deal - so no price match. I tried arguing that it was the same product etc, but no joy. Curious if anyone can verify what the warranty card says. Wondering if it is 2 years in Australia and shoppingexpress just has the wrong info on their site ? Will try an OW near work tomorrow and see if I have any better luck.

    • Hi Belbo, i price matched at OW today no problems at all. Took 1min for him to yes.
Inside the box the warranty card says 2 years.

      • I got a $151.50 price match at OW Hunter St Sydney CBD today. Was the last one on the shelf. No dramas at all. The manager just looked at the screenshot of the SE shopping cart on my phone and said ok - perhaps he had done one already. Anyway - pleased to have it. Am going to use it as a wifi access point only - not as a router - will continue using my TPLink WR1043ND with gargoyle as a router (but not as a wifi ap). I like gargoyle and my modem and router are in the garage - and would like my wifi ap in the study - which is more in the middle of the house.

    • They must receive special training to find reasons not to price match.. I had to argue a bit as well: about the model number (they thought it's different) and shipping (they didn't see or didn't want to see that it's $159 delivered from SE). shungyiu above had some trouble price matching too.

Some stores seem to match easier than others. Maybe that happens when you're not the first person matching the item?

    • +1

I rang Officeworks on its 1300 number, and the customer service rep agreed to price beat without offering any resistance, so I placed the order right then with free delivery.

  • Hi guys, I have ADSL2+ with average speed around 12Mbps, but when I'm in my room, the speed goes down to 3-4Mbps(3 meters away from the wireless modem, but separated by a wooden door).
