I seem to recall buying the same kit 3-4 years ago for around $50. Has memory gotten a lot more expensive recently?

    • Yes, they were ~$50 back when the dollar was getting US$1.10, also with the explosion of mobile devices like tablets the demand for RAM has slowed a fair bit.

    • Back in 2012, demand for DDR3 was low, and you could buy memory DIMMs for very cheap.

Then, in 2013, a fire forced the closing of SK Hynix’s factory in Wuxi. That particular factory produced 10% of worldwide's memory chips.
Company such as Apple, HP, Lenovo still needed as much memory modules for their products, which ramped up the demand:offer ratio.
Prices skyrocketed back then. As of today, price are still high but keep decreasing since production of memory chips is back to full speed.

  • Might be the dollar.

  • Vengeance, Ballistix, patriot, viper, fury , sniper … what's with all the silly bogan names?

It all sounds like names for muscle cars, or cheap-but-loud speakers.
